Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH CLAIRE BURIED

Vincent sat motionless.

"Before our wedding?"

Claire nodded, tears gathering in her eyes.

"I was pregnant when we first met."

He tried to remember.

They had met at the charity auction five years earlier. They had dated for nearly a year before marrying. Claire had never mentioned a previous pregnancy.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I lost the baby before I knew how to tell you."

Vincent looked down.

"Was it mine?"

Claire's eyes widened.

"Of course it was."

He immediately regretted the question.

"I didn't mean—"

"Yes, you did."

She turned her face away.

"I was six weeks pregnant when the doctor told me. I was devastated. You were in New York negotiating a business deal, and I couldn't reach you. When you finally called, you were angry because I had missed a dinner with your grandfather."

Vincent remembered that evening.

He remembered being irritated because Claire had said she wasn't feeling well. He remembered telling her she needed to stop letting small problems interfere with family obligations.

He had never known she was grieving.

"Why didn't you tell me afterward?"

"Because I didn't want you to feel guilty. And because I was afraid you'd treat me differently."

"Claire—"

"I thought if I waited until we were married, we could start over. I thought you'd be more present. I thought you'd want a family with me."

Her voice broke.

"Then I watched you spend more time taking care of Sophia than you spent taking care of me. I couldn't bear the thought of bringing a child into a home where its mother had to beg its father to notice her."

Vincent pressed his palms against his eyes.

For years, he had believed that his greatest failure was missing the delivery.

Now he understood that the abandonment had begun long before the hospital.

"I didn't know," he whispered.

"You didn't ask."

The words silenced him.

Claire looked toward the neonatal unit.

"I wanted our son to have a father. I still do. But I need him to grow up knowing that love doesn't mean tolerating humiliation."

"I understand."

"Do you?"

He looked at her.

"I think I'm beginning to."

She studied him for a long moment.

Then she reached beneath the blanket and pulled out a folded document.

"This came from my father. I kept it because I didn't know what to do with it."

Vincent opened it carefully.

It was a letter addressed to Claire, dated three days before Thomas's death.

My darling Claire,

There are things about the Moretti family that I wish I could explain to you. Your mother and I spent years trying to protect you from a world that believes money can purchase forgiveness and power can erase consequences.

If anything happens to me, please remember that you are not responsible for the sins of the people you love.

There is a child whose future depends on the truth. I have done what I can to keep that child safe, but I fear I have run out of time.

If you ever meet someone who asks you to choose between loyalty and conscience, choose conscience.

Love, Dad.

Vincent read the letter twice.

"Who was the child?"

Claire shook her head.

"I never found out. After my father died, I searched his records, but the documents were gone. I only knew he had been trying to protect someone."

She took a shaky breath.

"Then, two months ago, I received a message from Sophia. She said she had information about my father's death. She wanted to meet me privately."

"What did she tell you?"

"She said my father had discovered that a child connected to the Moretti family had been hidden from the public. She said your grandfather knew where the child was."

Vincent felt his heart pound.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because she threatened to expose the child if I involved you."

He stared at her.

"And you believed her?"

"I believed she had information she could use to hurt an innocent person."

Claire reached for his hand.

This time, she did not stop herself.

"I was wrong about one thing, Vincent. I thought keeping the secret would protect everyone. Instead, it allowed Sophia to control the truth."

He held her hand gently.

"What do we do now?"

"We find the child."

"And if the child is connected to my family?"

"Then we make sure the child is safe. We don't use the truth to punish anyone who had no choice in what happened."

Vincent nodded.

He wanted to promise her that he would fix everything.

Instead, he asked, "What do you need from me?"

Claire looked at him with tired eyes.

"Be here tomorrow when our son opens his eyes."

"I will."

"And don't bring Sophia near him."

"I won't."

"And when I leave the hospital, don't assume I'm coming home with you."

The words hurt, but he accepted them.

"I understand."

That evening, Dr. Patel brought encouraging news. The baby had stabilized enough to begin a cautious reduction in respiratory support.

The medical team was optimistic, though the child would remain in intensive care for some time.

Vincent and Claire were allowed to stand beside the incubator together.

Their son opened his eyes briefly.

Claire began to cry.

"Hello, sweetheart," she whispered.

Vincent stood beside her, afraid to interrupt the moment.

The baby closed his eyes again.

But Claire was smiling.

For the first time since the delivery, Vincent felt something other than fear.

Hope.

Then Marco arrived carrying a sealed envelope.

"We found something in the archived records from your father's estate."

Vincent opened it.

Inside was a birth certificate.

The father's name had been blacked out in the copy, but the mother's name was clearly visible.

Sophia Reynolds.

The child's date of birth matched the photograph Emily had brought to the hospital.

Vincent stared at the document.

Sophia had a child.

A child she had hidden for years.

And the evidence suggested that the baby had been connected to the secret Thomas Bennett died trying to expose.

Claire's hand tightened around his.

"Vincent," she whispered, "there's something else you need to understand."

May you like

He looked at her.

"The child in that photograph may be the reason Sophia came into your life in the first place."
