Chapter 9 - The Price of Seven Stolen Years

Vanessa Hart was arrested on a Tuesday morning.
The news broke before breakfast.
By eight, every major television network in New York was reporting that the daughter of billionaire financier Richard Hart had been taken into custody in connection with a long-running investigation into financial fraud, witness intimidation, and the disappearance of Isabella Ferrante.
By nine, Richard Hart's attorneys were denying everything.
By ten, Richard himself had vanished.
Luca watched the coverage from his library.
On the television, Vanessa emerged from a Manhattan apartment building between two federal agents.
Her hair was pulled into a loose ponytail.
She wore a simple beige coat.
Without diamonds, expensive makeup, or the confidence she'd always carried, she looked almost unrecognizable.
A reporter shouted:
“Miss Hart! Did you know Isabella Ferrante was alive?”
Vanessa kept walking.
“Did your father order her murder?”
No answer.
“Did you help conceal her daughter?”
Vanessa stopped.
For one second, she looked directly into the cameras.
Then she whispered:
“I never wanted anyone to die.”
Luca turned off the television.
He had heard enough.
Isabella stood in the doorway.
“Was that Vanessa?”
Luca nodded.
“She was arrested this morning.”
Isabella entered slowly.
“Did she know about me?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Luca hesitated.
“More than she admitted.”
Isabella looked toward the window.
“Did you love her?”
The question caught him off guard.
He stood.
“Bella—”
“Please answer.”
Luca took a breath.
“I cared about her.”
“That's not what I asked.”
He lowered his eyes.
“No.”
Isabella studied him.
“Then why were you going to marry her?”
He thought about the question.
For years, he'd convinced himself that marrying Vanessa was a practical decision.
She understood his world.
Their families were connected.
She never demanded emotional intimacy.
She didn't ask him to stop visiting Isabella's grave.
But none of those things were love.
“Because I was tired of being alone,” he admitted.
Isabella's expression softened slightly.
“And because everyone kept telling me it was time to move on.”
“Did you believe them?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Luca looked at her.
“Because I thought moving forward meant leaving you behind.”
She remained silent.
He continued.
“I didn't know how to live with the grief anymore.”
Isabella's eyes filled.
“And now?”
He stepped closer.
“Now I know grief wasn't the only thing I lost.”
“What else?”
“My chance to be Lily's father.”
Isabella shook her head.
“You haven't lost that.”
He looked at her.
“You've missed seven years,” she said. “You can't get them back.”
“I know.”
“But you can decide what you do with the next seven.”
Luca felt his throat tighten.
She reached for his hand.
And this time, she held it.
At noon, Luca met with federal investigators and his attorney.
Richard Hart had been located.
He was hiding at a private estate in Connecticut.
Authorities had obtained warrants connected to the financial conspiracy and the attempted killing of Isabella Ferrante.
Giovanni had entered a cooperation agreement.
Adrian Vale had provided medical records and testimony.
And Elena Marquez had finally been located.
Alive.
Living under another name in Vermont.
For seven years, Elena had moved between temporary jobs and small apartments, terrified that Richard's people would find her.
She had never married.
Never had children.
And never stopped wondering whether the pregnant woman she'd helped escape had survived.
When investigators told her Isabella was alive, Elena cried for nearly an hour.
She agreed to testify.
But she asked for one thing first.
She wanted to see Isabella.
Their reunion took place in a quiet conference room at a federal building.
Isabella entered with Luca beside her.
Elena stood near the window.
She was forty-one now.
Her dark hair was streaked with gray.
There were lines around her eyes that hadn't existed seven years earlier.
But Isabella recognized her immediately.
“Elena?”
The nurse covered her mouth.
“Isabella.”
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Isabella crossed the room.
They embraced.
Elena began sobbing.
“I thought they found you.”
Isabella held her tightly.
“I thought you were dead.”
Elena shook her head.
“I tried to come back.”
“Why didn't you?”
“They were watching everyone. Your old friends. The hospital. The foundation.”
Elena pulled away.
“I was afraid that if I contacted you, they'd find Lily.”
Isabella stared.
“You knew about Lily?”
Elena nodded.
“I knew you were pregnant. I helped arrange your transfer after we escaped.”
Her voice broke.
“I prayed every day that you both survived.”
Isabella took her hands.
“We did.”
Elena looked toward Luca.
Her expression became guarded.
“Mr. Ferrante.”
