Chapter 1 - THE UPSIDE-DOWN GLASS

"# THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE PUSHED HIS DAUGHTER AWAY FROM THE DINNER TABLE—THEN THE OLD CHEF WHISPERED, “SHE REMEMBERS THE NIGHT YOUR WIFE DISAPPEARED.”

“YOUR MOTHER IS NEVER COMING BACK! STOP ASKING ABOUT HER!” THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE SCREAMED BEFORE SHOVING HIS SIX-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER AWAY FROM THE DINNER TABLE. A YOUNG MAID CAUGHT THE CRYING CHILD JUST AS HER FATHER WALKED IN. BUT WHEN THE LITTLE GIRL TURNED A WATER GLASS UPSIDE DOWN, THE FAMILY'S ELDERLY CHEF WENT PALE. HE RECOGNIZED A SECRET SIGNAL HER MISSING MOTHER HAD TAUGHT HER—AND IT MEANT SOMEONE SITTING AT THAT TABLE KNEW EXACTLY WHERE SHE WAS.

“WHY DOESN'T MOMMY COME HOME?”

Six-year-old Sophie Moretti stood beside the enormous dining table, clutching a faded pink ribbon.

Twenty-four guests sat beneath crystal chandeliers in the Moretti mansion.

At the head of the table, Vanessa Sterling slowly lowered her champagne glass.

“Sophie, we've discussed this.”

The little girl looked at her.

“But Daddy said Mommy went away.”

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

“That was three years ago.”

Sophie swallowed.

“Then why hasn't she called me?”

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

Vanessa leaned forward.

“BECAUSE SHE DOESN'T WANT TO COME BACK!”

Sophie's eyes filled with tears.

“That's not true.”

Vanessa stood.

“Excuse me?”

“Mommy loves me.”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Then where is she?”

Sophie looked down at the ribbon.

Her mother had tied it around her wrist the night she disappeared.

She had kept it ever since.

“Maybe she's lost,” Sophie whispered.

Vanessa slammed her palm against the table.

“YOUR MOTHER IS NEVER COMING BACK! STOP ASKING ABOUT HER!”

Sophie flinched.

“Please don't yell.”

Vanessa grabbed the child's shoulder.

“I've had enough of your questions!”

She shoved Sophie away from the table.

The little girl stumbled backward.

Her heel caught the edge of the carpet.

“AH!”

Before she could hit the marble floor, someone caught her.

Emily Carter.

The twenty-five-year-old maid had been carrying a tray of desserts.

She immediately set it aside and wrapped both arms around Sophie.

“I've got you, sweetheart.”

Sophie began sobbing.

“Emily…”

Vanessa spun toward them.

“GET YOUR HANDS OFF HER!”

Emily gently helped Sophie stand.

Then moved between the child and Vanessa.

“Please, ma'am. She's frightened.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She's spoiled!”

Emily remained calm.

“She's asking about her mother.”

Vanessa's face reddened.

“AND I'M TELLING HER TO STOP!”

She reached toward Sophie again.

Emily didn't move.

“Please don't push her.”

Vanessa stared in disbelief.

“Are you challenging me?”

“No, ma'am.”

“Then move!”

Emily shook her head.

“Not while she's crying.”

Vanessa raised her hand.

But a deep voice came from the doorway.

“VANESSA!”

Everyone froze.

Luca Moretti stood at the entrance.

Thirty-eight years old, tall and broad-shouldered, he wore a tailored black suit.

New York's most feared mafia boss had returned early from a private meeting.

And he had witnessed his fiancée shove his daughter.

His expression turned cold.

“STEP AWAY FROM MY CHILD.”

Vanessa immediately lowered her hand.

“Luca! Darling!”

He ignored her.

He crossed the room and knelt in front of Sophie.

“Princess?”

The little girl rushed into his arms.

“Daddy!”

Luca held her tightly.

“Are you hurt?”

Sophie shook her head.

But her entire body was trembling.

Luca kissed her forehead.

“I'm here.”

Then he slowly looked toward Vanessa.

