Chapter 6 - The Woman Wearing Elena's Name

For three years, Luca had searched for his wife. Now someone was telling him the woman he'd found wasn't Elena at all.

He stared at Vanessa's phone.

“Explain this.”

“I can't.”

“Then call your sister.”

“I've tried. Her number is disconnected.”

Luca enlarged the photograph.

Sofia slept beneath a yellow blanket.

Beside her stood a wooden table.

On it was a framed picture.

He zoomed in.

A woman with dark hair.

Green eyes.

Elena.

His Elena.

But something about the photograph bothered him.

The woman's face was partly hidden behind a reflection.

He couldn't be certain it was her.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

“Claire could be mistaken.”

“She worked at the clinic where Elena was treated.”

“What clinic?”

“Harbor Point Medical Center.”

“Where?”

“Connecticut.”

Luca called Daniel.

“Find everything you can on Harbor Point Medical Center. Ownership, staff, records, closures. All of it.”

Then he turned back to Vanessa.

“You're coming with me.”

She hesitated.

“Where?”

“To find your sister.”

The clinic had closed eighteen months earlier.

Its former building stood behind a chain-link fence near the Connecticut shoreline.

The windows were boarded.

A faded sign hung above the entrance.

Daniel's research revealed that the clinic had been owned by a shell company connected to Frank Moretti.

Its medical director had disappeared after a federal investigation into falsified patient records.

Luca stood outside the building with Vanessa.

Caleb remained near the car.

Vanessa pointed toward a side entrance.

“Claire worked in the maternity wing.”

Luca looked at her.

“Why would Frank operate a maternity clinic?”

“Because nobody questions pregnant women traveling for medical treatment.”

Luca felt sick.

The Crown had used the clinic to move people under false identities.

Elena had discovered the operation.

And she'd been pregnant when she vanished.

Inside, they found empty examination rooms and abandoned filing cabinets.

Most records had been destroyed.

But one storage room remained locked.

Caleb forced the door.

Inside were shelves filled with archived patient folders.

Luca searched until he found a file labeled:

Patient 0447 — E. Moretti.

He opened it.

The first page contained Elena's photograph.

The second documented her pregnancy.

The third showed a transfer order.

Patient relocated under protective identity.

Signed by Dr. Samuel Voss.

Luca turned the page.

A second photograph had been stapled to the back.

It showed a woman who looked remarkably similar to Elena.

Same dark hair.

Same green eyes.

But her nose was slightly different.

Her jaw narrower.

Her name was listed as Mara Whitcomb.

Luca frowned.

“Who is this?”

Vanessa leaned closer.

“I've never seen her.”

Caleb studied the file.

“Look at the dates.”

Mara had entered the clinic six weeks after Elena disappeared.

She had been discharged under Elena's name.

Luca felt the pieces shifting.

“Someone created a substitute.”

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“That's what Claire was trying to tell me.”

“But why?”

Caleb turned another page.

A handwritten note appeared.

Subject trained for limited identity presentation. No direct contact with husband.

Luca stared.

“They built a woman who could pass for Elena.”

Vanessa whispered, “To make people believe she was alive.”

“Or to make people believe she was somewhere she wasn't.”

That evening, Daniel contacted Luca.

“I found Dr. Samuel Voss.”

“Where?”

“He's living under his real name in Vermont.”

“Can we reach him?”

“Already arranged.”

Dr. Voss agreed to meet only after Daniel explained that Luca had evidence against Frank.

They met at a roadside diner.

Voss was fifty-eight, with tired eyes and trembling hands.

He looked at Luca and immediately lowered his head.

“I knew this day would come.”

“Where is my wife?”

Voss stared at the table.

“I don't know.”

Luca leaned forward.

“You signed her transfer.”

“Yes.”

“To where?”

“A private recovery facility.”

“Run by Frank?”

Voss nodded.

“Initially.”

“What happened to her?”

“She escaped.”

“When?”

“Seven months after she arrived.”

Luca froze.

“That would have been before Sofia was born.”

“Yes.”

“Was she alone?”

Voss hesitated.

“No.”

“Who helped her?”

“A nurse.”

Luca looked toward Vanessa.

“Claire?”

Voss nodded.

“Claire Sterling.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“My sister saved Elena?”

“She tried.”

“What do you mean, tried?”

Voss removed his glasses.

“Frank discovered the escape. Claire was captured. Elena got away.”

Luca felt a small wave of relief.

Elena had escaped before giving birth.

Sofia could still be with her.

“Then why create Mara?”

Voss looked ashamed.

“Frank needed to convince Antonio that Elena was alive and under his control.”

Luca frowned.

“But Antonio met Elena.”

“Did he?”

Luca remembered the photograph.

Elena outside the coastal house.

Antonio beside her.

The resemblance had been convincing.

But photographs could lie.

“Was Antonio deceived?”

Voss shook his head.

“Not for long.”

“How did he discover it?”

“Your father knew something about Elena that Mara didn't.”

“What?”

Voss looked directly at Luca.

“Her wedding ring.”

Luca frowned.

“Elena wore my grandmother's ring.”

“Yes. The inside was engraved.”

Luca remembered the inscription.

Always, even in the dark.

Voss nodded.

“Mara didn't know it. Antonio asked her to repeat the words.”

“And she couldn't.”

“No.”

“What happened next?”

“Antonio demanded to see the real Elena.”

Luca leaned forward.

“And Frank?”

Voss's voice dropped.

“He told Antonio that if he interfered again, Sofia would disappear permanently.”

Luca sat back.

His father's silence suddenly made terrible sense.

Antonio had been protecting his granddaughter.

Voss continued.

“Your father started investigating on his own. He found out Elena had escaped. Eventually, he located her.”

Luca looked up.

“So the photograph in the watch—”

“Was real. The one with Elena at the cottage. Not every photograph was staged.”

“Did he meet her?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't he tell me?”

Voss looked toward the window.

“Because Elena asked him not to.”

Luca's voice broke.

“Why?”

“Because she believed the Crown had someone inside your home who could reach Sofia through you.”

Luca closed his eyes.

Frank.

Caleb.

Vanessa.

All the people he'd trusted.

All the people who had known his movements.

Voss reached into his coat.

“I kept one thing.”

He placed a small envelope on the table.

Inside was a photograph of Claire Sterling.

Alive.

Standing beside Elena.

And between them was a newborn baby.

Sofia.

Vanessa began crying.

“Claire…”

Luca stared at his daughter.

So tiny.

Wrapped in a white hospital blanket.

He turned the photograph over.

A date.

A location.

And a message in Elena's handwriting.

If Luca ever finds this, tell him I didn't leave because I stopped loving him.

Luca swallowed hard.

Voss spoke softly.

“There's something you should know about Claire.”

Vanessa looked up.

“What?”

“She contacted me last week.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know. But she said she'd found Sofia.”

Luca leaned forward.

“And Elena?”

Voss hesitated.

“Claire said Elena had been taken again.”

The diner seemed to fall silent.

“By whom?”

Voss looked terrified.

“She wouldn't tell me.”

Then his phone vibrated.

He glanced at the screen.

His face drained of color.

Luca reached for the phone.

A photograph had arrived.

It showed Elena sitting in a dark room.

Her hands were bound in front of her.

She was alive.

Beneath the photograph was a message.
