Chapter 9 - The Truth Unmasked

The aftermath was swift and absolute.

Under the cold supervision of Anthony’s men, the DiMaggio trust was completely liquidated. Serafina was stripped of her family assets, her luxury penthouse lease revoked, and her passport seized by federal authorities after anonymous financial documents—the very kind she loved using to blackmail others—were delivered to the United States Attorney’s Office.

By midnight, Chicago’s dreaded “Viper” was nothing more than a disgraced, penniless socialite facing twenty years for tax evasion and racketeering, awaiting trial in a bleak county holding cell.

Meanwhile, forty miles north at Highland Park Hospital, the atmosphere was entirely different.

Hayley lay propped up against a mountain of pillows in a private maternity suite. The rhythmic, soothing thump-thump, thump-thump of Leo’s heartbeat echoed softly from the fetal monitor beside her bed.

Sal sat on a chair near the doorway, holding a plastic cup of lukewarm hospital coffee, looking thoroughly out of place among the pastel walls and nursery posters.

The heavy wooden door pushed open.

Anthony stepped inside. He had changed into a clean charcoal sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed, though a lingering exhaustion shadowed his eyes. He carried a massive bouquet of fresh sunflowers and a pink bakery box tied with string.

Hayley’s face lit up instantly. A wave of relief washed over her so strong that she felt her eyes welling with tears. “You’re okay.”

“I told you I’d be back in one piece,” Anthony smiled, setting the sunflowers on the nightstand and offering the box. “Cannolis from Ferrara’s on Taylor Street. The old man made them fresh twenty minutes ago.”

Hayley opened the box, the sweet scent of ricotta, cinnamon, and chocolate chips filling the room. “You’re trying to bribe me with pastries.”

“Is it working?”

“One hundred percent,” she laughed, grabbing one and taking a generous bite. A contented sigh escaped her lips. “Sal told me what happened. About Serafina. And the Boston boss.”

Anthony took the seat beside her bed, his gaze dropping to the monitor tracking the baby’s heartbeat. “It’s over, Hayley. For good. The people who threatened you are gone. You don't have to look over your shoulder anymore.”

Hayley stopped chewing. She looked at Anthony, really looked at him. Beneath the sharp jawline, the expensive clothes, and the tattoos, she saw a man who had carried the burdens of an entire empire on his shoulders since he was a boy.

“Anthony,” she said softly, setting the pastry down. “Why did you really come to my apartment that morning? You could have sent Sal. You could have sent any of your enforcers to pay off my landlord or run Marco out of town. Why did you come yourself?”

Anthony sat in silence for a long moment, staring down at his hands. The monitor chimed steadily in the background.

“Because for fifteen years, everyone around me has looked at me with two things: fear or greed,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Serafina looked at me and saw power she could leverage. My captains look at me and see paychecks. Rival bosses look at me and see a target.”

He raised his eyes to meet hers, completely unguarded. “That night at Carmine’s, when you stood there exhausted, with your feet aching, and pointed your finger at Serafina... you weren't afraid of the gun in my holster or the ring on my hand. You saw through all the bullshit. You treated me like a human being.”

Anthony reached out, his thumb gently brushing across her fingers resting on the white hospital sheet. “And when I saw your tiny apartment ransacked... I realized I didn't want to live in a world where good, honest people get crushed by monsters like Serafina while I do nothing. I wanted to protect something pure. Something real.”

Hayley’s heart fluttered, warm and full. She turned her hand over, intertwining her fingers with his calloused, ink-stained ones. “You built the crib wrong, you know. Panel B was definitely supposed to go into slot six.”

Anthony laughed softly, shaking his head. “I’ll tear it apart and rebuild it tonight if that’s what it takes.”

Suddenly, Hayley froze. A sharp, intense pressure seized her lower abdomen, taking the breath right out of her lungs. She gripped Anthony’s hand with surprising strength, a low gasp escaping her lips.

Anthony bolted upright, his eyes wide. “Hayley? What’s wrong? Is it the baby?”

May you like

Hayley looked down at the bedsheets, where a sudden rush of warm fluid was spreading across the linen. She looked up at the fearsome mob boss of Chicago, a wry, breathless grin spreading across her face.

“Well, Mr. Marletta,” Hayley gasped, bracing through another sudden contraction. “Looks like you’re not rebuilding that crib tonight. Leo decided he wants to meet you right now.”
