Chapter 10 - THE LIFE WE CHOSE

One year later, I woke to sunlight.
Not alarms.
Not gunfire.
Not footsteps outside the bedroom.
Sunlight.
Marcus was beside me.
His arm was around my waist.
I smiled.
For three years, I had slept alone.
Now I couldn't remember how I had survived it.
Marcus opened his eyes.
"Morning."
"Morning."
He kissed my forehead.
Then my cheek.
Then my lips.
Every kiss still felt like a miracle.
"You're staring," he murmured.
"I'm allowed."
"Why?"
"You're my husband."
He smiled.
"Still?"
"Unfortunately."
He laughed.
Downstairs, Nico was arguing with Alessandro about breakfast.
Maya, the daughter of one of Marcus's longtime employees, was visiting.
The house was loud.
Messy.
Alive.
Nothing like the silent penthouse where I had once eaten dinner alone.
We had sold it.
Marcus had moved us into a smaller house outside Austin.
There were no armed guards at every door.
No secret tunnels.
No cameras hidden behind paintings.
Just a normal home.
Marcus had kept one security team.
"Because I'm still me," he always said.
But he no longer carried a weapon to breakfast.
That was progress.
His legitimate businesses were thriving.
He had turned several old warehouses into legal logistics centers.
He funded scholarships.
He built a foundation in Sofia's name.
Sofia survived her injuries and moved to California.
Alessandro became the head of security for the foundation.
Nico went to college.
And my father?
He lived quietly under a protected identity.
He visited once a month.
We were still repairing our relationship.
But at least he was alive.
As for Isabella, she remained in prison.
She had written me letters.
I didn't answer all of them.
Some wounds needed time.
But I no longer hated her.
That was enough.
One Saturday morning, Marcus took me somewhere unexpected.
A small church.
The same church where he had once nearly been killed protecting me.
I looked at him.
"What are we doing here?"
He smiled.
"Something I should have done three years ago."
Inside were only our closest friends.
Sofia had flown in.
Nico was standing beside Alessandro.
My father sat in the front row.
I stared at Marcus.
He took my hands.
"I promised to protect you."
"You did."
"But I made one mistake."
"What?"
"I thought protecting you meant keeping you away from my heart."
My eyes filled with tears.
He continued.
"Today, I want everyone to know that you're not my contract."
He looked at me.
"You're my choice."
I smiled.
Then he repeated our vows.
This time, there was no debt.
No mafia arrangement.
No threat.
No secret.
Just love.
When he kissed me, everyone applauded.
Nico shouted:
"About time!"
Everyone laughed.
Later that evening, we stood outside beneath a sky filled with stars.
Marcus wrapped his arms around me.
I leaned against his chest.
"Do you remember the night I cut my foot?"
He laughed softly.
"The vase?"
"Yes."
"You nearly gave me a heart attack."
"You barely knew how to look at me before that."
"I knew exactly how to look at you."
I turned.
"Then why didn't you?"
He touched my cheek.
"Because if I let myself love you, I knew I would become afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
"Losing you."
I smiled.
"You don't have to be afraid anymore."
He kissed my forehead.
"I know."
I looked toward the house.
Nico was arguing with Alessandro again.
My father was laughing.
Sofia was telling a story.
For the first time, our family wasn't connected by fear.
It was connected by choice.
I rested my head against Marcus's shoulder.
Three years ago, I thought I had been sold into a marriage.
I thought my husband didn't want me.
I thought his silence meant indifference.
I was wrong.
His silence had been fear.
His distance had been protection.
And his coldness had hidden a love so deep that even he had been afraid of it.
The man the city feared had spent three years terrified of losing one woman.
Me.
And eventually, he learned the most important lesson of all.
Love isn't protection when it becomes a cage.
Love is opening the door…
and trusting the person you love to walk through it beside you.
Marcus took my hand.
"Ready?"
"For what?"
"Whatever comes next."
I smiled.
"With you?"
"Always."
I squeezed his hand.
"Then yes."
We walked toward the house together.
Toward our family.
Toward our future.
And for the first time since the day I became Mrs. Valentino, I wasn't walking into a beautiful prison.
May you like
I was walking home.
