Chapter 1 - The Choice That Silenced Eighty Guests

“EITHER THAT BLIND OLD WOMAN LEAVES THIS DINNER, OR I DO!” THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE SCREAMED IN FRONT OF EIGHTY GUESTS. BUT WHEN A MAID PLAYED A SECRET RECORDING, THE MAFIA BOSS DISCOVERED HIS FIANCÉE HAD ORDERED HIS OWN MOTHER LOCKED AWAY SO SHE WOULDN'T APPEAR IN THEIR ENGAGEMENT PHOTOS.
“Dante, get away from her!”
Vanessa Sterling's voice cut through the elegant ballroom.
Dante Moretti sat beside his seventy-six-year-old mother, Eleanor, gently guiding her hand toward a glass of water.
Eleanor had been blind for nearly twelve years.
She couldn't see the chandeliers, the flowers, or the beautiful engagement decorations.
But she'd spent the entire afternoon looking forward to celebrating her son's happiness.
“Is everything all right, sweetheart?” she asked softly.
Dante squeezed her hand.
“Everything's fine, Mom.”
Vanessa marched toward them in her crimson evening gown.
“No, it isn't!”
Eighty guests turned.
“Dante, you're supposed to be greeting our investors, not sitting here babysitting your mother!”
Dante slowly looked up.
“Vanessa. Lower your voice.”
“I'm tired of being ignored!”
Eleanor immediately tried to stand.
“Oh, I'm sorry, dear. I didn't mean to cause trouble.”
Dante gently stopped her.
“Mom, sit down. You haven't done anything wrong.”
Vanessa folded her arms.
Then delivered her ultimatum.
“EITHER SHE LEAVES THIS DINNER, OR I DO!”
The ballroom fell silent.
Eleanor's face crumpled.
Her fingers searched for the edge of the table.
“Dante,” she whispered, “perhaps I should go upstairs.”
Clara Hayes, the young maid standing nearby, hurried forward.
“Mrs. Moretti, please don't.”
Vanessa spun around.
“Nobody asked you to speak!”
Clara lowered her head.
“I'm sorry, ma'am. But Mrs. Moretti hasn't done anything wrong.”
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
“YOU'RE FIRED. GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!”
Clara froze.
She had worked for the Moretti family for five years.
Eleanor was the reason she'd stayed.
The elderly woman had treated her like family, remembering her birthday and asking about her sick younger brother.
Now Clara was being fired for defending her.
Dante slowly stood.
“Vanessa.”
His voice was dangerously quiet.
“Who gave you permission to fire my staff?”
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“Darling, I'm going to be your wife. This household will be mine to manage.”
Dante looked at his mother.
Eleanor sat motionless, trying not to cry.
Then he looked back at Vanessa.
“YOU JUST TOLD ME TO CHOOSE BETWEEN YOU AND THE WOMAN WHO RAISED ME.”
Vanessa lifted her chin.
“And I'm waiting for your answer.”
Clara suddenly stepped forward.
“Sir, before you answer, there's something you need to hear.”
Vanessa's expression changed.
“Clara, leave. Now!”
But the maid remained where she stood.
Her hands trembled as she took out her phone.
“Mrs. Moretti was supposed to be locked in her bedroom tonight.”
Dante turned sharply.
“What?”
Clara swallowed.
“Mrs. Sterling gave the order this afternoon.”
Vanessa lunged toward her.
“GIVE ME THAT PHONE!”
Dante stepped between them.
“Don't touch her.”
Clara pressed play.
Vanessa's unmistakable voice filled the ballroom.
“Keep Eleanor upstairs until the dinner is over. I don't want that blind woman wandering into our engagement photographs.”
A second voice asked:
“But Mrs. Moretti says her son promised she'd sit beside him.”
Vanessa replied:
“Then lock the bedroom door. Tell her Dante doesn't want her downstairs.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Dante stared at his fiancée.
Eleanor's hands began shaking.
