Chapter 1 - The Day I Ended My Marriage

"The day my husband publicly announced his love for his childhood sweetheart, I was standing in his family’s kitchen, cooking dinner for his father’s sixtieth birthday. He had blocked me from seeing the post, but everyone else knew—including the relatives I had spent years trying to please. When he finally walked into the party holding her hand and accused me of embarrassing him, I slapped him in front of the entire room and ended our marriage.
My name is Claire Bennett Moretti, and for seven years, I had been married to Alexander Moretti, one of Chicago’s most powerful Mafia bosses.
Before him, I had been ambitious, confident, and one of the strongest students in my university’s business program.
Then I fell in love.
I gave Alexander my loyalty, my trust, and eventually so much of myself that I stopped noticing how much I had disappeared.
That afternoon, I was preparing his father’s birthday dinner at the Moretti estate. My hair was messy, my shirt smelled like cooking oil, and I had spent hours making sure everything was perfect.
Then my best friend Emma called.
“Claire, have you seen Alexander’s Instagram?”
I opened his profile.
Nothing.
Then Emma sent me a screenshot.
My stomach dropped.
Alexander was holding Sophia Reynolds’s hand.
Sophia.
His childhood sweetheart.
The woman he had spent years telling me was “just a friend.”
Under the photo were five words.
“Finally, we can be together.”
I stared at the comments.
Congratulations.
Heart emojis.
People wishing them happiness.
People who had attended my wedding.
People who knew I was his wife.
And none of them mentioned me.
That was when I realized Alexander had blocked only me.
Everyone else had been allowed to watch my humiliation.
I typed one sentence.
I want a divorce.
Then I removed my apron and picked up my bag.
Before I could leave, my mother-in-law appeared.
“Claire! Where are you going? Dinner isn’t finished.”
“Ask your future daughter-in-law to finish it.”
Her face tightened.
“Please. Today is important. We can deal with Alexander later.”
I looked at her.
“You already knew, didn’t you?”
She avoided my eyes.
That was enough.
Everyone had known.
They had watched me cook while my husband publicly celebrated another woman.
I walked into the living room, and conversations died instantly.
Then the front door opened.
Alexander stepped inside.
Sophia was beside him.
They were holding hands.
I looked at my stained shirt, my tired hands, and then at the two of them dressed like a perfect couple.
“Move,” I said.
Alexander frowned.
“What are you making a scene about now?”
I stared at him.
“Did you read my message?”
“Of course.”
“And?”
He looked annoyed.
“Are we seriously doing this here?”
I almost laughed.
“You announced your relationship with another woman publicly.”
“Claire, lower your voice.”
“You blocked me so I wouldn’t see it.”
His expression hardened.
“Enough.”
Something inside me finally snapped.
I raised my hand.
SLAP.
The sound cracked across the room.
No one moved.
Alexander slowly turned his face back toward me.
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“Alexander Moretti, I am divorcing you.”
Gasps spread through the room.
“Our marriage is over.”
He grabbed my wrist.
“Do you have any idea what day it is? You’re humiliating me in front of my entire family.”
I laughed bitterly.
“So now you understand humiliation?”
His grip loosened.
“You held another woman’s hand. You told the world you could finally be together. You let your family watch me work in that kitchen while they all knew.”
I pulled my wrist free.
“You cared about your reputation.”
My voice shook.
“But you never cared about mine.”
Then I picked up my bag and walked toward the door.
Behind me, Alexander shouted my name.
I stopped once.
Turned.
And looked at the man I had spent seven years loving.
“Listen carefully, Alexander.”
The entire room went silent.
“Starting today, I’m done protecting you from the consequences of what you’ve done.”
Then I walked out.
And the door closed behind me.
The story is too long to post in the caption, so just say you ""Yes"". The full story will be in the comments below.👇👇
"# Chapter 2: The Wife Who Had Nothing to Lose
The November wind hit my face the moment I stepped outside the Moretti estate.
For seven years, I had entered that house through its front doors as Alexander Moretti's wife. I had stood beside him at charity galas, family dinners, political fundraisers, and funerals where men twice my age lowered their heads when he walked past.
Now I was leaving with a handbag, a phone, and no idea where I would sleep that night.
