Chapter 5 - The Recording Nobody Was Supposed to Hear

Daniel Brooks had kept the original transmission log in a sealed metal case for twenty-eight years.
He had hidden it in a veterans' association archive under a false catalog number. The case also contained photographs, copies of handwritten orders, and a small recording device used by the unit's communications officer.
The recording had survived because the communications officer had activated it before the patrol began.
It contained a conversation between Anthony Moretti and Colonel Robert Sterling.
The first attempt to play the file failed.
The audio was damaged, and the investigators needed specialists to restore it.
Dominic waited in Margaret Shaw's office while Daniel paced the room.
“Twenty-eight years,” Daniel muttered. “I've carried that case through three homes, two hospital stays, and one retirement. I thought I'd die before anyone heard it.”
Dominic looked at him.
“You didn't fail my father.”
Daniel stopped.
“I was there. I survived. He lost everything.”
“He lost his career because men with power lied about him. That wasn't your fault.”
Daniel looked away.
Before the restored recording was ready, Vanessa arrived at the mansion.
Security stopped her at the gate.
She requested a meeting with Dominic and offered to surrender evidence against her father.
Dominic agreed, but only with his attorney and the investigators present.
Vanessa entered the study carrying the flash drive.
She looked thinner, frightened, and exhausted.
“I brought something that proves my father and Anthony worked together,” she said.
Dominic did not invite her to sit.
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because I'm done protecting them.”
“You were quite comfortable humiliating my father.”
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
“I know.”
“No, you don't. You treated a man who could barely speak as if his disability had made him less human.”
Her eyes filled.
“I was cruel.”
“Yes.”
He did not soften the truth for her.
Vanessa placed the drive on the desk.
“This contains financial records, private messages, and a video of my father discussing the military operation with Anthony. I copied it before he realized I'd taken it.”
Margaret Shaw instructed the investigators to secure the device and create a forensic copy.
Vanessa then handed over a handwritten note.
“My father told me to persuade you to discredit Daniel. He wanted me to say the recording was fake.”
Dominic looked at her.
“And you came here instead.”
“I couldn't do it.”
“Why now?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because I saw Michael crying. I thought he was pathetic because he couldn't defend himself. But he was carrying a secret that protected a little girl for twenty-eight years. He was more honorable in his silence than I have been in my entire life.”
Dominic remained silent.
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I don't expect you to forgive me. I don't expect you to marry me. I only want to stop helping my father.”
“Then tell the truth to the investigators. All of it.”
She nodded.
The restored recording arrived later that evening.
The communications officer's voice was heard first, identifying the date and the participants.
Then Anthony spoke.
“Once the route is changed, the patrol will be exposed.”
Robert Sterling answered, “And Moretti will take the blame?”
“He signed the original plan. The revised order will carry his authorization.”
“He'll deny it.”
“Then we'll destroy his reputation. Nobody will believe a disgraced officer over us.”
A third voice entered the recording.
It belonged to a man whose identity the investigators had not yet established.
“What about the baby?”
Anthony replied, “Michael has the child. If he exposes us, we'll tell the world he stole her from a dead soldier.”
Robert laughed.
“And if he stays silent?”
“Then the child stays hidden, Michael stays disgraced, and we keep control.”
The recording continued.
“Thomas Reed knew too much,” Anthony said. “The ambush will solve that problem.”
Daniel abruptly turned away.
He had heard the names before, but hearing Anthony discuss Thomas's death so casually was another kind of pain.
Dominic closed his eyes.
His uncle had helped raise him while knowing that the same conspiracy had destroyed his father's life.
Margaret Shaw looked at the investigators.
“This is significant evidence. The original transmission log, the audio, and the financial records should be sufficient to justify further charges, subject to authentication.”
Dominic looked toward the door.
“Where is Anthony now?”
The lead investigator answered, “We believe he is preparing to leave the country.”
Dominic stood.
“Then we need to make sure he doesn't.”
“You will not approach him,” the investigator said firmly. “We have enough evidence to act. Let us handle the arrest.”
Dominic reluctantly sat down.
He wanted to face his uncle.

But he knew that the truth would matter only if it could survive a courtroom.
For the first time, he would fight his family's enemies without becoming what they were.
