Chapter 8 - The Man Hiding Behind the Kitchen Door

Luca ordered every employee into the ballroom.
Nobody was allowed to leave.
He stood before them with a photograph of Anthony Moretti.
“Who knew my father had another son?”
Silence.
Then Emily stepped forward.
“I did.”
Luca turned.
“What?”
Emily's eyes filled with tears.
“I knew there was another child in the house. But I never knew his real name.”
“Who was he?”
She pointed toward the kitchen.
“The boy who stood behind that door.”
Luca remembered Elena's words.
He always stood behind the kitchen door.
Emily continued.
“Your father kept him in the servants' quarters. He told everyone the boy was the son of a distant employee.”
“Why?”
“Because he had a medical condition. Your father didn't want anyone to know.”
Luca looked at Elena.
“Who was this child?”
Elena struggled to speak.
“His name was Daniel.”
“Where is he?”
Emily lowered her eyes.
“He disappeared the same night Gabriel died.”
Luca turned toward the kitchen.
A small door stood behind the pantry shelves.
He had walked past it thousands of times.
Now he noticed the old lock.
He forced it open.
Inside was a narrow room.
A child's bed.
A wooden chair.
And a wall covered with drawings.
Three boys stood in nearly every picture.
One had dark hair.
One had a scar.
The third had a small birthmark on his cheek.
Beneath the final drawing was a name.
DANIEL MORETTI.
Luca touched the paper.
“Why would Father hide him here?”
Elena entered the room.
“Because Daniel wasn't supposed to survive.”
She explained that Daniel had been born with a rare blood disorder.
His treatment required a compatible donor.
Anthony had used Gabriel's medical records to conceal the boy's identity.
For years, Gabriel had been forced to undergo medical procedures without understanding why.
Then, on the night of the birthday cake, something went wrong.
Gabriel collapsed.
Anthony declared him dead.
But the real victim had been Daniel.
The cake was merely the cover story.
Luca looked at the drawings.
“Where is Daniel now?”
Emily whispered:
“I think he's the man who made tonight's cake.”

At that moment, a phone rang inside the hidden room.
Luca found an old mobile beneath the mattress.
One message appeared.
THANK YOU FOR OPENING THE DOOR.
A second message followed.
NOW LOOK UNDER THE FLOOR.
Luca lifted the loose wooden panel.
Beneath it was a metal case.
Inside were medical files, photographs, and a small cassette.
Elena recognized the handwriting immediately.
“Anthony.”
Luca inserted the cassette into an old player.
His father's voice filled the room.
“Daniel, if you're hearing this, your mother has finally told the truth.”
A pause.
Then:
“You were never my son. You were Marcus Bellini's firstborn.”
Luca looked at Elena.
She covered her mouth.
The recording continued.
“Your mother gave birth to you before she married me. I raised you because I needed a Bellini heir to control the trust.”
Luca's face went cold.
He looked at the drawing.
Three boys.
Three different fathers.
Three different destinies.
But the recording wasn't finished.
Anthony's voice became quieter.
“Daniel, if you survived the treatment, find the girl with the silver bracelet. She knows where the original will is hidden.”
The tape clicked off.
Luca looked at Emily.
“What silver bracelet?”
She hesitated.
Then slowly removed the sleeve of her uniform.
Around her wrist was a thin silver bracelet.
Luca stared.
“Where did you get that?”
Emily's face crumpled.
“My mother gave it to me.”
Elena suddenly gasped.
“Your mother?”
Emily nodded.
“Her name was Margaret Carter.”
Elena grabbed the edge of the table.
“Margaret was my sister's daughter.”
The room went silent.
Emily was not merely a maid.
She was Elena's niece.
And according to the birth records, she was the only surviving person who could legally claim the Bellini inheritance.
Before Luca could speak, the kitchen door slammed.
A man stepped into the doorway.
He had Luca's face.
A scar above his eyebrow.
And a silver bracelet around his wrist.
Gabriel.
But he wasn't looking at Luca.
He was looking at Emily.
“Give me the bracelet,” he said.
Emily stepped backward.

Gabriel raised his gun.
“Now.”
