Chapter 5 - The Child at the Gate

Elena reached the front entrance before Dominic did.

“Lily!”

Her six-year-old daughter ran into her arms, sobbing so hard she could barely speak.

Elena dropped to her knees, holding the child against her chest.

“Baby, what are you doing here? Where's Mrs. Bell?”

Lily shook her head.

“A man brought me.”

Dominic crouched beside them.

“What man?”

“He said Mommy was working late. He told me to wait at the gate.”

Elena's face drained of color.

“Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

“Did he say anything else?”

Lily held up the stuffed rabbit.

“He said this belonged to Grandma.”

Elena went completely still.

Dominic noticed.

“What does she mean?”

Elena hugged her daughter tighter.

“It's a family toy. My mother gave it to Lily.”

“Your mother?”

Elena nodded, struggling to keep her voice steady.

“My mother worked here years ago. She was a nurse for the Moretti family.”

Margaret appeared in the hallway, leaning on a cane Marcus had found for her.

She stared at the rabbit.

Then at Elena.

“Catherine's daughter?”

Elena looked up sharply.

“You knew my mother?”

Margaret sat down as if her legs could no longer support her.

“Catherine was the only person who helped me after Antonio died. She brought me food. She brought me medicine. She tried to get a message to Dominic.”

“What happened to her?” Elena asked.

Margaret's eyes filled with tears.

“She disappeared.”

Elena closed her eyes.

“My mother was reported missing when I was nine. The police said she had abandoned us. I never believed them.”

Dominic felt the room shift around him.

Elena had not entered his house looking for money or secrets. She had been living inside a place that had already swallowed someone she loved.

“Why didn't you tell me?” he asked.

Elena looked at him.

“Because I didn't know what happened here. I needed a job, sir. I had a child to raise. I didn't want to lose the only income that kept us safe.”

Her honesty cut deeper than any accusation.

Dominic looked toward the security guards.

“Lock down the property. No one leaves without being checked.”

Then he turned to Elena.

“Your daughter stays with us until we know who brought her here.”

Elena's jaw tightened.

“I'm not handing my child over to anyone.”

“You're not. I'm offering protection.”

“Protection is what people offer right before they decide they know better than you.”

Dominic had no answer.

For the first time that night, someone had challenged him without fear, and he understood that power was not the same thing as trust.

He stepped back.

“Then you decide where she stays. Marcus will secure the house, and you can have a guard outside your room. The choice is yours.”

Elena studied him, then nodded.

“Thank you.”

Later, while Lily slept in Elena's arms, Dominic examined the rabbit.

The brass key was not the only object attached to it. A small metal plate had been sewn into the lining, hidden beneath the stuffing.

Elena carefully removed the stitches.

Inside was a folded strip of paper.

The handwriting was unmistakably Antonio's.

IF MARGARET IS ALIVE, FIND THE WOMAN WHO DELIVERED MY SON.

Dominic read it twice.

“What does that mean?”

Margaret covered her mouth.

“Your birth was difficult. The doctor who delivered you was Dr. Samuel Reed. He disappeared shortly after your father's death.”

“Why would he need to be found?”

“Because he knew something about the hospital records. Something Antonio was desperate to keep hidden.”

Dominic looked at the date written on the note.

Twenty-six years earlier.

He turned toward Elena.

“Did your mother ever mention Dr. Reed?”

Elena shook her head.

“No. But she left me a box of things when I was young. I never opened everything.”

“Where is it?”

“At my apartment.”

Dominic glanced at Marcus.

“Send two men with her. No one goes inside alone.”

Elena's expression hardened.

“My home isn't a crime scene.”

“No. But someone has already used your daughter to threaten you.”

She looked at Lily, then reluctantly agreed.

An hour later, they returned with a battered cardboard box containing old photographs, nursing certificates, and a sealed envelope.

The envelope had Elena's name on it.

Inside was a letter from her mother.

My darling Elena, if you're reading this, I wasn't able to come home. Don't trust anyone who tells you the Moretti family has no secrets. I tried to save a woman and a child. I failed one of them. Please don't let the other disappear.

At the bottom was a name.

Dr. Samuel Reed.

And beneath it, a handwritten address.

Dominic recognized the location.

It was a private clinic that had closed after a fire twenty years earlier.

He turned to Margaret.

“Why would a doctor hide there?”

She looked at the letter and began to tremble.

“Because that was where I was taken after your birth.”

Dominic stared at her.

“You were taken there when I was born?”

Margaret nodded slowly.

Then she looked at Elena.

“Your mother didn't disappear because she knew my secret.”

She reached for the letter.

May you like

“She disappeared because she knew Dominic wasn't the only baby born in that hospital that night.”