Luca approached.
“You saved my wife.”
Elena shook her head.
“I helped her escape. I couldn't give her back her life.”
“You gave her a chance to live.”
He swallowed.
“And you gave my daughter a chance to be born.”
Elena's eyes filled.
“I wish I'd done more.”
Luca shook his head.
“You did more than anyone.”
Later, Elena told investigators what had happened the night of the accident.
Richard Hart had arranged for Isabella's vehicle to be forced off the road.
The crash had been intended to kill her.
But she survived.
She was taken to a private medical facility controlled by Hart's associates.
Adrian Vale was ordered to keep her isolated.
When Elena discovered Isabella was pregnant, she secretly documented the medical records.
Then she learned that Richard intended to keep the baby alive while ensuring Isabella could never reclaim her identity.
Elena helped Isabella escape.
A trusted medical worker transferred Isabella to another facility under the name Anna Parker.
Margaret Collins later took responsibility for her care.
But Elena had been unable to retrieve all the evidence.
She returned to the hospital.
Richard's men discovered her.
She escaped only by abandoning her car and disappearing into another state.
“And the woman in the grave?” Luca asked.
Elena lowered her eyes.
“Her name was Maria Salazar.”
Luca went still.
“Who was she?”
“A patient at the hospital. She had no known relatives when she died.”
Elena's voice trembled.
“Richard used her death to create Isabella's burial records.”
Luca closed his eyes.
Maria Salazar.
A woman whose name had been erased so another woman could disappear.
Elena continued.
“Richard had the records changed several times. Elena Marquez was later added to the cemetery transfer paperwork, probably to discourage anyone who came looking for me.”
Luca looked at Daniel.
“Find Maria's family.”
Daniel nodded.
“We're already working on it.”
“And correct the grave.”
“Of course.”
Luca looked toward Isabella.
She was crying quietly.
He reached for her hand.
“We'll give Maria her name back.”
Three days later, Richard Hart was brought before a federal judge.
He denied every charge.
His attorneys argued that the recordings were incomplete, the financial records had been misinterpreted, and the witnesses were unreliable.
But the evidence continued growing.
Adrian Vale provided testimony.
Elena identified the people involved in the hospital transfer.
Giovanni admitted helping conceal the false death identification and financial misconduct.
Vanessa's attorneys began discussing a plea agreement.
And Richard's empire started collapsing.
Accounts were frozen.
Business partners withdrew.
The Ferrante Foundation's board was suspended pending an independent review.
Luca voluntarily provided investigators with access to the foundation's financial records and retained outside counsel to begin separating his legitimate companies from the family's criminal operations.
For the first time in his adult life, he was not trying to protect the Ferrante name.
He was trying to make sure nobody else suffered because of it.
That evening, Luca returned to the mansion.
He found Isabella sitting at the white piano.
Lily was beside her.
Together, they were playing The Little Star.
The melody filled the ballroom.
Luca stopped in the doorway.
Seven years earlier, he'd believed that song was the last beautiful thing Isabella had left behind.
Now it was bringing his family back together.
Lily spotted him.
“Daddy!”
Luca froze.
Isabella looked up.
The little girl scrambled off the bench and ran toward him.
“Daddy, come listen!”
He knelt.
“Sweetheart?”
Lily wrapped her arms around his neck.
“Mommy told me.”
Luca looked over her shoulder.
Isabella was crying.
Lily continued.
“She said you're my real daddy.”
Luca couldn't speak.
The little girl pulled back.
“Is that true?”
He nodded.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
“Were you lost?”
The question broke him.
He laughed through his tears.
“I suppose I was.”
Lily touched his cheek.
“It's okay.”
She smiled.
“Mommy says when people get lost, they should find the music.”
Luca gathered her into his arms.
For the first time in seven years, he felt something he'd almost forgotten.
Peace.
Then his phone rang.
Daniel.
Luca answered with one arm still around Lily.
“Daniel?”
His attorney sounded tense.
“Richard Hart has agreed to provide additional information.”
“About what?”
“The night Isabella disappeared.”
“We already know what happened.”
“No,” Daniel said.
“Apparently, we don't.”
Luca straightened.
“What do you mean?”
Daniel took a breath.
“Richard says the original order didn't come from him.”
Luca felt his blood turn cold.
“Then who gave it?”
A long silence followed.
May you like
Then Daniel said:
“He claims your father was alive when the plan was made.”