My phone vibrated.
Alexander.
I ignored the first call.
Then the second.
By the fifth, I switched it off.
I had barely reached the end of the driveway when a black SUV pulled beside me. The passenger window lowered, revealing Marco DeLuca, Alexander's head of security.
"Mrs. Moretti, get in."
"Don't call me that."
Marco hesitated. He had worked for Alexander longer than I had known him. He was one of the few people in that house who had never treated me like an inconvenience.
"Claire, please. It's freezing."
"I'm fine."
"Mr. Moretti wants you back inside."
I gave a humorless laugh.
"Then he can learn what it feels like when someone doesn't do what he wants."
Marco looked toward the mansion.
"There's something you should know."
I stopped walking.
"What?"
"Your husband has ordered everyone not to discuss what happened tonight. He's furious."
"That sounds like his problem."
Marco lowered his voice.
"Miss Reynolds isn't the only reason."
Before I could ask what he meant, another vehicle came racing down the driveway.
Alexander's black Mercedes.
He stepped out before the car had completely stopped.
"Claire!"
His voice carried across the grounds.
I turned.
His cheek was still slightly red.
For one brief second, I felt the old instinct to apologize. To explain. To make things easier for him.
Then I remembered the photograph.
Sophia's hand in his.
His caption.
The hundreds of congratulations.
I let the instinct die.
"Get in the car," he ordered.
"No."
His eyes narrowed.
"Don't test me."
"You've spent seven years testing me, Alexander. I'm finished."
He approached, stopping just inches away.
"You're emotional. We can discuss this privately."
"Privately? Like the relationship you've been conducting privately while announcing it publicly?"
His jaw tightened.
"There's more to this than you understand."
"Then explain it."
He glanced at Marco.
"Leave us."
Marco remained still.
Alexander's expression darkened.
"Now."
The security chief reluctantly stepped away.
Alexander lowered his voice.
"Sophia is going through a difficult period. Her family has been under pressure. I made that announcement to protect her."
I stared at him.
"By telling everyone you love her?"
"It's complicated."
"No. Complicated is a business merger. This is betrayal."
He rubbed his forehead.
"You know what my life is like. There are people watching every move I make. Sometimes I have to make decisions you won't understand."
I almost smiled.
There it was.
The excuse he had used for everything.
His business.
His enemies.
His responsibilities.
His family.
And somehow, I had always been expected to understand while he never made an effort to understand me.
"Where am I supposed to sleep tonight?" I asked.
He looked genuinely surprised.
"What?"
"I don't have a house anymore. I don't have a car. My bank cards are connected to accounts you control. You made sure I had everything except independence."
His expression shifted.
"You're my wife."
"Not anymore."
I turned away.
He caught my elbow.
"Claire, don't make a decision you'll regret."
I looked down at his hand.
"Let go."
He did.
I called Emma using Marco's phone because mine was still switched off.
She answered immediately.
"Claire?"
"I'm outside the estate. Can you pick me up?"
"Where are you?"
"Please, Emma."
"I'm coming."
Twenty minutes later, Emma's battered blue sedan pulled up. She jumped out and wrapped her arms around me.
She didn't ask questions.
She simply held me.
When we drove away, I saw Alexander standing beneath the mansion's entrance lights.
He wasn't following us.
He was watching.
And for the first time in seven years, I didn't look back.
At Emma's apartment, I finally turned my phone on.
There were thirty-seven missed calls.
Twenty-three from Alexander.
Nine from unknown numbers.
Five from his mother.
Then a message appeared from an unfamiliar number.
You should have stayed at the estate, Claire. Your husband isn't the only person who wants you gone.
I read it twice.
Emma leaned over my shoulder.
"Who sent that?"
"I don't know."
Another message arrived.
Ask Alexander what happened to the woman who owned the blue wedding ring before you.
My blood went cold.
I had never heard of another woman.
And I had certainly never heard of a blue wedding ring.
But when I opened the photograph from our wedding day, something caught my attention.
Alexander wasn't looking at me.
He was looking at the ring on my finger.
As though he recognized it.
As though he was afraid of it.
May you like
And suddenly, I wondered whether my marriage had been built on a secret far darker than an affair.
