Chapter 1 - THE SECRET BENEATH HER UNIFORM

The imported Calacatta marble beneath Lily’s hands was cold, but not as cold as the heavy click of the deadbolt echoing through the silent Moretti mansion.

Lorenzo Moretti was not merely a billionaire. He was the head of the city’s most ruthless criminal syndicate, and he had just found one of his maids crying alone in his kitchen.

Rain struck the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Oyster Bay estate, blurring the distant lights of Manhattan. Inside, the mansion’s size felt suffocating.

Lily scrubbed the marble kitchen island until her knuckles turned white.

It was past midnight. The rest of the household staff had retired to their rooms in the east wing, but sleep was no longer possible for her.

A violent wave of nausea tightened her stomach, reminding her of the impossible reality growing inside her.

She was 2 months pregnant.

Tears spilled over her lashes and struck the immaculate stone. Lily pressed the heel of one hand against her mouth to smother the sob that followed.

She was supposed to be invisible.

At 22, she had accepted the position cleaning the Moretti estate to repay the medical debt left after her mother’s treatment and death at Mount Sinai Hospital. She moved quietly, spoke only when necessary, and attempted to pass through the mansion like a ghost.

Invisibility had not protected her from the predators inside Lorenzo Moretti’s organization.

“You missed a spot.”

The voice was a low baritone that seemed to move through the floor.

Lily gasped and turned so quickly that she nearly lost her footing.

Lorenzo stood inside the kitchen archway.

He still wore the charcoal Brioni suit he had worn to a meeting at Cipriani Wall Street earlier that evening. His tie was gone, and the upper 3 buttons of his white shirt were open.

He looked exhausted but dangerous, like a resting predator forced awake.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Lily hurriedly removed the tears from her face.

“I am sorry. I thought everyone was asleep. I will leave immediately.”

She seized the plastic cleaning caddy.

Her hands shook hard enough to send a spray bottle onto the floor.

Lily crouched to retrieve it, but dizziness passed through her. She swayed and caught the edge of the island.

Lorenzo did not move to assist her.

His dark eyes cataloged every detail: the shaking hands, colorless skin, swollen eyes, and fear radiating from her small body.

During the 2 years Lily had worked inside the mansion, she had rarely spoken directly to him.

Lorenzo was treated less like a man than a myth. He commanded people with a glance and controlled the Eastern Seaboard’s shipping ports through violence, money, and fear.

He stepped fully into the kitchen.

Lily’s breathing caught.

Lorenzo reached behind him and took hold of the heavy brass handle on the oak doors.

He closed them deliberately.

The deadbolt engaged with a sharp click.

Lily backed away until her spine touched the stainless-steel ovens.

There was no other exit.

“Mr. Moretti, please.”

Her voice broke.

“I was not searching for anything. I was cleaning.”

Lorenzo approached.

His Oxford shoes made almost no sound.

Cigar smoke, expensive whiskey, and the ozone of the storm surrounded him.

He stopped inches away, trapping Lily between his body and the counter.

“I compensate my staff exceptionally well.”

His voice was controlled.

“I pay for discretion, efficiency, and peace inside my home.”

He looked down at her.

“So tell me why I find you hyperventilating over my countertops at 1:00 a.m.”

He knew her name.

He had never spoken it before, but he knew it.

“I am tired.”

Lily focused on the Patek Philippe watch at his wrist rather than his face.

“Only tired, sir.”

Lorenzo’s jaw tightened.

He raised one hand.

Lily flinched and prepared for an impact.

Instead, his fingers closed carefully around her chin and lifted her face toward him.

“You are shaking.”

His thumb moved beneath the dark circles around her eyes and then along the line of her jaw.

There, beneath inexpensive foundation, a fading yellow-and-purple bruise remained visible.

Lorenzo’s eyes darkened.

The quiet observation became focused and lethal.

“Who put his hands on you?”

“No one.”

Lily attempted to pull away, but his grip remained firm without becoming painful.

“I walked into a door. Please let me return to my room.”

“Do not insult my intelligence.”

Lorenzo leaned closer.

“I survive by studying liars.”

His voice lost every trace of softness.

“I know what a woman looks like when she fears the monster beneath her bed.”

He held her gaze.

“You are inside my home. There are no monsters here except me.”

His fingers tightened slightly.

“I will ask once more. Give me the name of the man who hurt you.”

Lily’s chest rose and fell rapidly.

If she told him, she believed she would die.

The man responsible had promised it while holding a blade against her ribs inside the laundry room 3 weeks earlier.

If she spoke to Lorenzo, he said, her body would be found floating in the East River.

“I cannot.”

Her composure broke.

“He will kill me. He said he would kill me.”

Lily covered her face and slid down the cabinets until she was crouched on the kitchen floor, crying uncontrollably.

Lorenzo looked at her.

He ordered executions without hesitation, but the sight of her terror created an unfamiliar and violent fury inside him.

He lowered himself onto 1 knee.

“Look at me.”

Lily peered at him through her fingers.

“No one dies in this city without my permission.”

Absolute authority filled his voice.

“Whoever he is, he remains alive because I allow it.”

Lorenzo’s expression became colder.

“Give me his name, and I will remove him from this world before sunrise.”

He waited.

“Give me the name, Lily.”

She saw no exaggeration or empty reassurance in his eyes.

Lorenzo was not making a threat.

He was describing what would happen.

“Vincent.”

The name tasted like ash.

“Vincent Costa.”

Silence settled over the kitchen.

Vincent Costa was Lorenzo’s underboss. He controlled illegal gambling operations throughout Queens and had served as Lorenzo’s right hand for 5 years.

Lorenzo did not shout or destroy anything.

His stillness was more frightening than either reaction.

Only the ticking of his watch marked time while he absorbed the betrayal.

Vincent had not merely violated Lorenzo’s trust.

He had violated the sanctuary of his home.

“Vincent.”

Lorenzo repeated the name quietly.

It sounded like a death sentence.

“He cornered me.”

Lily rushed to explain, afraid Lorenzo would believe she had encouraged him.

“It began 1 month ago. He would find me alone when he came here for meetings.”

Her words came quickly.

“He said I owed him a toll for being allowed to work in his territory.”

She struggled to continue.

“Three weeks ago, after the dinner party, he cornered me in the basement.”

Lorenzo’s eyes changed slightly.

It was the only outward evidence of the fury moving through him.

“Did he force you?”

May you like

Lily closed her eyes.
