Chapter 6 - THE BETRAYAL INSIDE THE HOUSE

Gabriel moved before Vincent could fire.
He shoved Khloe behind the piano as the first bullet struck the wall.
The room erupted into chaos.
Vincent had been Gabriel's closest enforcer for eleven years. He knew his habits, his weaknesses, and the way he reached for a weapon.
But Khloe knew something Vincent didn't.
The room had a second exit.
She pulled open a narrow storage panel behind the piano and dragged Gabriel through it.
They emerged into a dark corridor.
Behind them, Vincent shouted.
“There's nowhere to go!”
Khloe ran.
Gabriel followed, one hand pressed against his bleeding side.
They reached the loading area just as two vehicles pulled into the warehouse yard.
Caldwell's men.
Gabriel fired toward the first vehicle while Khloe grabbed a metal emergency lever.
The warehouse shutters began descending.
One attacker tried to rush beneath them.
Khloe struck his arm with the heavy door handle, knocking his weapon away.
Gabriel pulled her toward an old delivery van.
They escaped through a side gate.
For several blocks, neither spoke.
Finally, Gabriel looked at her.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
“Your hand is bleeding.”
She examined her palm.
A piece of broken glass had cut her skin.
“It's nothing.”
Gabriel tore a strip from his shirt and wrapped it around her hand.
His fingers were careful.
Unexpectedly gentle.
Khloe watched him.
“Why does everyone around you eventually betray you?”
He tightened the bandage.
“Because I built my life around people who were paid to be loyal.”
“And now?”
He met her eyes.
“Now I don't know who I am without them.”
The admission surprised her.
For a moment, he looked less like a powerful crime boss and more like a man who had spent too many years sleeping with one eye open.
They stopped at a small motel outside the city.
Gabriel refused to let her use the main entrance.
He checked the room, the windows, and the parking lot before allowing her inside.
Khloe placed the flash drive on the table.
“We need to listen to it.”
Gabriel nodded.
They connected it to an encrypted laptop.
A video appeared.
Evelyn Harper sat in a chair, wearing the blue blouse Khloe remembered from childhood.
Her face was thinner.
Her eyes were tired.
But she was alive.
“Khloe, sweetheart,” she began.
Khloe covered her mouth.
“If you're watching this, then your father has either disappeared or someone has finally found you.”
Evelyn looked toward the camera.
“I need you to understand something. Your father wasn't the monster people described. But he wasn't innocent either.”
She paused.
“He built a financial network that allowed powerful men to hide crimes behind respectable businesses. When he discovered that Arthur Caldwell was using that network to traffic women and children, he tried to shut it down.”
Khloe felt sick.
Her father had discovered the truth.
He had tried to stop it.
And someone had decided to make him disappear.
Evelyn continued.
“Gabriel Rossi helped him at first. But Gabriel was young, ambitious, and desperate to control the organization. He made a deal with Caldwell.”
Khloe turned toward Gabriel.
He didn't move.
“What deal?” she whispered.
The recording continued.
“Michael Caldwell was supposed to be transferred safely into federal custody. Instead, he died during a confrontation with Gabriel's men.”
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“Your father blamed himself. He believed he had trusted the wrong person.”
Khloe stopped the video.
She couldn't listen anymore.
Gabriel stood.
“It's true.”
She looked at him.
“You promised my father you would protect me.”
“I did.”
“And you helped kill Michael.”
“Yes.”
“You don't get to be both the man who saves me and the man who destroyed another family.”
Gabriel's expression tightened.
“I know.”
Khloe moved away.
Then the laptop chimed.
A second video file had appeared.
It had been hidden inside the flash drive's encrypted partition.
Khloe opened it.
A man appeared on the screen.
Older.
Pale.
With silver hair and a familiar scar above his eyebrow.
Daniel Harper.
Her father.
He looked directly into the camera.
“Khloe, if you've reached this recording, then I need you to do something for me.”
He leaned forward.
“Do not trust Gabriel Rossi.”
The video flickered.
Then her father spoke the words that changed everything.
“He is not the man who ordered your mother's death.”
May you like
A pause.
“I am.”
