Chapter 8 - The Recording That Changed Everything

Isabella led them into the old treatment room.
She opened a cabinet and removed a small metal box.
Inside was a cassette recorder, three photographs, and a sealed letter.
“My mother gave this to Margaret,” she explained. “She told her never to let Vincent find it.”
Antonio picked up the letter.
His hands trembled as he recognized Elena's handwriting.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Vincent told me you were the one who ordered the explosion.”
Antonio stared at her.
“What?”
“He said you wanted to eliminate Luca and take control of the family. He said I was being hidden because you were dangerous.”
Luca looked at the cassette recorder.
“What's on it?”
Isabella pressed play.
Static filled the room.
Then Elena's voice emerged.
“If you're hearing this, it means Vincent has finally found the files.”
Antonio covered his mouth.
His wife's voice sounded as if she were standing beside him.
The recording continued.
“Antonio, I know you believe our daughter is dead. She isn't. I arranged her transfer because someone inside our family was planning to use her against us.”
A pause.
Then another voice.
Vincent.
“You should have handed over the records, Elena.”
Elena answered.
“I will never let you destroy my children.”
The recording crackled.
Vincent's voice became colder.
“Then you'll lose them.”
A loud crash followed.
Then a gunshot.
The recording stopped.
Antonio sank into a chair.
Luca stared at the recorder.
“That's enough to prove he threatened her.”
Robert's earlier words echoed in his mind.
The original files.
The financial records.
The medical documents.
But Isabella shook her head.
“There is another recording.”
She reached into the metal box and removed a smaller device.
“This one was recorded the night of the explosion.”
Luca pressed the button.
A familiar voice filled the room.
His father's.
“If anything happens to me, Luca must never know who his mother really was.”
Luca froze.
Antonio looked at him.
The recording continued.
“And Isabella must never be told that she wasn't the only child I had.”
Silence.
Luca slowly turned toward his father.
“What does that mean?”
Antonio looked devastated.
“Luca, listen to me.”
The recording played on.
A woman spoke.
Her voice was unfamiliar.
“You promised you would protect him.”
Antonio answered.
“I did.”
“Then why did you let them tell him Elena was his mother?”
Luca felt his stomach tighten.
“What?”
Antonio reached for the recorder.
Luca pulled it away.
“Don't.”
The woman continued.
“If Vincent discovers the truth, he'll use it against both of them.”
The recording ended.
Luca stared at Antonio.
“Was Elena not my mother?”
Antonio lowered his head.
“Biologically, no.”
The words hit harder than any gunshot.
“Who was?”
Antonio's eyes filled.
“Your mother was a woman named Catherine Bell.”
Luca stepped backward.
“You let me grow up believing another woman gave birth to me?”
“Because Catherine died protecting you.”
“Who killed her?”
Antonio looked toward the door.
Vincent was still standing in the corridor.
His face had gone pale.
Luca noticed.
“Uncle?”
Vincent forced a smile.
“Your father is lying.”
Antonio shook his head.
“Catherine was your mother, and Vincent knew her.”
Luca turned slowly.
Vincent's expression changed.
For the first time, the older man looked genuinely frightened.
Antonio continued.
“Catherine was Vincent's wife.”
Luca couldn't move.
His uncle had been married to his biological mother.
The man who had raised him as a nephew had known the truth from the beginning.
Vincent raised his weapon.
“Enough.”
But before he could fire, the lights went out.
A gunshot rang through the corridor.
Someone screamed.
When the emergency lights flickered on, Isabella was gone.

So was the cassette.
And Vincent was lying on the floor, bleeding.
