Chapter 1 - Blood Beneath Vale House

The Mafia Boss Smelled Blood on His Maid’s Sleeve and the Name She Whispered Made Him Lock Every Door in the House

At 2:13 in the morning, Roman Vale walked into his kitchen for a glass of water and smelled blood before he saw it.

He stopped beneath the archway.

Across the enormous white-marble kitchen, Claire Bennett stood at the sink with one sleeve shoved beneath running water. Her back was turned to him. Her shoulders shook violently as she scrubbed at a dark stain with a dish brush.

Roman had spent twenty years surviving rooms where men smiled before trying to kill him.

He knew the smell of blood.

And that stain was fresh.

“Claire.”

The brush slipped from her hand.

She spun around so quickly her hip struck the counter.

“Mr. Vale.”

Roman said nothing.

Claire immediately pulled her left arm behind her back.

That was her second mistake.

Her first had been believing Roman Vale failed to notice anything that happened beneath his roof.

He crossed the kitchen slowly.

Even barefoot and dressed only in black slacks and a gray T-shirt, Roman looked like a man who had walked out of a boardroom where somebody had just lost an empire. At forty-one, he was broad-shouldered, controlled, and frighteningly calm. A faded scar disappeared beneath his collar, and another crossed the back of his right hand.

People in Blackridge, New York, called him a businessman when microphones were present.

When microphones were not present, they called him the man who owned half the city and frightened the other half.

Claire swallowed.

“I broke a glass.”

Roman stopped three feet from her.

“No, you didn’t.”

Her eyes flickered.

“I cut myself.”

“Show me.”

“It’s nothing.”

“Claire.”

He almost never raised his voice.

He did not need to.

Slowly, she brought her arm forward.

The sleeve of her housekeeping uniform was wet from the sink, but water had only spread the crimson stain farther across the pale fabric.

Roman caught her wrist.

Claire flinched.

His expression changed instantly.

Not anger.

Something colder.

He turned her hand palm-up.

No cut.

He examined her fingers.

Nothing.

His gaze traveled toward her face.

Claire had worked at Vale House for eleven months. She was thirty-two, soft-spoken, observant, and curvy enough that previous employers had spent years making her feel she occupied more space than she deserved.

Roman had never understood that.

What he had noticed was that Claire remembered every guest’s coffee order, could hear a failing refrigerator motor from two rooms away, and somehow knew which employee had moved a vase even when thirty people had crossed the room.

He had also noticed she apologized too often.

Tonight, she looked terrified.

Roman touched the stain with two fingers.

Then he lifted them to his nose.

Claire’s breathing stopped.

“Human blood,” he said.

“I can explain.”

“I’m sure you can.”

“It isn’t mine.”

Roman looked at the faint bruising beginning to form around her wrist.

His face became completely still.

That stillness was more frightening than rage.

“Who touched you?”

Claire stared at him.

“Mr. Vale—”

“Who touched you?”

“Please don’t ask me that.”

His thumb rested over her pulse.

It was racing.

Roman lowered his voice.

“Someone put his hands on a woman under my protection, inside my home, after midnight. I’m going to ask once more.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“Who touched you?”

Her answer came barely above a whisper.

“Come downstairs.”

Roman’s gaze sharpened.

“Where?”

“The old pantry beneath the wine room.”

For the first time that night, Roman looked surprised.

Only for a second.

Then he released her wrist.

“Lead the way.”

The underground level of Vale House had been built more than a century earlier, when the property belonged to a railroad investor who believed stone walls could protect a family from anything.

Roman knew better.

Nothing protected a family from everything.

Claire descended the narrow servants’ staircase with one hand gripping the railing.

Roman followed.

“You should call security,” she whispered.

“No.”

She looked back.

“Why?”

“Because you haven’t told me what happened.”

“And?”

“And until you do, nobody knows we’re down here.”

That frightened her more than if he had shouted.

The wine cellar stretched beneath the east side of the house, filled with dark shelving and temperature-controlled cases. Claire passed all of it.

At the far end stood a door most people thought was a supply closet.

She stopped.

Roman noticed her hands shaking.

“Claire.”

She closed her eyes.

“He thought I’d be easy.”

Roman said nothing.

She looked at him.

“He looked at me and decided I was weak before I even opened my mouth.”

Something in Roman’s jaw tightened.

“Open the door.”

Claire did.

A fluorescent light flickered overhead.

Roman stepped inside.

Then stopped.

A man lay beside a collapsed wooden shelf.

He wore black clothes with no logos, no identification, nothing that suggested where he had come from. Blood darkened the side of his neck and the concrete beneath him.

Several feet away rested a compact pistol and a thin utility blade.

A broken jar of preserved tomatoes had painted half the floor red, making the scene look even worse than it was.

Roman crouched.

Two fingers against the man’s throat.

Nothing.

He searched one pocket and removed a small electronic device.

Roman’s expression changed.

He knew what it was.

A security bypass tool.

He stood.

“Tell me.”

Claire pressed both hands against her stomach.

“I came down for rosemary.”

“At two in the morning?”

“Chef Daniel wanted the breakfast prep finished before six. We ran out upstairs.”

Roman nodded.

She continued.

“I heard something behind the electrical cabinet. I thought one of the maintenance guys was working late.”

Her voice trembled.

“When I opened the door, he was connecting that device to the old security line.”

Roman looked toward the wall.

A metal panel hung open.

Several wires had been clipped.

“He saw me,” Claire said. “He laughed.”

Roman’s eyes returned to her.

May you like

“What did he say?”
