Chapter 7 - The House Where Charlotte Disappeared

Henry Vale looked too ordinary to have haunted two families for twenty years.

That frightened Charlotte more than a monster would have.

He wore a cardigan.

Reading glasses.

Polished brown shoes.

A grandfather’s clothes.

“You killed my mother,” Charlotte said.

Henry tilted his head.

“No.”

“Her brakes were cut.”

“Yes.”

“By you.”

“By someone working for me.”

Dominic moved.

Samuel raised his gun.

“Don’t.”

Dominic stopped.

Vanessa poured herself a drink.

“Victor started the network,” Henry explained. “Your father understood that respectable men are willing to pay extraordinary amounts to keep respectable reputations.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

“You helped him.”

“I improved his system.”

“And my mother?”

“Evelyn became inconvenient.”

Dominic took another step.

Samuel aimed at his chest.

Henry continued.

“Victor never ordered Evelyn’s death.”

Augustus looked up.

“What?”

“Her cancer saved us the trouble.”

Dominic’s fists clenched.

“You terrorized a dying woman.”

“We attempted to recover documents.”

“And Catherine?”

Henry smiled faintly.

“Catherine was different. She was dangerous.”

Charlotte’s nails dug into her palms.

“She discovered the money trail. She also discovered Victor intended to confess.”

Vanessa’s glass stopped halfway to her mouth.

Dominic stared.

“My father?”

“Victor developed a conscience very late in life.”

Henry sounded disgusted by the concept.

“He planned to turn everything over to federal prosecutors.”

“So you killed him too,” Dominic said.

Henry did not answer.

He did not need to.

Dominic’s father had supposedly suffered a heart attack three weeks after Catherine’s death.

Charlotte looked at Vanessa.

“You knew.”

Vanessa stared into her drink.

“I knew eventually.”

“And you helped them?”

Her face hardened.

“My brother left the company to Dominic. Everything. After everything I did for him.”

Dominic almost laughed.

“This was inheritance?”

“It was survival.”

“No. It was greed.”

Vanessa slapped him.

Dominic did not react.

Charlotte did.

She flinched.

Dominic noticed.

Something changed in his expression.

He looked at his aunt and said very quietly, “That ends with us.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

“Using hands because words aren’t enough.”

Charlotte stared at him.

For the first time, she believed he understood what he had done.

Henry tapped his cane.

“Touching. Now the earrings.”

Charlotte removed one.

Then the second.

Samuel extended his hand.

She smiled.

“No.”

And threw one into the fireplace.

Everyone moved.

Samuel shouted.

Vanessa lunged.

Peter ran toward the flames.

Dominic hit Samuel’s wrist.

The gun discharged into the ceiling.

Augustus kicked the chair backward into Henry.

Charlotte grabbed the fireplace poker.

Peter reached into the flames.

He screamed.

The silver earring bounced out onto the rug.

Vanessa dove for it.

Charlotte got there first.

Samuel recovered his gun.

“Stop!”

Everyone froze.

Blood ran from Dominic’s eyebrow.

Samuel aimed at Charlotte.

“Give it to me.”

She slowly raised her hands.

Then smiled.

“You really are your father’s son.”

Samuel frowned.

“What?”

“You keep looking at the wrong thing.”

Sirens erupted outside.

Red and blue lights filled the windows.

Henry’s face changed.

“How?”

Charlotte touched the necklace beneath her shirt.

Emma’s phone was broadcasting everything.

She had started the livestream before entering the house.

Not publicly.

Directly to three federal offices, two attorneys, and a journalist Catherine Carver had trusted twenty years earlier.

Samuel grabbed Charlotte.

Dominic moved.

“Let her go.”

Samuel pressed the gun against her neck.

“Back up.”

Dominic stopped.

Police surrounded the house.

Henry sank into a chair.

For the first time, he looked old.

Peter ran toward the back door.

Vanessa followed.

Augustus shouted.

Samuel dragged Charlotte toward another exit.

Dominic tracked them.

“Samuel.”

“Stay back.”

“You won't make it outside.”

“I only need her.”

Charlotte’s eyes met Dominic’s.

He understood something in them.

She suddenly dropped.

Dominic charged.

The gun fired.

Charlotte heard Augustus scream.

Dominic slammed Samuel into the wall.

Officers flooded the room.

Samuel was restrained.

Charlotte looked down.

Blood.

Not hers.

Dominic stood strangely still.

A dark stain spread across his side.

“Dominic?”

He looked at her.

Then collapsed.

Charlotte caught his shoulders but could not hold his weight.

They hit the floor together.

“No.”

His eyes remained open.

“Charlotte.”

“Don’t talk.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Stop.”

“For the club.”

“I know.”

“For believing—”

“Dominic, shut up.”

He smiled weakly.

“You’re still terrifying.”

Her hands pressed against the wound.

“Stay awake.”

“I’m trying.”

Paramedics rushed in.

As they lifted him, his fingers caught hers.

Charlotte held on.

She did not know why.

Maybe because she remembered a dark-haired nine-year-old boy guarding a telescope.

Maybe because he had stepped between her and Samuel.

Maybe because people were more complicated than their worst moment.

That did not erase anything.

But perhaps redemption was not erasure.

Perhaps it was what someone chose after seeing clearly what they had become.

Dominic’s eyes closed.

“Dominic!”

The paramedics pushed her back.

The ambulance doors slammed.

Charlotte stood in the driveway, hands covered in his blood.

Augustus came beside her.

“He’ll make it.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

She looked at her father.

“I spent seven years trying not to become you.”

Augustus swallowed.

“I know.”

“And somehow I still ended up in your world.”

“No.”

He touched her shoulder, then stopped before making contact.

“You made them enter yours.”

Charlotte looked at the ambulance disappearing through the gates.

Her phone rang.

Emma.

Charlotte answered.

“Claire?”

“I’m here.”

“You need to see the news.”

“Why?”

“The recording leaked.”

Charlotte closed her eyes.

“How much?”

“All of it.”

Within minutes, her hidden identity, Dominic’s assault, Henry’s confession, the Haven files, and the Rainer-Carver scandal were spreading across the country.

Charlotte Carver had spent seven years disappearing.

By sunrise, everyone in America knew her name.
