Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

The scandal exploded across the city within forty-eight hours.
The original birth records were authenticated. The former clinic's financial records were recovered. Two retired employees agreed to testify, and the recording Vanessa had made established Robert Sterling's role in Eleanor's confinement and the falsification of the twins' identities.
Victor Moretti was questioned about his involvement.
He admitted authorizing Eleanor's transfer to the private facility and concealing Daniel's identity. He claimed that Robert had persuaded him it was the only way to protect the family.
The investigators did not accept that explanation as an excuse.
Victor was charged with conspiracy, unlawful confinement, and obstruction of justice.
Robert faced additional charges related to fraud, document falsification, and witness intimidation.
Vanessa was also investigated for her own actions. Her cooperation helped establish the full extent of the scheme, but it did not erase her decision to threaten Eleanor.
Dominic ended the engagement publicly.
He did not insult Vanessa or humiliate her before the press. He simply released a statement confirming that their relationship had ended because of serious family misconduct and that he would not allow marriage to become a shield for wrongdoing.
Vanessa met him one final time in the mansion's garden.
"I know you will never forgive me," she said.
Dominic looked at her for a long moment.
"Forgiveness isn't something I owe you."
She lowered her head.
"I was raised to believe that winning was the only thing that mattered."
"And now?"
"Now I understand that I helped people who destroyed lives."
Dominic's expression remained guarded.
"If you truly understand that, tell the truth when you're asked. Don't protect your father. Don't protect yourself with another lie."
Vanessa nodded.
"I will."
She left the mansion alone.
Meanwhile, Daniel struggled to adjust to the sudden discovery of his family.
He had spent his entire life believing that nobody had chosen him.
Now he learned that his mother had never stopped searching for him, and his brother had grown up only a few miles away from the truth.
One evening, Daniel found Dominic in the study.
"Do you hate me?" Daniel asked.
Dominic looked up, startled.
"Why would I hate you?"
"Because I could challenge your inheritance. Because your father spent years hiding me."
Dominic stood and crossed the room.
"You didn't steal anything from me. You were stolen from us."
Daniel looked away.
"I don't know how to be a brother."
"Neither do I."
For the first time, Dominic smiled.
"We can learn."
The brothers shook hands.
Then Dominic pulled Daniel into an awkward embrace that became genuine before either could withdraw.
Across the room, Eleanor watched them with tears in her eyes.
For thirty-two years, she had dreamed of seeing her sons together.
Now she finally had both of them.
But the Moretti family still faced one final reckoning.

The organization that had made Victor powerful had also enabled him to conceal his crimes.
Dominic would have to decide whether he wanted to inherit that empire—or dismantle the parts of it that had made his family's suffering possible.
