Chapter 1

The man I loved looked across his family’s dinner table and calmly told me, “You don’t belong here,” after his father threatened to take away the company, the board seat, and the future Daniel had spent years chasing. Two years later, he would look through a café window at two little girls with his blue eyes and realize the life he had never known existed. But that night, when I walked out of the Ashford townhouse alone, even I had no idea I was already carrying the secret that would one day bring us face-to-face again.

My name is Claire, and the day Daniel underestimated me was the day he destroyed himself.

The room had gone completely silent.

Daniel sat across from me.

His father, Charles, had just made the choice painfully clear.

“If you walk out of this room with her, do not expect to return Monday morning as if nothing happened.”

Daniel froze.

Charles reminded him of everything he wanted.

The company.

A seat on the board.

The privileges that came with being an Ashford.

His mother, Eleanor, sat perfectly composed while explaining that Daniel’s life was not simply his own.

Then her eyes moved toward Victoria Hale.

Elegant.

Blond.

The daughter of one of Charles’s oldest business partners.

A woman Daniel had known since childhood.

“We are not asking you to marry someone you hate,” Eleanor said.

I waited for Daniel to defend me.

Only minutes earlier, he had stood so abruptly that his chair moved backward and snapped, “Enough.”

For one brief moment, I thought love had won.

Then Daniel looked at me.

He looked at his father.

He looked toward the portraits covering the walls.

And something in his face changed.

“She’s right about one thing.”

My heart stopped.

Daniel finally met my eyes.

“You don’t belong here.”

I stared at him.

“Daniel.”

His fingers tightened around his wineglass.

“Did you really mean that?”

I saw something behind his eyes.

Regret.

Fear.

Pain.

But he did not reach for me.

He looked at his parents instead.

“It’s what has to be said.”

That sentence broke something in me.

His parents were pressuring him.

His father was threatening him.

His mother was manipulating him.

But Daniel was still the one speaking.

Nobody was forcing those words from his mouth.

He was choosing his family.

So I stood.

My legs were shaking, but I refused to collapse in front of them.

Victoria looked away.

Charles showed nothing.

Eleanor looked satisfied.

Daniel stared at the table.

I placed my napkin beside my untouched plate.

“I hope your family name keeps you warm.”

Then I walked out.

I kept expecting Daniel to follow me.

At the front door.

On the stone steps.

Across the sidewalk.

At the corner.

Nothing.

I looked back once.

The door stayed closed.

That was the moment I stopped waiting for Daniel Ashford to choose me.

I returned to his Manhattan apartment only because some of my belongings were still there.

By four in the morning, I had packed one suitcase and one backpack.

I left his key beside the coffee machine.

Then I checked my phone.

No missed call.

No message.

Nothing.

At 4:18 a.m., I typed three words.

I love you.

Then I deleted them.

By sunrise, I was gone.

Weeks later, I was living in a tiny studio in Seattle and working at a bookstore, trying to build a life far enough away from Daniel that I could finally breathe.

Then one morning, everything changed.

I stood barefoot in my bathroom staring at a pregnancy test.

Two pink lines appeared.

I couldn’t move.

Daniel’s face filled my mind.

His laugh.

His eyes.

That dinner.

That closed door.

My phone was sitting on the sink.

I picked it up.

My thumb hovered over his name.

And for one terrifying moment, I had to decide whether the man who had chosen his family over me deserved to know what I had just discovered.

May you like
