Chapter 7 - THE FIANCÉE WHO NEVER LEFT

The hospital staff took Celeste into surgery. Doctors told them she had a chance, but no one could promise she would survive.
Nate stood in the corridor with his hands stained by her blood.
Hannah sat in a wheelchair nearby, exhausted and furious.
“You knew about Amelia,” she said.
“I knew she disappeared.”
“You said she left you.”
“That's what my mother told me.”
“And you believed her.”
Nate looked at her.
“She was twenty-four. She was going to marry me. One night, she told me she had found evidence that Julian was stealing money from my father. The next morning, she was gone. My mother said Amelia had taken money and run away.”
“Did you look for her?”
“For years.”
“Did you tell the police?”
“My father told me it would expose the family to our enemies. I was young, angry, and stupid enough to listen.”
Hannah's eyes filled with tears.
“You didn't just lose Amelia. You helped bury the truth.”
Nate looked as though she had struck him.
“I know.”
Walter arrived with a phone in his hand.
“Celeste's shooter escaped. One of my men found a vehicle registered to Julian's security company.”
“Then we go to the police,” Hannah said.
Walter shook his head. “We will. But first, we need evidence that cannot be dismissed as a family dispute.”
Hannah held up the brass key.
“The safe deposit box.”
They went to the bank after the doctors confirmed that Hannah could travel briefly with medical supervision. Ethan insisted on accompanying her and the baby.
The box contained a birth certificate, a photograph of Amelia holding a newborn, and a sealed letter addressed to Nate.
He stared at the photograph.
The child in Amelia's arms had the same birthmark as Lily.
Hannah looked at the certificate.
The father's name had been left blank.
Nate opened the letter with trembling hands.
Nathaniel,
If you are reading this, I have failed to protect the child. Your mother knows what happened. Julian has the records. Do not trust anyone who tells you that I left willingly.
I loved you. But I could not bring a child into a family that treats blood as property.
If you ever discover the truth, find my daughter. Her name is Lily.
Nate sat down heavily.
“She was pregnant.”
Walter closed his eyes.
“I suspected it.”
“You knew?”
“I knew Amelia had gone to your mother for help. I didn't know she was carrying your child.”
Hannah stared at him.
“Everyone in this family knew something. Everyone kept quiet. And now a newborn is paying for all of it.”
Nate pressed the letter against his forehead.
“I never knew.”
“You didn't ask enough questions,” Hannah said. “That doesn't make you innocent.”
He nodded, tears finally slipping down his face.
The documents established that Amelia had tried to expose the family's illegal accounts. Her daughter had been hidden under a false identity, and the records had been altered to prevent her from inheriting anything.
But one question remained.
If Amelia had been murdered, where was her body?
Walter took them to an abandoned property outside the city. It had once belonged to his older brother, the man whose descendants were entitled to the trust.
The house had been empty for years.
In the basement, they found a locked cabinet containing ledgers, old photographs, and a small cassette recorder.
Nate pressed PLAY.
A woman's voice filled the room.
Margaret's.
“Amelia, please. You can still fix this. Sign the papers and leave the child with me.”
Another voice answered.
“You can't own my daughter.”
A crash followed.
Then Julian spoke.
“It's done.”
The recording ended.
Hannah felt sick.
Nate stared at the machine as though it had become a weapon pointed at his heart.
Walter found a second envelope hidden beneath the recorder. Inside was a handwritten map and a list of dates.
The final date was tomorrow.
Beside it were two words.
TRUST RELEASE.
“Tomorrow is when the trustee opens the files,” Hannah said.
Walter nodded.
“Unless Margaret has already changed the conditions.”
A phone rang in Nate's pocket.
The number was blocked.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Bring the boy to the Blackwood estate before midnight. Bring no police. If you refuse, the girl dies.”
Nate's face went pale.
Hannah reached for the phone.
“Put it on speaker.”
The voice continued.
“Your mother has one child in her custody and another one she wants erased. You have one chance to save them both.”
Then a child's voice came through the line.
“Daddy?”
Nate nearly dropped the phone.
The little girl was crying.
“Daddy, please come get me.”
The line went dead.
Nate looked at Hannah.
His eyes were full of terror.
“She called me Daddy.”
Hannah held their newborn closer.
For the first time, she understood the true shape of the conspiracy.

Margaret wasn't simply protecting a fortune.
She was deciding which children were allowed to exist.
