Chapter 5 - THE WIDOW'S SECRET

Anthony stared at the photograph until the edges blurred.

Catherine was wearing the blue coat he had bought her for their last anniversary.

Her face was thinner.

Her hair was covered by a scarf.

But it was unquestionably her.

“Where did you get this?”

“An old surveillance archive,” Caleb replied. “It was recovered from a private storage server.”

“Who took it?”

“We don't know.”

Anthony picked up the photograph.

“Catherine was in the hospital that week.”

“According to the medical records, yes.”

“Then explain this.”

Caleb lowered his voice.

“Tony, there's something else. The hospital's records show that Catherine's final transfer was authorized by an outside medical consultant.”

“Name?”

“Dr. Peter Lawson.”

Anthony remembered him.

Lawson had been part of Catherine's oncology team.

He had delivered the final prognosis.

He had stood beside Anthony when the doctors explained that nothing more could be done.

Anthony felt his stomach tighten.

“Find him.”

At that moment, Sophie's voice came from the doorway.

“Don't.”

Both men turned.

Sophie stood holding an old photograph.

Behind her was Evelyn.

Her mother looked exhausted but determined.

“Before you do anything,” Evelyn said, “you need to hear what Catherine discovered.”

She placed the photograph on the desk.

It showed Catherine and Michael Mallory sitting together in a small restaurant.

On the back were four words.

The money is not money.

Anthony frowned.

“What does that mean?”

Evelyn sat down.

“Your companies were being used to hide something much bigger than stolen funds. Michael discovered that certain shipments were being redirected through legitimate freight routes. Some carried illegal weapons. Others carried people.”

Anthony looked at Caleb.

“Human trafficking?”

Caleb's face darkened.

“We've heard rumors.”

“Your father discovered the operation,” Anthony said to Sophie.

She nodded.

“He wanted to expose it. But someone found out.”

Evelyn continued.

“Catherine helped him gather evidence. She believed she could use your name to force an investigation without exposing you.”

Anthony felt something break inside his chest.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“Because she believed someone close to you was listening to every conversation.”

He looked at the photograph again.

“Victor.”

Evelyn nodded.

“But Catherine was afraid of something else.”

“What?”

“She believed Raymond Kessler had a partner inside your family.”

Anthony went silent.

He had one brother.

Frank Bellucci.

Frank had managed several of their legitimate businesses for decades.

And he had been the person who insisted that Catherine's final arrangements be handled privately.

“Where is my brother?” Anthony asked.

Caleb checked his phone.

“His office. But, Tony, you need to see this first.”

He opened another image.

A bank transfer.

Six million dollars.

The account belonged to Frank Bellucci.

The recipient was a medical research foundation that had paid Catherine's hospital consultant.

Anthony stared at the screen.

“Call Frank.”

No answer.

He tried again.

Voicemail.

Then his phone rang.

Frank.

Anthony answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

“Home.”

“Stay there.”

A pause.

Then Frank said something that made Anthony's blood turn cold.

“Tony, I think you should come alone.”

“Why?”

“Because Catherine wasn't the only one who knew the truth.”

Anthony looked toward Sophie.

Frank continued.

“Your wife left something behind. Something that proves you helped build the operation without knowing it.”

The call ended.

Anthony lowered the phone.

Sophie stepped closer.

“What did he mean?”

Anthony looked at her.

“I don't know.”

But for the first time, he was beginning to wonder whether the empire he had spent his life building had been built on a foundation of lies.
