Chapter 1 - THE BOX BENEATH THE OAK TREE

“I'LL GIVE YOU FIFTY THOUSAND DOLLARS! JUST HAND ME THAT BOX!” THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE BEGGED AN ELDERLY GARDENER OUTSIDE THE MANSION. BUT WHEN THE MAID BROUGHT HIM INTO HER FIANCÉ'S FORTIETH BIRTHDAY DINNER, HE REVEALED A SECRET HIS FATHER HAD BURIED UNDER AN OAK TREE—AND THE TRUTH ABOUT THE MAN ACCUSED OF BETRAYING THEIR FAMILY.
The old gardener's hands were covered in dirt.
Thomas Miller, seventy-four, stood beside the mansion's garden gate, clutching a rusted tin box.
Vanessa Sterling blocked his path.
“How much do you want?”
Thomas frowned.
“Excuse me, ma'am?”
“Fifty thousand dollars. Cash. Give me the box and leave.”
Thomas tightened his grip.
“I promised Mr. Antonio I'd deliver it to his son.”
“Antonio Moretti is dead!”
“Yes, ma'am. But his promise isn't.”
Vanessa reached for the box.
Thomas stepped back.
Clara Hayes, the young housemaid, had witnessed everything from the kitchen entrance.
She hurried toward them.
“Mr. Miller, please come with me.”
Vanessa snapped:
“Clara! Don't you dare!”
But Clara gently took the old man's arm.
“He deserves to see Mr. Moretti.”
Inside the ballroom, Luca Moretti stood before a towering birthday cake.
Forty candles flickered beneath the chandeliers.
His guests raised their glasses.
Vanessa hurried inside, trying to reach him first.
But Clara stepped forward.
“Sir, your father left something for this birthday.”
The room fell silent.
Luca turned.
Clara opened the doors.
Thomas entered carrying the rusted box.
Luca stared.
“Thomas?”
The gardener had worked for the Moretti family for thirty years.
Luca hadn't seen him since Antonio's funeral.
Thomas smiled sadly.
“Happy fortieth birthday, son.”
Vanessa suddenly lunged toward the box.
“DON'T OPEN IT!”
She grabbed the lid.
Luca caught her wrist.
“Vanessa. Let go.”
“It's dangerous!”
He took the box.
“Then why did you offer Thomas fifty thousand dollars for it?”
Vanessa froze.
Clara lowered her eyes.
“I heard everything, sir.”
Luca slowly turned toward Thomas.
“What's inside?”
“Your father asked me to bury it beneath the old oak tree twelve years ago.”
“Why?”
“He said I mustn't dig it up until you turned forty.”
Luca opened the rusted lid.
Inside lay a faded photograph and a sealed letter.
He lifted the photograph.
His father, Antonio Moretti, stood beside another man.
Victor Harlan.
The man Luca had spent fifteen years believing betrayed his family.
Victor had supposedly stolen millions from the Moretti estate before disappearing.
Luca's jaw tightened.
“Why was my father meeting him?”
Thomas shook his head.
“Because everything you were told about Victor was a lie.”
Luca stared.
“What?”
The gardener stepped closer.
Then delivered the words that silenced the ballroom.
“LUCA, YOUR FATHER DIDN'T WANT THAT MAN DEAD. HE WAS WILLING TO DIE TO KEEP HIM ALIVE.”
Vanessa backed away.
Luca looked at the photograph again.
“Explain.”
Thomas pointed to the letter.
“Your father can explain better than I can.”
Luca broke the seal.
My son,
If you're reading this, you've reached the age I was when I discovered someone was stealing from our family.
Victor Harlan wasn't the thief.
He was helping me find him.
Luca stopped breathing.
For fifteen years, he'd hated Victor.
He'd blamed him for his father's financial ruin.
And now Antonio was telling him Victor had been innocent.
Luca continued reading.
We discovered forged property transfers, missing trust funds, and payments to a company that didn't officially exist.
Before we could expose the people involved, someone learned about our investigation.
Victor disappeared to protect the evidence.
Luca slowly raised his eyes.
“Where is Victor now?”
Thomas hesitated.
Then looked toward Vanessa.
“I don't know, sir. But your father believed someone close to you would eventually try to destroy this box.”
Vanessa suddenly shouted:
“THAT LETTER IS FAKE!”
Luca turned.
“How do you know what's written in it?”
She froze.
Clara stepped closer.
“Mr. Moretti, there's something beneath the photograph.”
Luca lifted the paper lining.
A small brass key lay underneath.
Attached was a numbered tag.
VAULT 17.
Thomas swallowed.
“Your father told me that key opens the place where Victor hid the original documents.”
Luca stared at Vanessa.
Her face had gone completely white.
“Why are you afraid of this key?”
She began crying.
“Because your father didn't tell you everything.”
Luca stepped closer.
“Then tell me.”
Vanessa shook her head.
Thomas quietly spoke.
“Mr. Moretti, there's one final line in the letter.”
Luca unfolded the bottom of the page.
If Vanessa Sterling is standing beside you when you open this box, do not tell her where the vault is.
His blood ran cold.
Antonio had written that warning twelve years ago.
Luca had met Vanessa only three years earlier.
He slowly looked up.
“HOW DID MY FATHER KNOW YOUR NAME NINE YEARS BEFORE WE MET?”
Vanessa covered her mouth.
Thomas's eyes filled with tears.
“Because, Luca…”
He hesitated.
“Your father knew who her family was.”
Luca stared.
“What does that mean?”
Thomas pointed to the back of the photograph.
Luca turned it over.
Three names were written there.
ANTONIO MORETTI.
VICTOR HARLAN.
And a third name.
ROBERT STERLING.
Vanessa's father.
The man who had personally introduced her to Luca.
Luca looked at his fiancée.
His voice dropped to a whisper.
“Vanessa… was your father the man they were investigating?”
Vanessa stepped backward.
And Thomas delivered one final warning.

“Sir, before Antonio died, he told me that if this box ever reached the wrong hands, Victor Harlan would be the next man to disappear.”
