Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH BENEATH THE LIE

Sarah Bennett agreed to meet Dominic at a roadside diner two hours outside Chicago.

She refused to come to the mansion. She refused to speak over the telephone for more than a minute at a time. And when Dominic offered to send security, she insisted he come alone.

He understood why.

Every person connected to Elena's death had been watched, threatened, or manipulated. Sarah had raised Isabella for nearly five years under a false surname. If she was telling the truth, she had spent those years protecting a child from a family powerful enough to erase people from their own history.

Dominic arrived before sunrise.

Sarah sat in a booth near the back, wearing a baseball cap and a gray coat. She looked to be in her late forties, with tired eyes and a thin scar across her chin.

She placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Isabella at four years old, smiling beneath a maple tree.

Dominic could barely look at it.

“She likes strawberries,” Sarah said quietly. “She's afraid of thunderstorms. She sleeps with a stuffed rabbit named Captain, and she asks questions about her parents every night.”

Dominic swallowed.

“What did you tell her?”

“That her mother loved her. That her father was searching for her.”

He lowered his eyes.

“I didn't know she existed.”

“I know.”

Sarah's voice softened.

“But she deserves to know you were never the one who abandoned her.”

Dominic looked up.

“Who is her biological father?”

Sarah slid a sealed envelope across the table.

“Dr. Paul Whitaker.”

Dominic stared at her.

“No.”

“Elena discovered she was pregnant before she and you were married. She believed you would never forgive her for what happened.”

“That's impossible.”

Sarah shook her head.

“I don't know the circumstances. I only know what Elena wrote in a letter she gave me before she died.”

Dominic opened the envelope.

The letter was dated October 15, 2021.

Sarah,

If anything happens to me, please protect my daughter. Her father is a man who believes he can control the truth by controlling the people who know it.

I made a terrible mistake years ago. I trusted someone who promised to help me when Dominic and I were separated. That person became a threat I could never escape.

I don't know whether I can tell Dominic everything before the baby is born. I only know that I cannot allow my child to be used as leverage against the Moretti family.

If the worst happens, raise her with kindness. Let her become a person who doesn't need power to feel safe.

Dominic read the letter again.

His hands shook.

He and Elena had been separated briefly five years earlier after a violent dispute involving his family's business. During those months, he had buried himself in work, believing that distance would protect her from the consequences of his choices.

He had never asked whether she had found comfort elsewhere.

He had assumed their marriage had survived because love was enough.

Now he wondered whether he had ever truly understood her.

“Why did Elena stay with me?” he asked.

Sarah looked at him with compassion.

“Because she loved you. But love doesn't mean someone can forgive everything.”

Dominic stared at the letter.

“Did Whitaker know about the baby?”

“Yes. He helped arrange her birth. But he wasn't the one who took her.”

“Why would a doctor become the Chairman?”

Sarah shook her head.

“I don't know if he created the organization. Elena believed he was the person directing it. He had access to medical records, private facilities, and people who could make inconvenient evidence disappear.”

Dominic's mind returned to the photograph of Whitaker beside Elena.

“Where is he now?”

“Dead, according to the news.”

Dominic looked up sharply.

“When?”

“Four years ago. His car was found near a river outside Milwaukee. The authorities ruled it an accident.”

Another death.

Another convenient accident.

Dominic took out his phone and called Eleanor Price.

“Find every record you can on Paul Whitaker. Medical licenses, bank accounts, property, death certificates. I want to know whether he's really dead.”

Eleanor promised to investigate.

Sarah reached across the table.

“There is one more thing.”

She handed him a small envelope.

“Isabella was given this when she was a baby. I kept it hidden until I knew I could trust you.”

Inside was a photograph of Elena holding newborn Isabella.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

If Dominic finds you, tell him the truth about the blue room.

Dominic looked at Sarah.

“What is the blue room?”

“I don't know.”

He closed his eyes.

The blue room.

He remembered it suddenly: a small nursery Elena had decorated at the back of the mansion. Pale blue walls, white curtains, a painted moon above the crib. He had assumed it was a guest room because Elena had refused to explain why she wanted it locked.

After her death, he had ordered the room sealed.

No one had entered it since.

Dominic returned to the mansion with Sarah under protection.

He went directly to the blue room.

The lock had not been changed in four years. He opened the door and stepped inside.

Dust covered the furniture. A small wooden crib stood beside the window, and a music mobile hung above it.

On the wall, Elena had painted a constellation of stars.

Dominic approached the crib.

Beneath the mattress lay a thin metal panel.

He lifted it.

Inside was a cassette recorder, a bundle of letters, and a small envelope bearing his name.

He pressed PLAY.

Elena's voice filled the room.

“Dominic, if you're hearing this, then the truth has finally reached you.”

She sounded tired, but calm.

“I need you to understand that I never wanted to hurt you. I was afraid. I made choices I regret, and I know you will have questions I cannot answer from beyond the grave.”

Dominic gripped the edge of the crib.

“Paul Whitaker was my doctor before I met you. When we separated, I went to him because I needed someone who understood what was happening to me. He used my fear and my loneliness to control me. Isabella was conceived during a period when I was vulnerable and unable to make clear decisions.”

Dominic's throat tightened.

Elena continued.

“I never loved him. I never wanted a life with him. When I discovered what he was doing through the foundation, I realized the man I had trusted was capable of destroying anyone who threatened him.”

A pause.

“Paul knew Isabella was his daughter. He believed that gave him a claim over her. He wanted to use her to control the Moretti family and secure access to the foundation's assets.”

Dominic closed his eyes.

“I tried to tell you. But every time I found the courage, I imagined the look on your face. I imagined you believing I had betrayed you because I never loved you.”

Her voice broke.

“I did love you, Dominic. I still do. But I was wrong to believe silence could protect us.”

The recording crackled.

“If you find Isabella, please don't make her pay for my mistakes. She is innocent. She deserves a life that isn't built on revenge.”

The tape ended.

Dominic stood motionless for a long time.

He had wanted a villain he could punish, a traitor he could expose, a simple explanation that would make Elena's death fit into a story he could understand.

Instead, he had found a woman who had loved him, feared him, and hidden the truth because she didn't believe he could survive it.

A knock came from the doorway.

Hannah stood there, her eyes red.

“Dominic?”

He turned.

She held a sheet of paper.

“Eleanor called. She found a record showing Paul Whitaker's death certificate was issued under a different name.”

Dominic took the paper.

The photograph attached to it showed a man with silver hair and a scar across his temple.

Michael Moretti.

But the name beneath the photograph was different.

DR. PAUL WHITAKER.

Dominic stared at the image.

His father hadn't merely pretended to die.

He had lived under the identity of the man who fathered Isabella.

The man Elena had feared.

The man who had become the Chairman.

And if the records were genuine, then Michael Moretti had spent years using his own son's family as cover for a crime that began with his wife's betrayal.

Dominic's phone rang again.

This time, it was Adrian.

His brother's voice was barely audible.

“Dominic, listen carefully. I've found Isabella.”

“Where?”

“She's with Richard Sterling.”

Dominic grabbed his coat.

“Send me the location.”

“I can't.”

“Why not?”

Adrian's breathing became ragged.

“Because I'm standing beside him.”

A gunshot exploded through the phone.

Then silence.

Dominic stared at the screen.

A message appeared seconds later.

Come alone if you want your brother and your daughter alive.

The location was an abandoned chapel on the outskirts of Chicago.

And the sender was Michael Moretti.
