Chapter 1 - The Wedding That Never Happened

“SHE'S NOT GOING TO RUIN MY WEDDING PHOTOS!” THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE SCREAMED AS SHE LOCKED HIS SIX-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER OUTSIDE THE BRIDAL DRESSING ROOM. BUT WHEN A MAID BROUGHT THE CRYING LITTLE GIRL INTO THE CEREMONY, THE CHILD WAS HOLDING HER DEAD MOTHER'S WEDDING VEIL—AND A LETTER THAT MADE THE GROOM STOP THE WEDDING.

“Please, Vanessa. Daddy said I could walk with him.”

Sophie Moretti stood in the hallway of the grand wedding estate, clutching a folded white veil.

Her little flower-girl dress was wrinkled.

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

Vanessa Sterling stood in the doorway of the bridal dressing room, wearing a magnificent ivory gown.

“You've already been told. You're not in the wedding pictures.”

Sophie sniffled.

“But I'm Daddy's daughter.”

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“AND TODAY IS ABOUT ME. NOT YOU.”

She pushed the dressing-room door shut and turned the lock, leaving Sophie alone in the corridor.

The little girl knocked softly.

“Please. I have something for Daddy.”

No answer.

Sophie sank onto a bench.

She hugged the veil against her chest.

Her grandmother had given it to her that morning.

Along with a sealed envelope.

Give this to Daddy before he gets married, Grandma had whispered.

Your mommy wanted him to have it.

Sophie had promised.

But Vanessa had seen the envelope.

And the moment she'd recognized the handwriting, she'd ordered Sophie to stay away from the ceremony.

Now the little girl sat crying outside the dressing room.

Until Hannah Reed, the household maid, came around the corner.

“Sophie?”

The child looked up.

“Hannah… Vanessa said Daddy doesn't want me in the pictures.”

Hannah knelt beside her.

“Who told you that?”

“Vanessa.”

Hannah's expression changed.

She knew Dominic Moretti had personally chosen Sophie's flower-girl dress.

He had even practiced walking down the aisle with her the night before.

Hannah gently wiped the child's tears.

“Your father is waiting for you, sweetheart.”

Sophie shook her head.

“Vanessa said he'll be angry if I go inside.”

Hannah noticed the old veil in her arms.

“What's that?”

“Mommy's wedding veil.”

Hannah froze.

Sophie showed her the envelope.

“Grandma said Mommy wrote this before she went away.”

Hannah looked at the handwriting.

Then toward the wedding hall.

“Come with me.”

Inside, more than a hundred guests waited beneath crystal chandeliers.

Dominic Moretti stood at the altar in a black tuxedo.

Vanessa had already joined him.

The officiant opened his book.

“Dearly beloved—”

“MR. MORETTI, PLEASE WAIT!”

Every head turned.

Hannah stood at the entrance.

Holding Sophie's hand.

Vanessa's face went white.

“Hannah! What are you doing?”

Hannah stepped forward.

“Sir, your daughter has been waiting outside.”

Dominic frowned.

“Outside? Why?”

Sophie saw her father.

“Daddy!”

She ran toward him.

Dominic immediately knelt and caught her in his arms.

“Princess, what's wrong?”

Sophie began sobbing.

“Vanessa said I couldn't come because I'd ruin the pictures.”

The ballroom fell silent.

Dominic slowly looked up.

“Vanessa?”

His bride forced a laugh.

“Oh, darling. She's confused. I only wanted her to wait until after the ceremony.”

Hannah spoke firmly.

“Sir, she was crying alone in the hallway. Mrs. Sterling had locked the dressing-room door and told her not to enter.”

Dominic's expression hardened.

“You left my daughter outside?”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Dominic, don't make a scene.”

He stood, keeping Sophie beside him.

“YOU MADE MY DAUGHTER CRY ON OUR WEDDING DAY. EXPLAIN THAT.”

Vanessa opened her mouth.

But Sophie tugged at her father's sleeve.

“Daddy, I brought you something.”

Dominic looked down.

She carefully unfolded the white lace veil.

His breath caught.

He recognized it.

His first wife, Elena, had worn that exact veil when they married.

Before she disappeared four years earlier.

Dominic touched the lace.

“Where did you get this?”

“Grandma gave it to me.”

Vanessa suddenly reached for the veil.

“That belongs in storage!”

Sophie pulled it against her chest.

“No! Mommy wanted Daddy to have it!”

Dominic caught Vanessa's wrist before she could grab it.

“Don't touch her.”

Vanessa froze.

Then Sophie held out the envelope.

Her small fingers trembled.

“Daddy, Mommy wrote this before she went away.”

Dominic stared.

His daughter's words seemed to stop time.

Elena had vanished without saying goodbye.

For four years, Dominic had believed she'd abandoned him and their little girl.

He had searched everywhere.

Eventually, Vanessa convinced him to move on.

Now he was holding a letter in Elena's handwriting.

“Where did Grandma find this?”

Sophie sniffled.

“Inside Mommy's veil. She said it was sewn into the lining.”

Hannah gently added:

“Sir, Mrs. Sterling tried to take the envelope from Sophie before the ceremony.”

Dominic slowly turned toward his bride.

“Why?”

Vanessa's lips trembled.

“Dominic, that letter is old. It doesn't matter anymore.”

He looked at the envelope.

“THEN WHY WERE YOU SO DESPERATE TO KEEP IT FROM ME?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Dominic broke the seal.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

My dearest Dominic,

If you are reading this, then something has happened that prevented me from telling you the truth myself.

I never wanted to leave you.

And I would never willingly abandon Sophie.

Dominic's hands began shaking.

He continued reading.

Someone has been threatening me.

I discovered documents that could destroy everything your family has built.

I wanted to tell you, but I was afraid you wouldn't believe me.

Dominic swallowed hard.

He remembered Elena trying to speak with him the week before she vanished.

He had been too busy.

Too distracted.

And Vanessa had told him Elena was simply unhappy.

He looked at the final paragraph.

If I disappear, please don't believe anyone who says I left because I stopped loving you.

Ask Vanessa what she took from my bedroom the night before I vanished.

Dominic slowly raised his eyes.

Vanessa stumbled backward.

“No…”

He stepped toward her.

“WHAT DID YOU TAKE FROM ELENA'S BEDROOM?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“Dominic, please. You don't understand.”

Sophie suddenly spoke.

“Daddy?”

He turned.

The little girl pointed toward the veil.

“Grandma said there's another thing inside.”

Hannah carefully examined the lace lining.

A tiny pocket had been sewn beneath the embroidered flowers.

Inside was a small brass key.

And a folded photograph.

Dominic opened it.

The photograph showed Elena standing beside an unfamiliar woman outside a hospital.

On the back, written in Elena's handwriting, were four words:

SHE KNOWS WHERE I'M GOING.

Dominic stared at the photograph.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Then Sophie whispered:

“Daddy… Grandma said that lady came to see Mommy the day before she disappeared.”

Dominic looked at Vanessa.

“Do you know this woman?”

Vanessa began crying.

He held up the photograph.

“VANESSA! LOOK AT ME! WHO IS SHE?”

Vanessa's voice broke.

“Dominic… if you find that woman, you'll discover why Elena really left.”

The entire wedding hall fell silent.

Dominic took off the wedding ring he'd been preparing to place on Vanessa's finger.

Then he looked at his daughter.

“Sweetheart, you're coming with me.”

Vanessa grabbed his arm.

“DOMINIC, PLEASE! YOU CAN'T GO LOOKING FOR ELENA!”

He froze.

Slowly, he turned.

“Why not?”

Vanessa stared at the letter.

And whispered something that made his blood run cold.