“WHY DID YOU PUSH MY DAUGHTER?”

Vanessa forced a laugh.

“Luca, you're misunderstanding everything.”

“I saw you.”

“She was misbehaving!”

Luca stood, holding Sophie against his chest.

“She's six years old.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“She keeps asking ridiculous questions about Isabella!”

The name struck Luca like a knife.

Isabella Moretti.

His wife.

The woman who had vanished three years earlier without a trace.

No body.

No ransom demand.

No explanation.

Only an abandoned car found near the Hudson River.

Luca's expression darkened.

“MY DAUGHTER HAS EVERY RIGHT TO ASK ABOUT HER MOTHER.”

Vanessa looked away.

“Not during dinner!”

Luca turned toward Emily.

“What happened?”

The maid answered carefully.

“Sophie asked why Mrs. Isabella hadn't come home.”

“And?”

“Mrs. Sterling became angry.”

Vanessa interrupted.

“SHE'S LYING!”

Emily didn't react.

She simply looked toward Sophie.

The little girl was still clutching the pink ribbon.

Luca noticed.

“Sweetheart, what's that?”

Sophie looked down.

“Mommy gave it to me.”

Luca swallowed.

“I remember.”

Sophie whispered:

“She said I should keep it until she came back.”

The room fell silent.

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

“Luca, please. You're encouraging her fantasies.”

Luca slowly turned.

“ONE MORE WORD ABOUT MY DAUGHTER, AND YOU'LL LEAVE THIS TABLE.”

Vanessa froze.

He gently set Sophie down beside him.

“Come sit with Daddy.”

But Sophie didn't sit.

Instead, she stared at the water glass beside Luca's plate.

Her expression changed.

She reached for it.

Emily noticed.

“Sophie?”

The little girl lifted the glass.

Then carefully turned it upside down.

CLINK.

She placed it in the center of the table.

Every guest stared.

Vanessa frowned.

“What are you doing now?”

Sophie didn't answer.

She simply looked around the table.

One face at a time.

Then a quiet voice came from behind the serving doors.

“MR. MORETTI…”

Everyone turned.

Antonio Bellini, the family's seventy-four-year-old chef, stood motionless beside the doorway.

He had worked for the Moretti family for forty-two years.

His face had gone completely white.

Luca frowned.

“Antonio?”

The old man stared at the upside-down glass.

His hands began trembling.

“SHE REMEMBERS.”

Luca slowly approached.

“Remembers what?”

Antonio swallowed.

“The night your wife disappeared.”

The entire dining room fell silent.

Vanessa suddenly stood.

“This is ridiculous!”

Luca raised his hand.

“Sit down.”

Vanessa froze.

He looked at Antonio.

“Explain.”

The old chef pointed toward the glass.

“MR. MORETTI, YOUR WIFE TAUGHT HER THAT SIGNAL.”

Luca stared.

“What signal?”

Antonio stepped closer.

“Mrs. Isabella used to play a little game with Sophie in the kitchen.”

Sophie looked up.

“Mommy's secret game.”

Antonio nodded slowly.

“Yes, sweetheart.”

Luca's heart began pounding.

“What kind of game?”

Antonio looked around the table.

Then lowered his voice.

“Your wife told me that if Sophie ever became frightened and couldn't explain why, she should turn a glass upside down.”

Luca frowned.

“Why?”

Antonio hesitated.

“Because Mrs. Isabella was afraid someone in this house was watching her.”

Vanessa laughed nervously.

“That's absurd!”

Antonio ignored her.

He looked directly at Luca.

“Three nights before she vanished, your wife came into my kitchen crying.”

Luca froze.

“Isabella was crying?”

Antonio nodded.

“She said she'd discovered something terrible.”

“What?”

“She wouldn't tell me.”

Luca's jaw tightened.

“Why didn't you tell me this three years ago?”

Antonio lowered his eyes.

“Because the next morning, someone threatened my granddaughter.”

The room went silent.

Luca stepped closer.

“Who?”

Antonio shook his head.

“I never saw their face.”

