Chapter 6

## THE SECRET INSIDE THE BUTTERFLY
By dawn, the Moretti estate had become a fortress.
Armed guards watched the gates. Every employee was questioned. Marco ordered a complete security audit while Luca sat beside Sophie in the breakfast room, studying the little butterfly embroidered on the collar of her dress.
His father's final words had left him with a question he couldn't answer.
What had Isabella hidden inside the butterfly?
"Sophie," he said gently, "do you remember when Mommy gave you something special before she disappeared?"
The little girl considered the question.
"She gave me her necklace."
"What did it look like?"
"A silver butterfly."
Luca's heart quickened.
"Where is it now?"
Sophie touched the small jewelry box beside her plate.
"I keep it under my pillow."
Emily, standing near the doorway, exchanged a glance with Luca.
He opened the box.
Inside lay a delicate silver necklace. Its wings were decorated with tiny blue stones.
The butterfly's body appeared slightly thicker than it should have been.
Luca examined the clasp and found a nearly invisible seam.
He called a jeweler he trusted, who arrived under armed escort. Using a precision tool, the man opened the butterfly's body.
A tiny memory card slid into his palm.
Luca stared at it.
"Can you read this?"
The jeweler nodded cautiously.
"With the right equipment."
Within an hour, Marco had transferred the files onto an isolated computer.
There were scanned financial records, photographs, shipping manifests, and a series of short videos.
The first video showed Isabella sitting in a dimly lit room.
She looked thinner than Luca remembered, with shadows beneath her eyes, but she was alive.
"Hello, my love," she said.
Luca stopped breathing.
"If you're watching this, I hope it means Sophie is safe. I hope it means you finally know the truth."
He reached for the desk to steady himself.
Isabella continued.
"I found the records your father kept. They prove that someone inside the organization has been selling children to people who pay to make them disappear. I couldn't trust the police because the operation had informants in several departments."
She paused, fighting tears.
"I wanted to come home. Every day, I wanted to come home. But they threatened Sophie, and I believed them."
Luca pressed his fingers against his mouth.
"I am sorry I left you with nothing but grief. I thought protecting you meant making you believe I was dead."
The video ended.
Luca sat motionless.
Then another file opened automatically.
It showed a hallway in the Moretti estate, recorded on the night Isabella disappeared.
Vanessa appeared on the screen, younger and visibly frightened.
She was speaking to a man whose face remained outside the camera's view.
"She knows about the shipments," Vanessa said. "She found the records."
The man answered, "Then the child becomes our leverage."
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. You promised Sophie would never be involved."
"Promises are for people who have power."
The recording ended.
Luca slowly turned toward Vanessa, who had been brought into the room under guard.
"How much did you know?"
She began crying.
"I knew about the records. I didn't know they were trafficking children until Isabella showed me the photographs."
"Who was the man?"
"I never saw his face."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I was told he was an investor. He financed your father's legitimate businesses. I thought if I helped Isabella escape, he would leave her alone."
"Instead, you helped everyone believe she was dead."
Vanessa lowered her head.
"I was terrified."
"So was my wife."
"I know."
Luca wanted to hate her. Part of him did. But another part understood that fear could make ordinary people participate in terrible things.
Understanding was not forgiveness.
"You're going to tell the authorities everything you know," he said.
Vanessa nodded.
Then Emily entered carrying a small tablet.
"Mr. Moretti, the last file just finished downloading."
Luca opened it.
The video showed Isabella standing in front of a white wall, holding a newspaper dated six weeks earlier.
Her face was pale.
"There's something else you need to know," she said. "The person who arranged my disappearance had access to Sophie's medical records, her school schedule, and the private security system. They knew every movement we made."
She leaned toward the camera.
"Luca, I don't believe this person is working alone."
The video flickered.
A second face appeared briefly in the reflection of a window.
A man standing behind the camera.
Luca enlarged the image.
His blood ran cold.
It was Marco Bellini.
His most trusted security chief.
The man who had protected Sophie since infancy.
The man currently guarding his daughter upstairs.
Luca snatched up his phone.
"Marco, answer me."
The call rang once.
Twice.
Then a child's voice came through the speaker.
"Daddy?"
Sophie.
Luca sprang to his feet.
"Princess, where's Marco?"
A pause.
May you like
Then Sophie whispered, "He's taking me to Mommy."
The line went dead.
