Chapter 10 - THE LAST MORETTI

At 11:43 p.m., Dante Moretti drove toward the warehouse with his headlights off.

Marcus followed two blocks behind with a team of trusted men. Luca had taken a separate route, carrying copies of the documents that could expose Richard's role in the conspiracy.

Dante had refused to bring Isabella.

Instead, he had sent the child with Mrs. Alvarez to a safe location outside the city, accompanied by two guards who had never worked for the Moretti organization.

He had also arranged for the evidence against Richard to be delivered to a federal investigator who had spent years trying to dismantle the family's criminal network.

If Dante didn't return, the documents would become public.

His father would lose the protection he had spent decades buying.

The warehouse emerged from the darkness.

It had been rebuilt after the original structure was demolished, but the concrete foundation remained. New steel beams rose above the old ground, and rainwater gathered in the cracks between the loading bays.

Dante stepped inside.

A single light burned at the far end of the building.

His father stood beneath it.

Giovanni Moretti looked older than the photographs suggested. His hair had turned white, and he walked with a cane, but his eyes were sharp and merciless.

For a moment, Dante was sixteen again.

Then he remembered Elena's face when she had asked why another woman knew his life better than she did.

He remembered Isabella laughing over burned pancakes.

He remembered Luca's bruised mouth after their reunion.

And he stopped being afraid of the man who had raised him.

"You look terrible," Dante said.

Giovanni smiled.

"You look like your mother."

"Don't."

"Still sentimental. She always said that was your greatest weakness."

Dante raised his weapon.

"Where is Elena?"

"Safe."

"Where?"

"Somewhere you can't reach her."

Dante's finger tightened around the trigger.

Giovanni lifted one hand.

"Don't be foolish. If you shoot me, you may never find her."

"Then start talking."

Giovanni leaned on his cane.

"You have spent years believing I destroyed your family. But I built everything you have. Your empire, your reputation, your power. Without me, you would be another dead man in a forgotten alley."

"I'd rather be that man than become you."

For the first time, Giovanni's smile disappeared.

"Your mother said the same thing."

Dante's heart hammered.

"Where is she?"

"Your brother knows."

"Then why bring me here?"

"Because Luca has always been the weak one. He believes love can undo what blood has created."

Giovanni stepped closer.

"Give me the medical records. Give me the child. And I will let your wife go."

Dante stared at him.

"You want my daughter."

"I want what she represents."

"She's a little girl."

"She is the future of this family."

"No," Dante said. "She is the future of a family that will never belong to you."

Giovanni struck the floor with his cane.

"You think you can walk away? You think you can raise a child without the protection of the Moretti name? There are men who would tear you apart before breakfast."

"Then I'll make sure they never get near her."

Giovanni's expression darkened.

"You sound like your mother."

"And you sound like a man who's running out of time."

A slow clap echoed from the shadows.

Richard Moretti stepped into the light.

He held a gun in one hand and a folder in the other.

"Beautiful speech, Dante. Your mother would be proud."

Dante turned slightly.

"Where is Elena?"

Richard smiled.

"You're still asking the wrong question."

He opened the folder.

Inside were medical records, photographs, and documents bearing Dante's signature.

"Your wife has been under observation for months. Every appointment, every test, every movement. You thought Victoria was the problem, but she was only one small part of a much larger arrangement."

Dante felt cold rage settle over him.

"You used her."

"I used everyone."

Richard glanced at Giovanni.

"Your father wanted the child because of her genetic profile. I wanted the records because they were worth a fortune to the right buyers. Victoria wanted power. Sofia wanted revenge. And Luca wanted to play the hero."

He shrugged.

"Everyone had a price."

Dante took one step forward.

"You don't know what family means."

Richard laughed.

"Family is the only reason I survived this long."

A shot rang out.

Richard staggered, dropping the folder.

Luca emerged from the darkness, holding a pistol.

"Then you should have chosen a better family."

Richard fired back.

Luca fell behind a steel support beam.

Dante returned fire, forcing Richard to retreat toward the loading bay. Giovanni tried to escape through a side door, but Marcus and his men entered from the opposite corridor.

Within seconds, the warehouse filled with shouting, running footsteps, and the metallic echoes of gunfire.

Dante reached Luca.

Blood spread across his brother's shirt.

"Stay with me."

Luca managed a weak smile.

"You always did give terrible orders."

Dante pressed a hand against the wound.

"You're not dying again."

"Again?"

Luca coughed.

"That's optimistic."

Marcus appeared beside them.

"The ambulance is coming."

Dante looked toward the loading bay.

