Chapter 10 - THE FAMILY THAT SURVIVED

Dominic couldn't move.
The man standing in the doorway looked like a reflection from an old photograph brought to life.
“Who are you?” Dominic demanded.
The stranger stepped into the light.
“My name is Daniel.”
Matteo's face twisted with fury.
“You weren't supposed to come here.”
Daniel ignored him.
“Eleanor gave birth to three boys. Our father believed the third child had died. Adrian Vale arranged the transfer and falsified the records. I grew up under another name, moving between families who were told I had no surviving relatives.”
Dominic stared at him.
“Why didn't you come looking for us?”
“I did. But every time I got close, someone changed the records or threatened the people helping me.”
“Who?”
Daniel looked at Matteo.
“Your brother knew more than he admitted.”
Matteo rose from the desk.
“You were the one who disappeared!”
“I was a child.”
“You were the reason Father changed the trust!”
Dominic turned sharply.
“What trust?”
Daniel took a folder from his coat and placed it on the desk.
Their father had discovered the illegal transfer years earlier. He had begun gathering evidence against the people involved, intending to expose them and restore the inheritance rights of all his children.
But before he could act, the records disappeared.
Then he died.
Dominic looked from the documents to Matteo.
“You knew Daniel was alive.”
Matteo's silence answered him.
“You knew about the twins, too,” Dominic continued. “You used Lucas and Grace to control me, while you searched for our brother.”
Matteo's face hardened.
“I was trying to secure what belonged to me.”
“You kidnapped children.”
“I protected the family!”
“No,” Dominic said. “You protected your own greed.”
Matteo drew a gun from his jacket.
Dominic raised his hands.
“Don't do this.”
“You always got everything. Father's respect. The company. Isabella. Now you get the children, too.”
Matteo's hand trembled.
“You don't deserve any of it.”
Dominic looked directly at him.
“Maybe I don't deserve everything I've been given. But those children deserve a chance to grow up without fear.”
Matteo's expression broke for a fraction of a second.
Then he aimed.
A sharp voice rang out from the doorway.
“Drop it!”
Anthony and the police entered the room.
Matteo spun toward them, but there was nowhere to run.
He dropped the gun.
The officers restrained him and led him away.
As he passed Dominic, he leaned close.
“You think this ends with me?”
Dominic didn't answer.
Matteo smiled.
“You have no idea what Father was really hiding.”
Then he was gone.
The following months brought a long investigation, several arrests, and the recovery of financial records that had been hidden for years. Adrian Vale was arrested after attempting to flee the country. Vanessa agreed to testify about the forged records and the abduction of Lucas, though her cooperation did not erase her role in the crimes.
Dominic surrendered the illegal holdings he had inherited and began restructuring the family business. He dismissed the men who had participated in the cover-up and worked with investigators to expose the remaining network.
He knew one decision could not undo years of violence.
But he could decide what kind of man he would be from that point forward.
Isabella moved back into the mansion only after she had chosen to do so freely. At first, she insisted on keeping her own room. Dominic accepted her boundaries without argument.
They began with breakfast together.
Then walks with the children.
Then long conversations that sometimes ended in tears.
He never asked her to forget what had happened.
He only asked for the chance to earn her trust again.
One afternoon, Lucas and Grace helped Emily prepare a small celebration for the birth of her baby boy.
The child arrived healthy, several weeks after the night at the warehouse.
Emily named him Noah.
Dominic visited her at the hospital with a bouquet of white flowers and a gift for the baby.
“I owe you more than I can say,” he told her.
Emily smiled.
“You don't owe me a lifetime of gratitude. Just promise me you'll raise your children to understand that money and power don't make someone better than anybody else.”
Dominic nodded.
“I promise.”
Emily eventually accepted his offer to help her establish a small home and a business of her own. She chose to leave domestic service and begin a new life on her terms.
At the mansion, Isabella planted lavender along the garden wall.
Lucas and Grace raced through the grass while Dominic watched from the terrace.
For the first time in years, the house was filled with ordinary sounds.
Laughter.
Running feet.
A child's excited shout.
The quiet clatter of dishes being set for dinner.
One evening, Isabella found Dominic standing in the old east wing.
The black suitcase had been placed in a glass cabinet, not as a trophy, but as a reminder of how close they had come to losing one another forever.
“You still think about that night?” she asked.
“Every day.”
She slipped her hand into his.
“Then remember what came after it.”
He kissed her forehead.
“I do.”
Later that night, after the children had gone to bed, Dominic returned to his study.
An envelope sat on his desk.
No return address.
No postage mark.
Just his name in handwriting he didn't recognize.
Inside was a photograph of his father standing beside a woman outside a small church.
The photograph appeared to have been taken years before Dominic was born.
On the back, someone had written:
YOUR FATHER DIDN'T HAVE THREE CHILDREN. HE HAD FOUR.
Dominic turned the photograph over again.
The woman was holding a baby.
The child's face had been scratched away.
Beneath the image was a second line.
ASK DANIEL WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FIRSTBORN.
Dominic stood motionless.
From the hallway came Isabella's voice.
“Dominic? Is everything all right?”
He looked toward the door.
For the first time since the suitcase appeared, he considered keeping a secret.
Not because he wanted to deceive her, but because he knew how much another revelation could hurt the family they had fought to rebuild.
Then he remembered the words he'd promised her.
No more lies.
He folded the photograph and walked toward the bedroom.
“Isabella,” he said, his voice quiet but steady, “there's something we need to talk about.”
She looked at the photograph in his hand.
Her face changed.
“Where did you get that?”
Dominic stopped.
“You recognize her?”
Isabella slowly closed the bedroom door.
Then she whispered a name he had never heard before.
“Evelyn.”
“Who is she?”
Isabella looked toward the sleeping children's rooms.
“Your father's first wife.”
Dominic felt the ground shift beneath him.
“My father had another wife?”
Isabella nodded, tears gathering in her eyes.
“And she didn't disappear before you were born.”
She took his hand.
“She disappeared the night your father brought you home.”
Dominic stared at her.
“Brought me home from where?”
Isabella opened her mouth to answer.
But before she could speak, a phone began ringing downstairs.
The security line.
Dominic hurried to the control room and answered.
A guard's voice came through, shaking.
“Boss, there's a woman at the front gate. She says she's your father's daughter.”
Dominic gripped the receiver.
“What's her name?”
The guard hesitated.
Then he replied:
“She says her name is Evelyn Moretti.”
The line went dead.
Dominic looked through the security monitor.
A woman stood outside the iron gates, holding a small black suitcase.
And beside her stood a little boy with the same dimple in his left cheek as Dominic's son.
The woman raised her face toward the camera.
Then she smiled.
May you like
“Tell Dominic,” she said, “that his family has finally come home.”
