Chapter 1 - The Bracelet She Never Received

The morning I went to my husband’s company so we could attend his grandfather’s memorial together, I watched his childhood sweetheart step out of his luxury car wearing his jacket. I didn’t scream, cry, or confront her in the parking lot. Instead, I walked inside and gave every employee a Dior bracelet—except her—and by the time my husband demanded an apology, I had already decided he was going to answer for much more than a bracelet.
My name is Claire Bennett Moretti, and I was married to Alexander Moretti, one of Chicago’s most powerful men.
Alexander was wealthy, intimidating, and used to being obeyed. But I had money, influence, and a powerful family of my own, so I had never married him for status.
I married him because I loved him.
For years, there had been one problem between us.
Sophia Reynolds.
His childhood sweetheart.
Alexander always insisted their relationship was innocent, even though Sophia somehow received the kind of attention that should have belonged to his wife.
Then came the Hermès watch.
I had fallen in love with it, and Alexander promised he would buy it for me. I could easily have bought it myself, but that wasn’t the point.
It was a promise from my husband.
Then I discovered the watch on Sophia’s wrist.
When I confronted him, Alexander shrugged.
“Claire, it’s just a watch.”
To him, maybe.
To me, it was a promise he had taken from his wife and handed to another woman.
A month later, on the anniversary of his grandfather’s death, I went to his company so we could attend the family memorial together.
That was when Alexander’s car pulled up.
Sophia stepped out first.
She was wearing his jacket.
Alexander followed.
When he saw me, surprise flashed across his face.
“Claire.”
“I came so we could leave together.”
He immediately glanced at Sophia.
“Her car wasn’t available. I gave her a ride. It was cold, so I let her borrow my jacket.”
Sophia clutched it around herself.
“Claire, please don’t misunderstand. I can take it off if it bothers you.”
I almost laughed.
Instead, I looked at Alexander.
“You said giving her a ride was convenient?”
“Yes.”
“Her destination is in the opposite direction.”
His expression darkened.
“Claire, don’t start. Today is my grandfather’s memorial.”
Then he added quietly, “At least think about my reputation.”
I smiled.
“Your reputation is something you threw away yourself. Don’t ask me to pick it up for you.”
Then I walked inside.
I had already arranged gifts for the employees.
Dior bracelets.
One for everyone.
Soon, employees were smiling, thanking me, opening elegant boxes.
Everyone received one.
Except Sophia.
Her smile slowly disappeared.
“Claire?” she asked. “Did you forget mine?”
“No.”
The room went silent.
“You didn’t?”
“I didn’t prepare one for you.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“But everyone else got one.”
“That’s right.”
She looked humiliated. “Do you dislike me that much?”
I calmly met her eyes.
“Sophia, didn’t you already receive the Hermès watch my husband promised to buy for me?”
The entire room froze.
Her face turned pale.
I continued.
“The watch Alexander knew I loved. The one he promised would be mine.”
Then I looked at my husband.
“He bought it.”
My gaze returned to Sophia.
“And gave it to you.”
Alexander stepped forward.
“Claire, that’s enough.”
“What’s enough?”
“You’re embarrassing her.”
I laughed softly.
“Over a watch?”
“That’s exactly what this is. A watch.”
I looked straight at him.
“To you, it was a watch. To me, it was a promise.”
Sophia quickly said, “Claire, I never asked him to break a promise.”
“Then keep it,” I replied. “I don’t want it anymore.”
I turned toward Alexander.
“And I don’t want promises you make that easily either.”
His expression hardened.
“Apologize to Sophia.”
I stared at him.
“You gave another woman the gift you promised your wife, and now you want your wife to apologize to her?”
He said nothing.
My assistant approached.
“Mrs. Moretti, the car is ready for the memorial.”
I nodded and started walking away.
Behind me, Alexander called my name.
I stopped at the door and looked back.
“I’ll see you at the memorial.”
Then I smiled.
“And I’m very interested to hear how you explain to both our families why your childhood sweetheart is wearing your jacket—and the Hermès watch you promised your wife.”

For once, Alexander had no answer.