Richard was gone.

Giovanni had been arrested.

And Elena was still missing.

Then Dante's phone rang.

He answered.

"Elena?"

Her voice came through, breathless but clear.

"Dante, listen to me. I'm at the clinic. I think the baby is coming."

He felt the entire world narrow to that one sentence.

"I'm coming."

"No. You need to hear me first."

He stopped.

"What is it?"

"I found something in the medical records. Something about the baby."

Dante's stomach tightened.

"Elena, don't worry about the records. Just stay with the doctors."

"I have to tell you."

Her voice broke.

"The genetic marker isn't from your mother."

Silence.

"What?"

"It belongs to someone else in your family. Someone whose records were deliberately altered."

Dante looked at Giovanni, who was being escorted past the loading bay in handcuffs.

"Who?"

Elena took a shaky breath.

"The test identifies the biological father of the genetic line as Giovanni Moretti."

Dante stared at his father.

"That's impossible."

"There's more," Elena whispered. "The laboratory found a second match. Someone who shares the same rare marker but was never listed as a member of the Moretti family."

A door opened on her end.

Someone spoke to her.

Then she returned to the phone.

"Dante, the doctors are taking me in. I love you."

"I love you too."

The call ended.

Dante stood motionless as the ambulance sirens grew louder outside.

He had come to the warehouse expecting to confront a monster.

Instead, he had discovered that the man who raised him had been hiding an entire branch of their family.

And somewhere, another person carried the same genetic secret.

Three hours later, Dante arrived at the clinic.

Elena had delivered a healthy baby girl.

Their daughter lay against her mother's chest, wrapped in a white blanket, her tiny fingers curled around Elena's thumb.

Dante approached the bed slowly.

He had faced gunmen, betrayals, and the return of the dead.

Nothing had prepared him for the sight of his child.

Elena looked up.

"She's beautiful."

Dante nodded, unable to speak.

He touched the baby's hand.

Her fingers closed around his.

For the first time in his life, the future felt more powerful than the past.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

Elena studied him.

"I know."

"I'm going to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to wonder whether you're alone again."

She held his gaze.

"Then start by telling me the truth, even when it scares you."

"I will."

"And stop making decisions for me."

A faint smile crossed his face.

"I'll try."

"That's a better answer."

She leaned toward him, and he kissed her forehead.

Their daughter made a tiny sound between them.

Dante laughed through his tears.

Outside the room, Luca was recovering from surgery. Isabella had been brought to the clinic and was waiting with Mrs. Alvarez. Giovanni was in federal custody, and Richard remained missing.

For the first time in years, the Moretti family had a chance to become something other than a weapon pointed at itself.

Dante knew the road ahead would be difficult.

There would be investigations, confessions, and consequences. He would have to answer for the empire he had built and decide what kind of man he wanted his children to remember.

But he no longer intended to hide behind the excuse that he was protecting them.

He would tell the truth.

He would face what came next.

And he would choose his family every time.

***

Six weeks later, the house in Lake Geneva was filled with laughter.

Isabella sat beside the fireplace, teaching her baby sister how to hold a stuffed rabbit. Elena watched from the sofa while Dante attempted to assemble a crib without consulting the instructions.

"You run half of Chicago," Elena remarked, "but you can't follow a diagram."

Dante held up a wooden panel.

"The diagram is wrong."

"The diagram is upside down."

He examined it.

Then he looked at her.

"I knew that."

Elena laughed.

It was a sound he had missed more than he could explain.

For the first time since their marriage began, the house felt like a home rather than a fortress.

Then the doorbell rang.

Marcus entered with a small package.

"No return address," he said. "It was delivered to the front gate."

Dante's smile faded.

He opened the package carefully.

Inside was an old photograph.

His mother stood in a garden beside a young woman Dante had never seen before. The woman was holding a newborn baby.

On the back, a message had been written in unfamiliar handwriting.

YOUR FATHER DIDN'T CREATE THE SECRET. HE INHERITED IT. ASK YOUR MOTHER WHO THE FIRST MORETTI REALLY WAS.

Dante stared at the photograph.

Beneath the message was a date.

Forty years before his birth.

And a name.

LUCA MORETTI.

Not his brother.

His grandfather.

Dante looked toward the stairs, where Elena was holding their daughter.

For the first time since his father's arrest, the past had found a new way into their home.

He folded the photograph and placed it in his pocket.

Whatever the truth was, he would face it with Elena beside him.

But somewhere beyond Chicago, someone knew the secret of the first Moretti.

And they had just made it clear that the story of his family was far from over.
