Chapter 8 - The Price of Betrayal

Warehouse 12 stood beside the Hudson like a rusted skeleton.

Damian arrived with Harper.

Salvatore had demanded he come alone.

Damian had interpreted that creatively.

His men surrounded the waterfront from three blocks away.

Inside, Claudia sat tied to a chair.

Richard Vale stood behind her.

Salvatore stood beside him.

"Family reunion," Harper whispered.

Richard smiled.

"Miss Reed."

"You framed me badly."

His smile disappeared.

Damian held up the drive.

"Release Claudia."

"Give me the archive."

"Her first."

Salvatore laughed.

"You still negotiate like your father."

Damian's eyes hardened.

"Thank you."

That insult landed.

Richard shoved Claudia forward.

Damian tossed the drive across the concrete.

Salvatore caught it.

Claudia ran toward Harper.

Then Richard raised his gun.

"Harper!"

Claudia shoved her.

The shot missed.

Chaos erupted.

Damian's men breached the warehouse.

Richard ran.

Salvatore fired toward Damian.

Claudia screamed.

Harper dragged her behind machinery.

Damian pursued Salvatore through the loading area.

They disappeared onto the dock.

Harper saw Richard escaping toward a car.

She could have hidden.

Instead, she grabbed Claudia's phone.

"Can you livestream?"

Claudia stared at her.

"What?"

"Your father built his career on public image."

Understanding appeared.

Claudia opened her social account.

They went live.

Then Claudia stepped into the open.

"Father!"

Richard stopped.

The phone recorded everything.

"You ruined my life!" Claudia shouted.

Richard looked around.

"Turn that off."

"You ordered me to kill Harper."

"Claudia."

"You murdered Vittorio Costa."

His expression changed.

"Turn it off."

"You framed Harper."

"TURN IT OFF!"

Thousands were already watching.

Richard charged toward them.

Harper kept the camera raised.

"Tell them why."

Richard grabbed Claudia.

"Because everything I built was going to disappear because of that filthy Costa family!"

Harper's heart pounded.

"Everything?"

"Vittorio had evidence. Evelyn stole it. Damian found it. And you stupid women couldn't do one simple thing!"

Claudia stared at her father.

"You tried to kill me."

Richard froze.

Too late.

Police sirens approached.

Claudia smiled through tears.

"Thank you."

Richard realized.

The livestream.

He ran.

Federal agents intercepted him outside.

On the dock, Damian cornered Salvatore.

His uncle was wounded.

Damian could have killed him.

Everyone expected it.

Instead, Damian lowered his weapon.

"No."

Salvatore laughed.

"Weak. Just like Vittorio."

Damian looked toward Harper standing in the warehouse doorway.

"No."

His voice was calm.

"Free."

He allowed federal agents to take Salvatore alive.

The archive had already been transmitted to three law firms, two federal agencies, and a journalist.

Richard Vale's empire collapsed before sunrise.

So did much of the old Costa organization.

Damian stood beside the river afterward.

Harper approached.

"It's over."

"No."

She knew what he meant.

The evidence implicated Costa companies too.

Damian could destroy it.

Instead, he handed the complete archive to federal investigators.

"What happens now?" Harper asked.

"I lose businesses. Money. Possibly people I thought were loyal."

"Regret it?"

He looked at her.

"No."

Harper slipped her hand into his.

Damian squeezed it.

Behind them, Claudia watched.

For the first time, there was no hatred in her expression.

Only exhaustion.

May you like

And perhaps the beginning of something none of them had expected.

Freedom.
