Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

Vincent survived the shooting.
The bullet had passed through his shoulder without striking a major artery, but doctors insisted that he remain under observation.
Jenna refused to leave the hospital.
Lily slept in a chair beside her mother, exhausted from the previous night's terror.
When Vincent finally woke, the first thing he asked was whether the little girl was safe.
“She's asleep,” Jenna said.
“Good.”
He attempted to sit up.
Jenna immediately stopped him.
“You are not getting out of that bed.”
“I have things to handle.”
“You have a bullet wound.”
“I've had worse.”
“That doesn't make this one disappear.”
He looked at her.
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Vincent said quietly, “I'm sorry.”
Jenna sat beside him.
“Stop apologizing for things other people did.”
“Your daughter was taken because of my family.”
“She was taken because someone chose to hurt a child.”
Vincent lowered his eyes.
“That's worse.”
During the next two days, the investigation uncovered a much larger operation.
Dominic had been moving money through several shell companies for years.
The stolen funds had been used to purchase properties, finance private security contracts and pay people willing to keep quiet about the Marino family's activities.
Vanessa had been receiving a substantial monthly payment.
She had also helped Dominic obtain confidential medical information about Vincent.
The most disturbing discovery came from an encrypted archive recovered from Dr. Reed's clinic.
It contained recordings of private conversations.
One recording featured Dominic.
“Once the implant starts malfunctioning, Vincent will become unpredictable. The board will consider him medically unfit. I'll take over the legitimate companies.”
Another voice asked, “And the woman?”
Dominic laughed.
“Vanessa? She thinks she's getting a wedding ring. She's getting a bill.”
Vincent listened without moving.
Jenna watched his face.
“Are you okay?”
“No.”
He paused.
“But now I know.”
The recording continued.
Dominic discussed the shooting ten years earlier.
He admitted that he had arranged the attack to eliminate his mother and take control of the family business.
He had not expected Vincent to survive.
But he had used the injury as an opportunity.
The final recording contained something even more shocking.
A conversation between Dominic and their father.
Their father had known about the financial theft.
He had also known Elena was alive.
He had agreed to keep her hidden in exchange for Dominic maintaining control of the family's operations.
Vincent stopped the recording.
“My father knew.”
Jenna remained silent.
“He let me believe she was dead.”
He looked away.
“All these years, I thought I was protecting his legacy.”
“Maybe you were protecting a lie.”
Vincent looked at her.
Jenna continued.
“Your family taught you that power means never showing weakness. Maybe that's why nobody ever told you the truth.”
He considered her words.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain of what to say.
Meanwhile, Vanessa was arrested at a private airport while attempting to leave the country.
She initially refused to cooperate.
But when investigators showed her the financial records and recordings, her confidence collapsed.
She admitted that Dominic had promised her marriage, wealth and control over the legitimate businesses.
She had believed Vincent would be declared incompetent.
She had also helped arrange the device hidden inside his jacket.
However, she insisted that Dominic had planned something much worse.
A final operation was scheduled for Friday night.
The Marino family was holding an emergency meeting at the Grand Aldridge.
Dominic intended to announce that Vincent was medically incapable of managing the business.
He would then present documents transferring control of the legitimate companies to himself.
Vanessa was supposed to stand beside him.
Instead, she was in custody.
Vincent looked at Marcus.
“Move the meeting forward.”
“Sir, you're not medically cleared.”
“I don't need to be.”
Jenna stood.
“You're going to confront him?”
“Yes.”
“Then make sure you have evidence.”
Vincent nodded.
“I have enough.”
“No. You have enough to accuse him. You need enough to destroy the lie.”
She placed a small flash drive on the table.
“What is that?” Vincent asked.
“The original recording from the hotel's maintenance archive.”
Jenna explained that Lily had remembered hearing a conversation through the open service-room door.
Before Vanessa took her, the little girl had overheard Dominic mentioning a recording hidden inside the Grand Aldridge's old security system.
Marcus had recovered it that afternoon.
The file contained a conversation recorded three weeks before Vincent's latest medical episode.
Dominic was speaking to a man whose voice sounded strangely familiar.
Vincent pressed play.
A voice emerged.
“Your brother must never discover what happened to Elena.”
Vincent froze.
It was his father's voice.
But his father had died eight years earlier.
Marcus looked confused.
“That's impossible.”
Vincent listened again.
Then he noticed the date.
The recording had been created six months before his father's supposed death.
The voice continued.
“If Dominic fails, destroy the evidence. And make sure Vincent never learns who actually pulled the trigger.”
Vincent slowly looked at Marcus.
“Who was the shooter?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Sir, the original police file identifies the suspect as an unknown male.”
“Find the file.”
Marcus opened the recovered archive.
A scanned confession appeared.
The shooter had been identified.
The name was not Dominic.
It was someone Vincent had trusted more than anyone else.
Marcus Bell.
Vincent looked up.
Marcus was already reaching for his weapon.
“I'm sorry, boss.”
The hospital room went silent.
Then Marcus smiled.
May you like
“But your father never intended for either of us to survive the truth.”
