Chapter 1 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO FOLLOWED THE MAFIA BOSS

"The most feared mafia boss in New York caught my four-year-old daughter secretly following him through his mansion, copying his every move. I thought he was about to fire me, or worse, until my little girl looked him straight in the eyes and said six words that shattered eighteen months of silence.

My name is Claire Parker, and I worked as a housekeeper for Vincent Moretti, a man whose name could make powerful people tremble.

But my daughter Emma knew nothing about his reputation.

To her, he was simply a sad man who walked alone.

Emma was four, with rosy cheeks, sparkling blue eyes, and golden-blonde curls woven into delicate braids. She adored her sage-green princess dress, with its tiny ivory flowers and soft layers of tulle.

And somehow, that little princess became the only person brave enough to follow Vincent Moretti.

Every afternoon at exactly four, Vincent walked through the mansion's marble hallway.

Nobody dared disturb him.

Eighteen months earlier, his beloved wife, Elena, had died protecting him from a bullet meant for his heart.

She died at four o'clock.

Since then, he had repeated the same lonely walk, passing her locked sitting room without ever opening the door.

Until Emma noticed.

One afternoon, I caught her following him, her tiny hands clasped behind her back.

When Vincent straightened his shoulders, she straightened hers.

When he frowned, she scrunched up her adorable little face.

""Emma!"" I whispered desperately. ""Come here!""

""But Mommy,"" she protested, ""he looks so sad.""

I tried everything to stop her.

Cookies. Cartoons. Even promises of ice cream.

Nothing worked.

For thirteen afternoons, my daughter secretly marched behind the most dangerous man I'd ever met.

Then came the fourteenth.

Vincent suddenly stopped.

Emma stopped.

He turned.

My heart nearly burst.

""Why do you keep following me?"" he demanded.

I rushed forward, trembling.

""Mr. Moretti, please! She's only four. I'll make sure it never happens again!""

He raised one hand.

""Let her answer.""

Emma stepped forward, her ivory Mary Jane shoes clicking against the marble.

""Because you look lonely,"" she whispered.

The entire hallway fell silent.

Vincent stared at her.

""What did you say?""

Emma pointed toward Elena's locked sitting room.

""You always walk past that door by yourself.""

His expression hardened, but Emma continued.

""Mommy says when somebody is sad, they shouldn't have to be alone.""

Vincent swallowed.

""So I thought maybe I could walk with you.""

For the first time in eighteen months, something extraordinary happened.

Vincent Moretti smiled.

Then he laughed.

A real, beautiful laugh that echoed beneath the chandeliers.

Emma beamed.

""See? Now you're not lonely!""

But what happened next nearly brought me to my knees.

Vincent slowly crouched before my daughter, his eyes glistening.

May you like

Then he reached into his jacket and pulled out something I never imagined he would show another living soul...
