Chapter 10 - THE CHILD WHO WOULD CHANGE THE EMPIRE

Nobody moved.

Luca stared at Thomas.

"Explain."

Thomas placed the photograph on a nearby table.

"Victoria gave birth to twins."

Victoria covered her mouth.

"Twins?"

Thomas nodded.

"A boy and a girl. Your father arranged for both children to be moved because Salvatore had discovered their existence."

I looked at my mother.

She was crying.

"Why did you only tell me about one baby?"

"Because I only knew about one," she whispered.

Thomas continued.

"The girl was given to the Bennetts. The boy disappeared."

Luca looked at Salvatore.

"Where is he?"

Salvatore smiled.

"Closer than you think."

Luca's men moved forward.

But Salvatore raised his hand.

"Before you make another mistake, perhaps you should know who has been protecting your missing brother."

He looked toward Marco.

My stomach dropped.

Marco stood completely still.

Luca turned.

"Marco?"

The security chief lowered his eyes.

Then he reached inside his jacket.

Instead of a weapon, he removed a small photograph.

It showed a newborn baby.

On the back was a name.

Nicolas Varenna.

Luca stared.

"Who is he?"

Marco's voice cracked.

"My son."

The warehouse went silent.

"Twelve years ago, your father gave me a baby to protect. He told me the child was the only surviving evidence of Salvatore's betrayal."

Luca stepped closer.

"You've been hiding my brother?"

Marco nodded.

"I raised him as my own. I couldn't risk Salvatore finding out."

Victoria began sobbing.

"Where is he?"

"Safe," Marco answered. "Outside Boston."

Salvatore laughed.

"Not anymore."

He reached for his phone.

But before he could use it, Luca's men disarmed him.

For the first time, Salvatore's confidence disappeared.

Luca approached his uncle.

"You tried to kill me. You stole my brother. You destroyed my father's life. You made me believe I could never have a family."

Salvatore lifted his chin.

"I did what was necessary."

"For what?"

"For the empire!"

Luca looked at him with disgust.

"You destroyed the family to protect the business."

He turned to his men.

"Take him."

Salvatore was dragged away.

But Luca didn't celebrate.

He walked toward Victoria.

She stood trembling, unable to take her eyes off him.

"Is it true?" she whispered. "The twins?"

Luca nodded.

"Yes."

Victoria collapsed into a chair.

For twelve years, she had believed her children were dead.

Now she had discovered that one had grown up as Evelyn, and the other had been raised by the man who stood beside Luca.

I approached her slowly.

She looked at me.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"No. You don't owe me an apology."

Her hands reached for mine.

"I missed your first steps. Your first words. Your birthdays. I thought I would never see you again."

I began crying.

"I don't know how to call you Mom."

She smiled through her tears.

"Then don't rush. We have time."

For the first time, I felt something I had never expected.

A missing piece of my life had finally been found.

But there was still one person I needed to understand.

My mother.

The woman who had raised me.

I approached her.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

She looked devastated.

"Because I was afraid you would stop loving me."

I knelt beside her.

"You were my mother when I was sick. You were my mother when I had nightmares. You were my mother when nobody else showed up."

I hugged her.

"That doesn't disappear because I know where I came from."

She held me tightly.

And for the first time in years, I saw her smile without fear.

Three weeks later, Luca and I returned to the estate.

The investigation had exposed Salvatore's financial crimes, the falsified medical reports, and the attempted murder of Luca's father.

Several members of the family leadership were arrested.

Others fled Boston.

Luca refused to take control of the empire through violence.

Instead, he began dismantling the businesses that had been used to fund the criminal network.

Some people called him weak.

Others called him dangerous.

But I knew the truth.

He was trying to build something that wouldn't destroy the people he loved.

Our baby was growing.

My mother was receiving the treatment she needed.

Victoria visited every Sunday.

And Marco brought Nicolas to the estate for dinner.

The first time Luca met his younger brother, neither man knew what to say.

They simply stood facing each other.

Then Luca pulled him into a hug.

I watched from the doorway.

And I understood something.

Family wasn't always about blood.

Sometimes it was about the people who refused to abandon you.

One evening, Luca found me standing in the nursery.

The room was painted a soft cream color.

A wooden crib stood beneath the window.

Tiny clothes were folded inside a dresser.

He wrapped his arms around my waist.

"Thinking about our little one?"

I nodded.

"Do you ever wonder what our life would have been like if we'd never signed that contract?"

He kissed my temple.

"I would have found you eventually."

I laughed.

"That's a very confident answer."

"I'm a Varenna."

"That isn't always a good thing."

He smiled.

Then he rested his hand over my stomach.

"Whatever happens, our child will never grow up believing love is something that has to be earned."

I turned toward him.

"Promise?"

"On my life."

For a moment, everything felt peaceful.

Then his phone rang.

He glanced at the screen.

His expression changed.

"Who is it?"

He didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward the window.

"Hello?"

I watched him listen.

His face gradually lost its color.

"Where did you get that?"

A pause.

Then he whispered:

"That's impossible."

He ended the call.

"Luca?"

He looked at me.

There was fear in his eyes.

Real fear.

"What happened?"

He walked back into the nursery and showed me his phone.

A photograph filled the screen.

It showed Luca's father standing beside a woman outside a hospital.

The date was thirteen years earlier.

And the woman was holding a newborn baby.

On the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.

To my son. If the first two children are ever found, remember that there was a third.

I looked at Luca.

"Three?"

He nodded slowly.

"Apparently, our family has one more secret."

"Who is the third child?"

His phone vibrated again.

A message appeared.

The third Varenna heir is alive. And he knows your wife is pregnant.

Luca immediately pulled me closer.

Before he could call Marco, another message arrived.

This time, it contained a photograph of our front gate.

A black car was parked outside.

Someone had written a single sentence beneath it.

Congratulations on your baby, Luca. I hope this one survives.

I felt my husband's arms tighten around me.

Then, from somewhere downstairs, the security alarm began screaming.

Luca reached for his gun.

"Stay behind me."

I held his hand.

And as the nursery lights flickered, I realized the truth.

We had uncovered twelve years of lies.

We had found the missing children.

We had exposed the man who destroyed the family.

But someone had been watching us from the beginning.

And whoever it was knew exactly when our baby was supposed to be born.

Because the greatest secret of the Varenna family wasn't that Luca had been lied to about his ability to become a father.

May you like

It was that someone had been waiting twenty-seven years for his child to be born.

And they were coming for the baby before it ever had a chance to open its eyes.
