Chapter 10 - The Promise Beneath the Old Tree

Dominic reached the estate in eleven minutes.

The house was in chaos. Guards searched the grounds while Marco coordinated with local authorities. Lily's phone had been found near the garden gate, but there was no sign of Ethan.

Dominic stood beneath the old tree where Isabella had once parked her car.

For the first time in his life, he felt completely powerless.

Then he noticed something tied to a low branch.

A strip of blue fabric.

Ethan's favorite blanket had been blue.

Dominic followed the trail to the maintenance shed, where he found a second note.

Come alone. Bring the original recording.

There was no signature.

Dominic knew it was a trap, but he also knew that whoever had taken Ethan expected him to come.

He placed a copy of the recovered footage on a flash drive and left the estate with Marco following at a distance.

The location was an abandoned lakeside property once owned by the Sterling family.

Inside, Dominic found Lily bound to a chair. She was frightened but conscious.

“Where's Ethan?”

“Upstairs,” she whispered. “Victor took him. Vanessa said they only needed the recording.”

Dominic freed her.

“Can you get outside?”

She nodded.

“Go to Marco. Tell him to wait for my signal.”

Lily hesitated.

“Mr. Moretti, Ethan told me something before they took him.”

“What?”

“He said he knew where his mother hid the real recording.”

Dominic looked toward the staircase.

“Where?”

“He said, ‘Where Mommy kept the stars.’”

The phrase struck him with sudden force.

Isabella had a small observatory at the estate, a glass room where she and Ethan used to look at the night sky. She had called the stars their secret friends.

Dominic realized the original recording might still be there.

But first, he had to get his son back.

He climbed the stairs and entered a bedroom.

Ethan sat on the edge of a bed. Victor stood behind him, holding a phone. Vanessa was near the window, her face drawn and exhausted.

“Daddy!” Ethan cried.

Dominic stepped forward.

Victor raised a gun.

“Don't move.”

Dominic stopped.

“Let him go.”

Victor laughed.

“You think this is about a six-year-old boy? This is about what Isabella stole from us.”

“You killed her.”

Victor's expression hardened.

“I didn't plan for her to die. She refused to stop the car. She tried to escape.”

Vanessa turned toward him.

“You said the crash was an accident.”

“It was an accident.”

“You chased her!”

“And you told me to get the evidence!”

Dominic watched them turn on each other.

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“I wanted the documents. I wanted the money. I never wanted her dead.”

“You arranged the cover-up,” Dominic said.

Vanessa looked at him.

“I thought if Ethan went away, everything would stop. I thought I could finally have the life I wanted.”

“You wanted a husband who wouldn't ask questions and a fortune you didn't earn.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I know.”

It was the first honest thing she had said.

Victor shoved Ethan forward.

“Enough. Give me the recording.”

Dominic held up the flash drive.

“Let my son walk to me.”

Victor hesitated.

Then Ethan did something no one expected.

He looked at Victor and spoke clearly.

“You were the man who hurt Mommy.”

Victor's face changed.

Ethan continued, his voice trembling but steady.

“I remember your red mark. Mommy told me to hide. You told her Daddy would never find out.”

Victor grabbed the boy's shoulder.

“Shut up!”

Dominic lunged.

A struggle erupted. The gun hit the floor and skidded beneath the bed. Victor struck Dominic across the face, but Dominic drove him into the wall.

Marco and two officers rushed in moments later.

Victor was arrested before he could reach the gun.

Vanessa sank to the floor, sobbing.

Dominic gathered Ethan into his arms.

“Are you hurt?”

Ethan shook his head.

“I was scared.”

“I know, buddy. I'm here.”

“Are you going to leave me?”

Dominic pulled back and looked directly into his son's eyes.

“Never. No matter what happens, I will always come back for you.”

Ethan clung to him.

“Promise like Mommy promised?”

Dominic's voice broke.

“Exactly like Mommy promised.”

In the days that followed, the investigation finally moved forward.

Victor was charged in connection with Isabella's death, the financial conspiracy, and the kidnapping. Adrian agreed to testify about the cover-up. Vanessa was charged with fraud and conspiracy after investigators recovered the forged trust documents and her communications with Victor.

Anthony's confession helped establish how the original investigation had been obstructed.

Dominic did not celebrate the arrests.

He visited Isabella's grave with Ethan and Lily. For the first time in three years, he told his son the truth he could safely explain: his mother had been brave, she had tried to protect him, and none of what happened was his fault.

Ethan placed a small drawing beside the flowers.

It showed three figures holding hands beneath a tree.

His mother stood in the middle.

Dominic knelt beside him.

“Do you think Mommy can see us?”

Ethan looked up at the sky.

“I think she knows we found each other.”

Dominic held him close.

For the first time since Isabella's death, the house began to feel like a home again.

He reopened the west wing, allowed sunlight into Isabella's room, and placed her favorite photograph in the hallway where Ethan could see it every morning.

Lily remained with the family, no longer simply a maid but someone Ethan trusted as part of his small, wounded world.

One evening, Dominic sat with his son beneath the observatory's glass ceiling.

Ethan pointed toward a bright star.

“That one looks like Mommy.”

Dominic smiled sadly.

“Then we'll call it hers.”

They watched the sky in silence until Ethan fell asleep against his shoulder.

Dominic carried him upstairs and tucked him into bed.

On the nightstand, beside Isabella's photograph, lay the small silver key recovered from the safe-deposit box.

Dominic had promised himself he would never let another secret endanger his son.

But the following morning, Daniel arrived with a sealed envelope from the state investigator.

It contained a final report on the clinic records.

Most of the evidence against Victor had been authenticated.

One file, however, had been recovered from the encrypted drive only hours earlier.

It was dated the night Ethan was born.

The file contained a scanned document and a short audio recording.

Dominic opened the document first.

It was a second birth record.

The mother's name had been blacked out in the copy, but the hospital identification number was visible.

The same number appeared on the bracelet hidden in Isabella's room.

Dominic felt the room go cold.

He played the audio.

Isabella's voice came through the speaker, faint but unmistakable.

“If Dominic ever finds this, tell him I did what I had to do to protect both children.”

A second voice answered.

Grace Miller.

“Are you certain he doesn't know?”

Isabella whispered:

“He can never know until it's safe.”

The recording ended.

Dominic stared at the screen.

Both children.

He had spent years believing that every secret connected to Isabella had finally been uncovered.

Now he understood that she had hidden one last truth from him—one that might change everything he knew about his family.

His phone rang.

An unknown number.

Dominic answered.

A woman's voice spoke softly.

“Mr. Moretti? My name is Sophie. I believe you knew my mother.”

Dominic couldn't speak.

The woman continued.

“She told me that if anything happened to her, I should contact you when I was old enough.”

A pause.

“I'm calling because I found a letter with your wife's name on it.”

Dominic looked toward the hallway, where Ethan's laughter drifted from the kitchen.

“Who is your mother?” he asked.

The woman took a shaky breath.

Then she said a name that made the world stop.

And Dominic realized the story of Isabella's death might have been only the beginning.

THE END OF BOOK ONE.
