Chapter 5 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING CHANGEDCaleb didn't leave.

He stayed in the foyer staring at the wedding ring.
I expected anger.
Instead, he looked wounded.
It would have worked once.
Not anymore.
“Can we talk?” he asked.
“No.”
“Please.”
“No.”
“Just five minutes.”
I looked at Marcus.
He nodded.
I sat.
Caleb remained standing.
“I made mistakes,” he said.
“That isn't what this is.”
“I was trying to protect our future.”
“You forged my signature.”
“I didn't.”
I stared at him.
He didn't blink.
That was when I realized how practiced he had become.
He believed lies because he had repeated them long enough.
“You didn't forge it?”
“No.”
“Then who did?”
“I don't know.”
“Your lawyer?”
“I don't know.”
“Your mother?”
His jaw tightened.
“Don't drag my mother into this.”
I almost smiled.
“Your mother is already in this.”
Silence.
Then Caleb said:
“You're making a mistake by listening to Marcus.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because your grandmother's lawyer has always hated me.”
Marcus laughed quietly.
Caleb turned.
“You think this is funny?”
“No.”
Marcus stood.
“I think you're forgetting something.”
“What?”
“I drafted the postnuptial agreement.”
Caleb's expression changed.
“You know exactly what you signed.”
Caleb looked back at me.
“You really want to destroy our marriage over paperwork?”
“No.”
I touched my stomach.
“You destroyed it when you decided my daughter was leverage.”
He went pale.
“I never said that.”
“You didn't have to.”
I stood.
“Leave.”
He didn't move.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
Victor.
I watched his face.
“Answer it.”
Caleb hesitated.
“Answer it.”
He stepped outside.
Marcus quietly followed.
I couldn't hear the conversation.
But ten minutes later, Marcus returned alone.
“Where is Caleb?”
“Gone.”
“What happened?”
“He told Victor the property wasn't available.”
My heart pounded.
“What did Victor say?”
Marcus looked at me.
“He threatened him.”
Before I could respond, every light in the house went out.
The security system died.
The room became completely dark.
Then I heard glass breaking downstairs.
My heart stopped.
Marcus grabbed my arm.
“Stay behind me.”
Another crash.
Then footsteps.
Three men entered through the rear door.
Marcus shouted for security.
A struggle erupted.
I backed toward the stairs.
One man spotted me.
He started toward me.
I froze.
Then someone grabbed him from behind.
Caleb.
He slammed the man against the wall.
“Get away from my wife!”
For a few seconds, everything stopped.
Security rushed inside.
The intruders fled.
Sirens sounded outside.
Caleb stood breathing heavily.
Blood ran from his forehead.
I stared at him.
“You came back.”
He looked at me.
“They followed me.”
“Who?”
“Victor's men.”
I felt the ground shift beneath me.
“Why would Victor attack us?”
Caleb swallowed.
“Because I told him no.”
“What changed?”
He looked away.
“Everything.”
I stepped closer.
“Caleb.”
He finally met my eyes.
“I didn't know how far he'd go.”
“You've known him for a year.”
“I thought I could control him.”
“You couldn't.”
“No.”
His voice broke.
“I couldn't.”
For the first time, I saw genuine fear.
Not for himself.
For me.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I thought I could fix it.”
“You almost destroyed us.”
“I know.”
“You used my company.”
“I know.”
“You lied about the house.”
“I know.”
“Then tell me the truth.”
He closed his eyes.
“My father knew about the land.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“Victor approached me because he knew I was married to you.”
I stared.
“He targeted me through you.”
Caleb nodded.
“He offered me money.”
“How much?”
“Five million.”
I felt sick.
“And you agreed?”
“At first.”
Silence.
“Then what happened?”
Caleb looked at the floor.
“I realized Victor wasn't planning a development.”
“What was he planning?”
He whispered:
“He wanted to force you out.”
“Why?”
“Because your grandmother owned something that could block his entire project.”
“The development rights.”
“Yes.”
I felt dizzy.
“Why didn't you walk away?”
“I tried.”
“You tried?”
“I told him I wouldn't help.”
“And?”
“He threatened Brooke.”
I froze.
“What?”
“He had evidence of money she took.”
I stared at him.
“So you sacrificed me to protect your sister?”
“I thought I could solve both.”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“You sacrificed me because you thought I was the easiest person to sacrifice.”
He didn't deny it.
That hurt more than any argument.
Then the front door opened.
Police entered.
Behind them was Marcus.
And behind Marcus was a woman I recognized.
Natalie.
She was crying.
“Mrs. Reed,” she said.
“What happened?”
She looked at Caleb.
“He knows.”
“Knows what?”
Natalie handed me a file.
“Victor ordered the surveillance.”
I opened it.
Inside were photographs of me.
At the clinic.
At the grocery store.
At the hospital.
Everywhere.
Then I saw the final photograph.
My unborn daughter.
A sonogram.
Taken from a medical file.
I couldn't breathe.
Someone had accessed my private medical information.
Marcus took the file.
His expression changed.
“This is no longer a property dispute.”
I looked at Caleb.
“What did you do?”
He shook his head.
“I didn't know.”
But now I knew.
Victor wasn't trying to steal my house.
He was trying to control my entire life.
And the baby had become part of the threat.
That night, I made a decision.
I wasn't going to run.
I wasn't going to hide.
I was going to make Victor believe his plan was working.