Luca stared at the glass.

Then at Sophie.

His little girl was watching the guests with a seriousness no six-year-old should have needed.

He knelt beside her.

“Princess, did Mommy teach you to do this?”

Sophie nodded.

“Yes, Daddy.”

“Do you remember why?”

The child hesitated.

Then whispered:

“Because bad people can smile.”

Luca stopped breathing.

Antonio covered his mouth.

Vanessa suddenly grabbed her handbag.

“I've had enough of this nonsense!”

Luca didn't look at her.

“YOU'RE NOT LEAVING.”

She froze.

He turned toward Antonio.

“What does the upside-down glass mean?”

The old chef swallowed.

Then answered:

“IT MEANS SOMEONE AT THIS TABLE KNOWS WHERE SHE IS.”

A shocked murmur spread through the room.

Luca stared at him.

“What?”

Antonio's voice trembled.

“Mrs. Isabella told Sophie that if she ever recognized someone connected to the night she disappeared, she should turn a glass upside down.”

Luca slowly looked toward his daughter.

“Sophie…”

The little girl clutched the pink ribbon.

Her hands were shaking.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, sweetheart?”

“I remember something.”

Luca felt his heart stop.

“What do you remember?”

Sophie looked toward the guests.

“Mommy was crying.”

Luca swallowed.

“When?”

“The night she went away.”

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Luca gently held Sophie's shoulders.

“Did you see who was with her?”

Sophie nodded.

Luca's voice broke.

“Who?”

The little girl looked around the table.

Vanessa slowly stepped backward.

Everyone noticed.

Luca turned toward her.

“Vanessa?”

She shook her head.

“I wasn't even living here three years ago!”

Luca stared at her.

Then looked back at Sophie.

“Princess, can you show Daddy?”

Sophie hesitated.

Emily knelt beside her.

“It's okay, sweetheart. You're safe.”

The little girl took a trembling breath.

Then slowly raised her hand.

Her finger moved across the table.

Past Vanessa.

Past Luca's uncle.

Past two family attorneys.

Then stopped.

Luca followed her gaze.

And froze.

At the far end of the table sat Matteo Moretti.

Luca's thirty-four-year-old younger brother.

His closest friend.

His most trusted adviser.

The man who had helped organize the search for Isabella.

The man who had stood beside Luca when the police found her abandoned car.

The man who had promised to find her, no matter how long it took.

Sophie pointed directly at him.

“HIM, DADDY.”

The room went completely silent.

Matteo's smile disappeared.

Luca slowly stood.

“Sophie…”

The little girl's voice trembled.

“UNCLE MATTEO WAS THERE WHEN MOMMY CRIED.”

Matteo went pale.

Luca stared at his brother.

“What?”

Matteo shook his head.

“Luca, she's confused.”

Sophie began crying.

“No, I'm not!”

Emily gently held her hand.

Luca didn't move.

His eyes remained fixed on Matteo.

The brother he'd trusted with his business.

His secrets.

His daughter.

And the investigation into his missing wife.

Matteo slowly pushed back his chair.

“Luca, listen to me.”

But Sophie spoke again.

Her small voice cut through the silence.

“MOMMY TOLD HIM TO LET HER GO.”

Luca felt the blood drain from his face.

Matteo froze.

Sophie pointed at him again.

“AND HE SAID SHE COULDN'T LEAVE UNTIL YOU SIGNED THE PAPERS.”

Nobody breathed.

Luca slowly turned toward his brother.

“What papers?”

Matteo opened his mouth.

No words came out.

Antonio gripped the back of a chair.

Vanessa stared at Matteo with an expression Luca couldn't understand.

Fear.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Luca looked at his daughter.

Then at the upside-down glass.

Then at the man he had trusted more than anyone in the world.

His voice dropped to a dangerous whisper.

“MATTEO… WHAT DID YOU DO TO MY WIFE?”

His brother slowly stood.

For the first time in three years, Matteo Moretti looked genuinely terrified.

And Luca realized the person who had helped him search for Isabella might have known where she was all along.
