Chapter 10 - The Bride, the Maid, and the Last Moretti Secret

Luca found blood on the carpet.

Antonio was alive, but a bullet had grazed his shoulder.

Vanessa knelt beside him, pressing a handkerchief against the wound.

“Where's Emily?”

Nobody answered.

The guards searched the mansion.

The gates were sealed.

The cameras showed no vehicle leaving.

Yet Emily was gone.

Luca stood in the middle of the library, staring at the photograph of the newborn baby.

The last surviving Moretti heir.

He remembered Emily's quiet kindness.

The way she had protected his mother.

The way she had noticed the ring before anyone else.

She hadn't been an ordinary maid.

She had been placed inside the mansion for a reason.

“Antonio,” Luca said. “Tell me the truth.”

His father struggled to sit up.

“Your mother wanted Emily protected.”

“From whom?”

“From Stefano.”

“But you just said Stefano was dead.”

Antonio looked at him.

“I never said that.”

Luca's expression darkened.

“Then the man on the stretcher…”

“Was his brother. The man we buried twelve years ago was the real Stefano.”

Luca stared.

“Then who has been pretending to be him?”

Antonio looked toward Vanessa.

“Richard Bellini.”

Vanessa stopped breathing.

“My father?”

Antonio nodded.

“Your father arranged the hospital switch. He knew the Moretti family needed an heir. He also knew that whoever controlled the heir would control the empire.”

Luca looked at the photograph again.

“Why Emily?”

“Because she was born to your mother. She was supposed to inherit everything after you.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Then why was she working as a maid?”

“Because your mother wanted her close enough to protect you, but far enough away from the people who wanted her dead.”

Luca looked toward the empty doorway.

Emily had been protecting him all along.

Now he needed to find her.

His phone vibrated.

A location appeared.

An abandoned church outside the city.

Below it was a message.

Come alone if you want the girl alive.

Luca grabbed his coat.

Vanessa stood.

“I'm coming.”

“No.”

“Luca, he has my father.”

“And he has Emily. I'm not risking both of you.”

Vanessa grabbed his hand.

“You don't get to make that decision alone anymore.”

For a moment, he looked at her.

Then he nodded.

They drove to the church with two cars following at a distance.

Inside, candles illuminated the old stone walls.

Emily stood near the altar.

Her hands were tied.

A man stood behind her.

He had gray hair and a familiar face.

Richard Bellini.

Vanessa's father.

“Hello, daughter.”

Vanessa froze.

“You're alive.”

Richard smiled.

“Unfortunately, your mother never learned when to stop asking questions.”

Luca raised his weapon.

“Release Emily.”

Richard laughed.

“You still think this is about money?”

He gestured toward the altar.

A small wooden box sat beneath a cross.

Inside were two wedding rings.

One belonged to Antonio.

The other belonged to Daniel Russo.

Richard opened a document.

“Your biological father signed away his rights before you were born. The Moretti fortune was never supposed to belong to you.”

Luca looked at Emily.

“Is that why you took her?”

Richard nodded.

“Emily has the original inheritance documents. Her mother hid them before she disappeared.”

Emily shook her head.

“I don't have them.”

Richard stepped closer.

“Your mother gave you something. You just never knew what it was.”

He reached into his pocket and produced a small silver locket.

Emily gasped.

It was the one her mother had given her when she was a child.

Richard opened it.

Inside was a tiny photograph.

A newborn baby.

And beneath it, a folded piece of paper.

He handed it to Luca.

The document contained a final declaration from Antonio Moretti.

I leave the Moretti estate, all legitimate business interests, and the protection of the family name to my daughter, Emily Carter.

Luca stared.

Emily began crying.

Richard smiled.

“Now you understand.”

Luca looked at Emily.

“You're my sister.”

Emily shook her head.

“I didn't know.”

“Neither did I.”

Richard raised his gun.

“But now you both know. And only one of you gets to leave this church.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You won't shoot them.”

Richard turned toward her.

“You always were a sentimental child.”

She looked directly into his eyes.

“You killed my mother.”

Richard's expression changed.

“She was weak.”

“You told me she died in a hospital.”

“She discovered the original records.”

Vanessa slowly reached into her coat.

Luca noticed the movement.

“Vanessa…”

She held up a small recording device.

“I recorded everything.”

Richard lunged.

Luca fired.

The bullet struck the stone wall beside Richard's head.

At the same moment, Vanessa struck his wrist.

His gun fell.

Emily kicked it away.

Luca tackled Richard to the floor.

The struggle ended when the church doors burst open.

His security team rushed inside.

Richard was dragged away in handcuffs.

For the first time in years, the Moretti family had an enemy who could no longer hide behind a false identity.

But the victory came with a cost.

Antonio died two days later.

Before his death, he asked to speak to Luca alone.

“You don't have to become the man I was,” he whispered.

Luca held his hand.

“I don't know what kind of man I am anymore.”

Antonio smiled weakly.

“Then choose.”

He looked toward Emily.

“Protect your sister.”

Then toward Vanessa.

“And don't punish her for the sins of her father.”

Those were his final words.

Three months later, Luca stood in the family cemetery.

Two new gravestones had been placed beside the old Moretti monument.

One carried Antonio's name.

The other carried Gabriel's.

Luca had finally accepted that his brother had existed, even if the family had spent years confusing his memory with someone else's lies.

Emily had left the mansion.

She refused the inheritance at first, but eventually agreed to take control of the legitimate family businesses.

She also began searching for her mother.

Vanessa had stayed.

Not because Luca demanded it.

Not because she needed his protection.

But because, for the first time, she wanted to build a life without secrets.

One evening, Luca found her standing in the ballroom.

The wedding decorations were gone.

The floor had been polished.

The crystal chandeliers were still shining.

“Do you ever think about that night?” she asked.

“Every day.”

“Do you hate me?”

He considered the question.

“I hated the lies. I hated what you did. But I never stopped wanting to know the truth.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I don't know if we can ever have the wedding we planned.”

Luca took her hand.

“I don't want the wedding we planned.”

He looked toward the ballroom doors.

“I want something honest.”

Vanessa began to cry.

This time, they were not tears of fear.

Six months later, they married in a small garden ceremony.

There were no armed guards beside the altar.

No hidden documents.

No strangers carrying stretchers.

Emily stood beside Vanessa as her maid of honor.

For a brief moment, Luca believed the nightmare was finally over.

Until the reception.

A courier approached Emily and handed her a small black envelope.

There was no return address.

Inside was a photograph of a woman standing outside a train station.

Emily recognized her immediately.

Her mother.

On the back were four handwritten words:

I KNOW WHO SURVIVED.

Emily's smile disappeared.

She turned the photograph over again.

A second note had been folded beneath it.

Your brother is alive.

She looked across the garden at Luca.

Then at Vanessa.

Before she could speak, her phone rang.

An unfamiliar number.

She answered.

A woman's voice whispered:

“Emily, don't tell Luca. The man he buried wasn't your father.”

Emily's face went white.

“Who is this?”

The woman took a shaky breath.

Then whispered:

“I'm your mother. And the man standing beside Luca right now…”

A pause.

“...is not Antonio Moretti.”

The call ended.

Emily slowly looked toward Luca.

He was smiling at Vanessa.

But behind him, near the garden gate, stood a man with silver hair.

The man had a scar beneath his left eye.

He raised two fingers in a silent greeting.

Then disappeared into the crowd.

Emily looked down at the photograph.

There was one final detail she hadn't noticed.

The date printed beneath the image.

Taken this morning.

And the woman standing beside her mother was wearing Vanessa's wedding dress.
