Chapter 10 - The Family Secret Beneath the Wedding Dress

The question hung in the conservatory.

Luca looked at Elena.

“What did he mean?”

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

“Don't listen to him.”

“Then tell me the truth.”

She looked toward Sophia.

The little girl was holding Emily's hand, watching the adults with frightened eyes.

Elena knelt in front of her.

“Sweetheart, can you go with Emily for a few minutes?”

Sophia hesitated.

“Will you be here when I come back?”

Elena kissed her forehead.

“I promise.”

When they were alone, Luca stepped closer.

“Is Sophia my daughter?”

Elena looked directly into his eyes.

“Yes. She's yours.”

“Then why would he say that?”

“Because he knows how to hurt people. He wants you to doubt everything.”

Luca studied her face.

“Was there anyone else?”

“No.”

“Did you ever believe I was involved in your disappearance?”

Elena shook her head.

“I knew you weren't. But I also knew you were surrounded by people who would destroy you if you tried to save me.”

She explained what had happened after the wedding dress photograph was taken.

She had discovered that Richard Rowan was using the clinic to falsify birth records and transfer children to wealthy families through illegal adoptions.

Anthony had arranged the security and transportation.

But the money came from a network controlled by someone with access to the Moretti family's oldest accounts.

When Elena tried to expose them, she was attacked at the Rowan estate.

Vanessa had been present.

She had not caused the attack, but she had witnessed what happened.

Later, Isabella helped Elena escape.

The dress had been left behind as evidence.

The stain was not Elena's blood.

It belonged to a man who had been killed during the struggle.

The wedding gift had been arranged by Vanessa herself, with help from an anonymous contact who promised to reveal the truth publicly.

Luca frowned.

“Vanessa sent the box?”

Elena nodded.

“She wanted to stop the wedding. She knew I might still be alive, but she was too afraid to tell you directly.”

“Why?”

“Because her father had threatened her. And because she had helped him hide the evidence.”

Luca looked away.

“Where is she now?”

“Under protection.”

They returned to the mansion before dawn.

Vanessa was waiting in the study with Marco.

Her face was pale, and her hands were cuffed.

When she saw Elena, she began crying.

“You're alive.”

Elena looked at her.

“You knew I was.”

“I didn't know where you were. I swear.”

Luca placed the photograph on the desk.

“The doctor. Who is he?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Dr. Samuel Price. He signed your father's death certificate.”

“Why was he with you?”

“Because he contacted me two days ago. He said he had proof that Richard wasn't the person who ordered the murder.”

“Who was?”

Vanessa looked at the floor.

“I don't know.”

Luca leaned forward.

“Don't lie to me again.”

Vanessa began crying harder.

“He said the person responsible was someone who had been dead for years.”

Luca frowned.

“Who?”

Vanessa looked at Elena.

“Your father.”

Silence filled the room.

Elena shook her head.

“That's impossible.”

Vanessa continued.

“Dr. Price said your father arranged the first adoption operation. He said he discovered that Anthony and Richard were stealing money and using the clinic for their own purposes. He tried to stop them, but he had already built the system.”

Luca stared at her.

“My father was killed because he was going to expose them?”

Vanessa nodded.

“He left a second set of records. Someone has been searching for them ever since.”

Luca looked at Elena.

“Where are they?”

Elena slowly opened her leather bag.

She removed a small silver pin.

The same pin that had been attached to the wedding dress.

But this one was hollow.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

“My father-in-law gave it to me before he died,” she whispered. “He told me to hide it where nobody would think to look.”

Luca took it.

“What does it contain?”

“Everything.”

For the first time in seven years, the family had a chance to bring the entire operation down.

Over the following weeks, the evidence was delivered to federal investigators.

Richard Rowan was arrested.

Dr. Price disappeared before he could be questioned.

Anthony was eventually captured at a private airfield after one of his own associates betrayed him.

The illegal adoption network was exposed, and dozens of families finally learned what had happened to their missing children.

Emily was reunited with Daniel, and Luca personally funded a legal investigation into every record connected to the clinic.

Vanessa agreed to testify.

She lost her inheritance, her social standing, and the future she had imagined beside Luca.

But she finally told the truth.

One evening, Luca and Elena returned to the ballroom.

The crystal chandeliers were still there.

The wedding decorations had been removed, but the old marble floor remained.

Sophia ran between them, laughing.

“Can we have a real wedding now?”

Elena smiled.

“Only if you promise not to bring another giant box.”

Sophia giggled.

Luca took Elena's hand.

“I don't need a wedding to know you're my wife.”

She looked at him.

“But I want one.”

He kissed her forehead.

“Then we'll have one.”

A small ceremony was held in the garden three months later.

No politicians.

No business associates.

No armed guests.

Just family, a handful of trusted friends, and the little girl who had brought them back together.

Emily stood beside Elena.

Sophia carried the rings.

For the first time in years, Luca smiled without forcing himself to.

But as the ceremony ended, Marco approached with an envelope.

“Boss. This arrived at the front gate.”

Luca opened it.

There was no return address.

Inside was a photograph of his father standing outside the Moretti mansion.

The picture was old.

Very old.

On the back was a handwritten message.

YOU FOUND THE CHILDREN. NOW FIND THE WOMAN WHO GAVE THEM AWAY.

Luca turned the photograph over again.

A second image had been tucked behind it.

It showed his father standing beside a young woman.

The woman wore the same silver pin Elena had hidden inside the wedding dress.

But she wasn't Vanessa.

She wasn't Elena.

She was someone Luca had known his entire life.

Someone he had believed was incapable of betraying him.

His mother, Isabella.

Beneath the photograph was one final sentence.

SHE DIDN'T DIE EIGHT YEARS AGO. SHE DIED THREE WEEKS AGO.

Luca looked toward the garden.

Isabella stood beside Sophia, smiling as she watched the child throw flower petals into the air.

He slowly lowered the photograph.

His mother was alive.

He had spoken to her.

He had held her hand.

But the date on the photograph suggested something impossible.

The woman standing in his garden might not be the woman who had raised him.

And somewhere beyond the mansion gates, someone was waiting for him to discover the difference.

Luca slipped the photograph into his jacket.

Then he looked at Elena.

“There's something else we need to find.”

She took his hand.

“What is it?”

He glanced toward the woman standing beside their daughter.

“The truth about my mother.”

Across the garden, Isabella turned.

For one brief second, her smile disappeared.

She looked directly at Luca.

May you like

And silently mouthed two words.

RUN, SON.
