Chapter 9 - THE HOUSE THAT NEVER FORGOT

Sebastian refused to go alone.

He also refused to let Lily's photograph turn into another excuse for Dominic to control the family.

He contacted the state police, handed over the threatening message, and arranged a coordinated rescue with investigators who had already reviewed the recording from the library.

The lake house stood beyond a narrow road bordered by pine trees. Most of the windows were boarded, and the roof sagged above the eastern wing where the original fire had started.

Sebastian remembered the night in fragments.

His mother shouting his name.

His father carrying him outside.

Smoke pouring through the hallway.

A paramedic telling him that his mother had been taken to a hospital.

Then twelve years of silence.

Clara walked beside him, using a temporary brace and a borrowed cane.

"You don't have to go inside," Sebastian said.

"Neither do you."

He looked at her.

"I'm the reason this family is still dangerous."

"No. You're the person who finally stopped pretending it wasn't."

The words steadied him.

Police officers moved around the property, checking the perimeter. Marcus found a rear entrance with fresh footprints in the mud.

The team entered.

Inside, the house smelled of wet plaster and burned wood. Old furniture stood beneath dusty sheets. A photograph of Elena and Antonio lay broken near the staircase.

From the basement came a faint voice.

"Help!"

Sebastian ran down the stairs.

Lily sat in a chair with her wrists bound, her face pale but uninjured. A man stood behind her holding a knife.

Sebastian stopped.

"Let her go."

The man pulled Lily closer.

"Put your weapon down."

Sebastian lowered his hands.

Lily stared at him with frightened eyes.

"Who are you?"

"My name is Sebastian Romano."

Her expression changed.

"You're the man who owns the security company."

"Part of it."

"The man who hurt my mother?"

Sebastian froze.

"What?"

The captor laughed.

"Tell her, Sebastian. Tell her what your family did."

A second figure emerged from the shadows.

Dominic.

He looked exhausted, but his smile remained.

"Lily has spent her whole life believing Margaret Grant rescued her from a dangerous family. She deserves to know the truth."

"Then tell it," Sebastian said.

Dominic gestured toward Lily.

"Her adoptive mother was paid to take her away. Elena wanted to keep her daughter, but Antonio believed the child would become a target. He arranged the adoption."

"That's not true," Sebastian said.

"Isn't it? Ask your father."

Lily began to cry.

"Stop lying!"

Dominic's expression softened.

"Your real mother is alive. She wants you back. But the Romano family destroys everyone it loves."

He raised a folder.

Inside were copies of the old adoption records, bank transfers, and a letter bearing Antonio's signature.

Sebastian knew some of the documents were genuine.

His father had helped conceal Lily's identity. Even if he believed he was protecting her, the decision had stolen her childhood and denied her the truth.

"I won't defend what he did," Sebastian said. "But I won't let Dominic use it to hurt you."

Dominic's smile disappeared.

"Then you'll make the same mistake he made."

He nodded to the man holding Lily.

The man raised his knife.

A gunshot rang out.

The captor collapsed, his weapon falling to the floor. Police officers flooded the basement.

Dominic ran toward a side passage.

Marcus pursued him.

Sebastian reached Lily and cut her restraints.

She backed away immediately.

"Don't touch me."

He stopped.

"Okay."

"Is my mother really alive?"

"Yes."

"Does she want me?"

Sebastian swallowed.

"She has spent twelve years trying to find you."

Lily stared at him, searching his face for the lie.

Then she began to sob.

Clara knelt several feet away.

"You don't have to decide anything tonight," she told Lily. "You can ask questions. You can be angry. You can take as much time as you need."

Lily looked at her.

"Who are you?"

"Someone who knows that being afraid doesn't mean you're weak."

A few minutes later, Elena arrived with the officers.

She stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

Lily looked up.

For a long moment, neither moved.

Then Elena whispered, "My baby."

Lily stepped forward.

Elena opened her arms, but she didn't force the embrace.

Lily crossed the room and held her mother.

Sebastian turned away, unable to hide his tears.

For the first time in twelve years, the family was together.

Then Marcus appeared at the basement door, his expression grave.

"Boss, Dominic escaped through a service tunnel. We found his car abandoned on the north road."

"Did he leave anything behind?"

Marcus handed him a small envelope.

Inside was a photograph of Sebastian as a child, standing between his parents.

On the back, someone had written a message in fresh ink.

Dominic was never the one who ordered the fire.

Sebastian read it twice.

Then he noticed the signature.

May you like

It was his father's.
