Chapter 8 - THE MOTHER AT THE CENTER OF THE BOARD

Evelyn did not run.

She invited them to dinner.

Dominic almost admired the audacity.

The dining room in her Beacon Hill townhouse looked exactly as it had during his childhood.

Same silver candlesticks.

Same enormous table.

Same portrait of Victor Crane above the fireplace.

Evelyn sat beneath it.

Marcus was there under federal supervision after agreeing to cooperate.

Elena came with Dominic.

Nobody touched the food.

Dominic placed the stock documents on the table.

“Explain.”

Evelyn looked at both sons.

“You spent your entire lives fighting over something neither of you should have inherited.”

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“So you stole it?”

“I reclaimed it.”

Evelyn revealed the final piece.

Victor had abused her for years.

After she escaped, he used money and influence to keep Marcus away from her.

Years later, when Victor married Dominic's mother, Evelyn watched another child grow inside the same poisoned system.

Dominic's mother eventually discovered what Victor was.

The two women became secret allies.

Before Dominic's mother died, they created financial safeguards designed to dismantle Victor's empire if he ever returned.

Evelyn had spent eleven years waiting.

“Why didn't you tell us?” Dominic demanded.

“Because you were becoming him.”

That silenced the room.

She looked at Dominic.

“You called intimidation leadership.”

Then Marcus.

“You called revenge justice.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“And both of you called it family because admitting what it really was hurt too much.”

Marcus looked away.

Dominic did not.

“Did you help Victor kidnap Noah?”

“No.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Then why buy the company now?”

“To destroy what Victor came back for.”

Evelyn had acquired controlling shares not to keep Crane Holdings but to break it apart.

Legitimate companies would become employee-owned or independently managed.

Illegal divisions would be surrendered to investigators.

A large portion of the family fortune would fund restitution.

Marcus stared at her.

“You're burning the empire.”

“Yes.”

“Our entire inheritance.”

“No.”

Evelyn looked between her sons.

“I'm burning your father's inheritance.”

Then she looked at Elena.

“What remains afterward is up to you.”

Dominic laughed quietly.

For years he would have fought anyone who suggested dismantling Crane Holdings.

Now he felt something unexpected.

Relief.

The empire had been a prison with better furniture.

His father had simply forgotten the chains because they were made of money.

Dominic signed.

Marcus hesitated longer.

Then signed too.

Victor's financial network began collapsing within hours.

Accounts froze.

Partners defected.

Former allies cooperated with prosecutors.

The invisible king suddenly had nowhere to hide.

He responded violently.

That evening, an explosion tore through one of the Crane warehouses.

No one died.

The message was clear.

The next target arrived as a photograph on Dominic's phone.

Elena leaving nursing school.

Dominic went pale.

Elena looked at it.

“No.”

He turned.

“What?”

“We are not doing this again.”

“Elena—”

“I am not hiding while men decide what happens to me.”

She contacted the federal case agent herself.

Then she proposed something nobody liked.

Use her as bait.

Dominic refused immediately.

Marcus laughed.

Elena ignored both.

Victor believed she was Dominic's weakness.

They would let him believe it.

A controlled message leaked that Elena had returned to her apartment.

Surveillance teams surrounded the block.

Dominic waited inside with her.

“You should not be here,” she said.

“Neither should you.”

“It's my apartment.”

“Excellent argument.”

Hours passed.

Nothing.

At midnight, Elena made coffee.

At one, Dominic fell asleep on the couch.

At 1:17, the power died.

Elena froze.

Dominic woke instantly.

A window shattered.

Someone entered through the kitchen.

Dominic moved toward Elena.

Then a familiar voice came from the darkness.

“Don't.”

Victor stepped into the room.

He held a gun.

“You always choose damaged women, Dominic.”

Dominic's face went cold.

“Leave her out of this.”

Victor smiled.

“Still giving orders.”

Elena stared at the man who had created decades of suffering.

He looked ordinary.

That surprised her most.

Monsters were supposed to look like monsters.

Victor looked like somebody's grandfather.

Sirens remained silent.

The federal team had not moved.

Why?

Then Elena noticed Dominic's expression.

He understood too.

Victor had someone inside the operation.

Again.

Victor motioned toward the door.

“You're coming with me.”

Dominic moved.

Victor pointed the weapon at Elena.

“No heroics.”

Dominic stopped.

Then another voice sounded behind Victor.

“Listen to him.”

Marcus stood in the hallway.

Victor smiled.

“My disappointing son.”

Marcus held a gun.

Dominic's heart sank.

For one terrible second, nobody knew which side Marcus had chosen.

May you like

Then Marcus pointed the weapon directly at Dominic.

“Sorry, brother.”