“Dante?” she whispered.
He turned toward her.
“Mom?”
Her voice broke.
“They told me you didn't want me at dinner.”
Dante froze.
“What?”
Eleanor wiped her cheeks.
“I was waiting in my room. Someone said you'd be embarrassed if I came downstairs.”
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
“I found Mrs. Moretti crying behind her locked bedroom door, sir. I opened it and brought her down myself.”
Dante slowly faced Vanessa.
“YOU WANTED MY MOTHER LOCKED AWAY AT MY OWN ENGAGEMENT DINNER?”
Vanessa stepped backward.
“Dante, I was only trying to protect our image!”
“From my mother?”
“She doesn't belong in every photograph!”
Dante's jaw tightened.
“SHE BELONGS IN EVERY PART OF MY LIFE.”
A few guests lowered their eyes.
Vanessa began crying.
“Please, Dante. Don't humiliate me in front of everyone.”
He looked at Eleanor.
His mother was silently crying into her handkerchief.
Then Dante removed the engagement ring from Vanessa's finger.
The room gasped.
Vanessa stared at him.
“You can't do this!”
Dante placed the ring on the table.
“You made me choose.”
He took his mother's hand.
“I CHOOSE HER.”
Eleanor began sobbing.
“Oh, Dante…”
He kissed her forehead.
“You're never going to be locked away in your own home again.”
Vanessa grabbed his sleeve.
“Dante, please! I made one mistake!”
Clara spoke quietly.
“Sir… it wasn't just tonight.”
Dante stopped.
He turned toward the maid.
“What do you mean?”
Clara hesitated.
Then looked at Eleanor.
“Mrs. Moretti has been trying to tell you something for weeks.”
Vanessa's face drained of color.
“Clara, don't.”
Eleanor slowly lifted her head.
“Dante, I thought you knew.”
“Knew what, Mom?”
The elderly woman's lips trembled.
“Vanessa told me you were selling your father's house.”
Dante frowned.
“What?”
“She said I would have to move into a care facility after the wedding.”
Dante stared at Vanessa.
“I never said that.”
Clara reached into her apron.
“Sir, I found these papers on Mrs. Moretti's desk this morning.”
She handed him a folder.
Inside were documents authorizing the sale of the family estate.
And an application for Eleanor's admission to a private residential facility.
Dante scanned the pages.
His signature appeared at the bottom.
But he had never signed them.
He slowly looked up.
“VANESSA… WHY IS MY SIGNATURE ON THESE DOCUMENTS?”
Vanessa began trembling.
“I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
She glanced toward the ballroom doors.
Clara suddenly pointed to the last page.
“Sir, look at the date.”
Dante turned it over.
The documents had been prepared six months earlier.
Three months before he proposed to Vanessa.
And beneath the forged signature was a second authorization.
One transferring control of Eleanor's personal trust.
Dante stared at the name of the proposed trustee.
VANESSA STERLING.
He looked at his fiancée.
His voice shook with fury.
“YOU WEREN'T JUST TRYING TO GET RID OF MY MOTHER. YOU WERE TRYING TO TAKE EVERYTHING SHE OWNS?”
Vanessa backed toward the doors.
Eleanor reached for her son's hand.
“Dante, there's something else.”
He turned.
“What is it, Mom?”
The elderly woman whispered:
“Your father warned me about the Sterling family before he died.”
Dante went completely still.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
Eleanor tightened her grip on his hand.
“HE SAID IF A STERLING EVER CAME INTO THIS HOUSE, I MUST NEVER LET THEM FIND THE DOCUMENTS HE HID IN MY ROOM.”
Vanessa suddenly screamed:
“STOP HER! DON'T LET HER SAY ANOTHER WORD!”
Dante turned toward his former fiancée.
“WHAT DOCUMENTS, VANESSA? AND WHY ARE YOU SO AFRAID OF WHAT MY MOTHER KNOWS?”
