Chapter 6 - Blood Is Not Loyalty

Salvatore Rossi had disappeared.
His mansion was empty.
His phones were disconnected.
His accounts had been drained 48 hours earlier.
Gabriel stood inside his uncle's study staring at the chair where Salvatore had taught him how to play chess when he was twelve.
“He raised me.”
Nora stood beside him.
“That doesn't make what he did your fault.”
Gabriel gave a hollow laugh.
“I built everything on his lessons.”
At eighteen, Gabriel had inherited chaos.
Salvatore had taught him to turn fear into order.
Never react emotionally.
Never forgive betrayal.
Never expose weakness.
And above everything:
Family first.
Now Gabriel understood the cruelty of it.
Salvatore had murdered his brother and spent 18 years teaching the victim's son about loyalty.
Marco entered carrying a tablet.
“We have movement.”
A bank camera showed Salvatore entering the First Metropolitan Bank 20 minutes earlier.
The same bank encoded inside Nora's ring.
“He knows about the box,” Nora said.
Gabriel looked at her.
“You stay here.”
“No.”
“Nora.”
“We already had this conversation.”
“He killed my father and probably your mother.”
“Exactly.”
“This is not negotiable.”
“Then stop pretending you're negotiating.”
Marco turned away to hide a smile.
Gabriel glared at him.
Nora stepped closer.
“My mother died protecting whatever is inside that box. I am going.”
Gabriel held her gaze.
Then slowly nodded.
“Beside me.”
“Beside you.”
Not behind.
That mattered.
They reached the bank shortly before noon.
Gabriel's influence opened doors money alone could not.
The vault manager led them downstairs.
Box 417.
Nora entered the code.
Nothing.
She tried again.
Red light.
Gabriel looked at the ring.
“Maybe the numbers aren't the code.”
Nora examined the inside inscription.
Then she remembered something.
Her mother's birthday.
She entered it.
Click.
The box opened.
Inside was no ledger.
Only a cassette tape and a sealed envelope.
Nora frowned.
Gabriel picked up the envelope.
Written across it:
FOR OUR CHILDREN.
Plural.
Gabriel and Nora looked at each other.
The vault manager found an old tape player.
Static filled the small room.
Then a woman's voice.
Nora covered her mouth.
Her mother.
“If this recording is being played, Vittorio and I probably failed.”
A man's voice followed.
Gabriel closed his eyes.
His father.
“Gabriel, if someday you hear this, I need you to understand something. Power without choice is another kind of prison.”
Gabriel stopped breathing.
Nora took his hand.
The recording continued.
Vittorio described Salvatore's network.
Police.
Politicians.
Judges.
Shipping executives.
But then came the revelation.
The ledger was never paper.
It was a financial account database distributed across several encrypted storage systems.
The cassette contained the first password.
The second was hidden somewhere only Evelyn's daughter would understand.
Nora whispered, “Me.”
Her mother's voice returned.
“Nora, sweetheart, remember the place where we watched the stars even when there were no stars.”
Nora began crying.
“I know where it is.”
Gabriel squeezed her hand.
“Where?”
“My childhood apartment.”
Before they could move, the vault door slammed.
Gabriel turned.
Locked.
Smoke began pouring through the ventilation grate.
“Down!”
Gabriel pulled Nora toward the floor.
Marco's voice shouted faintly beyond the steel.
Someone had infiltrated the bank.
Gabriel covered Nora's mouth with his jacket.
She coughed.
“Gabriel—”
“Stay low.”
“You stay low.”
Even then, he almost smiled.
Outside, gunshots sounded.
Then silence.
Nora's vision blurred.
Gabriel held her close.
“Look at me.”
She did.
“Slow breaths.”
The door finally opened.
Marco appeared wearing his shirt over his nose.
“Move!”
They escaped through a service corridor.
Outside, police vehicles screamed toward the bank.
Nora leaned against Gabriel's SUV.
Then she noticed a black sedan across the street.
An older man sat inside.
Silver hair.
Familiar eyes.
Gabriel saw him.
“Salvatore.”
The sedan pulled away.
Gabriel started after it.
Nora grabbed his hand.
“Don't.”
He turned.
“He wants you angry.”
Gabriel looked down at their joined hands.
Nora emphasized every word.
“Then don't give him what he wants.”
Gabriel stopped.

For the first time in his life, revenge waited.
Truth came first.
