Chapter 1 - The Key That Should Have Been Lost

"# THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE FORCED HIS FATHER TO EAT FROM THE FLOOR—THEN THE MAID CALMLY PUT THE SPOON IN HER HAND
“IF YOU'RE TOO USELESS TO FEED YOURSELF, EAT OFF THE FLOOR!” THE MAFIA BOSS'S FIANCÉE SCREAMED, THROWING HIS PARALYZED FATHER'S DINNER ONTO THE MARBLE. BUT WHEN A YOUNG MAID REFUSED TO LET THE OLD MAN BE HUMILIATED, THE FIANCÉE RAISED HER HAND TO SLAP HER. THE MAFIA BOSS WALKED IN AND STOPPED HER—THEN HIS FATHER DID SOMETHING NO ONE EXPECTED. HE PLACED THE KEY TO THE FAMILY'S MOST IMPORTANT SAFE INTO THE MAID'S HAND.
“PICK IT UP YOURSELF!”
Vanessa Sterling kicked the silver dinner tray across the marble floor.
A bowl of soup shattered.
Mashed potatoes splattered against the leg of a wheelchair.
Seventy-eight-year-old Giovanni Moretti flinched.
His trembling hands rested uselessly on his lap.
Three years earlier, a devastating stroke had left him paralyzed on his right side.
He could barely speak.
And he could no longer feed himself without assistance.
Vanessa stood over him in a crimson evening gown.
“Look at you,” she sneered. “The great Giovanni Moretti. Once the most powerful man in New York. Now you can't even hold a spoon.”
Giovanni lowered his eyes.
Vanessa leaned closer.
“GO AHEAD. EAT IT OFF THE FLOOR.”
The old man's lips trembled.
He tried to move his left hand.
It barely lifted.
Vanessa laughed.
“Pathetic.”
“Mrs. Sterling.”
A calm voice came from the doorway.
Hannah Carter, a twenty-five-year-old maid, stood holding a fresh linen napkin.
She had worked at the Moretti mansion for only three months.
But she had already learned one important thing.
Giovanni understood far more than people believed.
“Mr. Giovanni needs his dinner,” Hannah said gently.
Vanessa turned.
“Then let him eat.”
Hannah glanced at the food scattered across the floor.
Without arguing, she walked to the sideboard.
She collected a clean spoon and a fresh bowl from the service cart.
Then placed them on the empty tray.
Vanessa folded her arms.
“Didn't you hear me?”
Hannah looked at Giovanni.
“SIR, I'LL HELP YOU.”
The old man's eyes filled with tears.
Hannah knelt beside his wheelchair.
“Let's get you cleaned up first.”
She carefully wiped the food from his blanket.
Giovanni looked at her with quiet gratitude.
Vanessa marched toward them.
“I DIDN'T GIVE YOU PERMISSION TO TOUCH HIM!”
Hannah continued cleaning.
“He needs help, ma'am.”
“He needs to learn not to make a mess!”
Hannah paused.
Then looked up.
“With respect, Mrs. Sterling, he didn't make this mess.”
Vanessa froze.
“What did you say?”
Hannah remained composed.
“The tray fell because you kicked it.”
The room went silent.
Vanessa's face turned red.
“HOW DARE YOU CORRECT ME!”
She raised her hand to slap Hannah.
But before her palm could fall, a man's hand closed around her wrist.
“DON'T.”
Vanessa gasped.
Lorenzo Moretti stood behind her.
Thirty-eight years old, tall and broad-shouldered, he wore a tailored black suit.
The feared mafia boss had returned home from a business meeting earlier than expected.
And he had witnessed everything.
He released Vanessa's wrist.
Then stepped between her and the maid.
“Lorenzo!” Vanessa exclaimed. “Thank goodness you're here!”
He didn't answer.
His eyes moved toward the broken bowl.
The food on the marble.
His father's trembling hands.
And Hannah kneeling beside the wheelchair.
His expression hardened.
“YOU THREW MY FATHER'S DINNER ON THE FLOOR?”
Vanessa forced a laugh.
“Darling, he was being difficult.”
Lorenzo stared at her.
“Difficult?”
“He kept spilling things!”
Lorenzo looked at Giovanni.
The old man was staring at the floor.
For a moment, Lorenzo saw something he hadn't seen since childhood.
Shame.
His father was ashamed.
Lorenzo slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“APOLOGIZE TO HIM.”
Vanessa blinked.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
She laughed nervously.
“Lorenzo, don't be ridiculous.”
His voice dropped.
“YOU WILL APOLOGIZE TO MY FATHER.”
Vanessa glanced toward Hannah.
“Not in front of a servant!”
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“Especially in front of her.”
Vanessa's smile disappeared.
“I'm your fiancée!”
“And he's my father.”
She folded her arms.
“I'm not apologizing to a man who doesn't even understand what happened!”
Lorenzo's expression turned cold.
“HE UNDERSTANDS EVERY WORD.”
Giovanni slowly raised his eyes.
Lorenzo knelt beside him.
“Dad.”
The old man looked at his son.
“I'm sorry I wasn't here.”
Giovanni's lips trembled.
Lorenzo gently touched his shoulder.
“No one will ever treat you like that again.”
Hannah quietly stood.
“I'll prepare another meal, sir.”
Lorenzo looked at her.
“Thank you, Hannah.”
She nodded.
But before she could leave, Giovanni made a faint sound.
“Ah…”
Hannah stopped.
“Mr. Giovanni?”
The old man moved his left hand.
Slowly.
Painfully.
He reached toward her.
Lorenzo frowned.
“Dad?”
Giovanni's fingers caught the edge of Hannah's apron.
She immediately stepped closer.
“Do you need something?”
The old man shook his head.
Then reached beneath the blanket covering his legs.
Lorenzo watched carefully.
Giovanni had been hiding something inside a small fabric pouch attached to his wheelchair.
His trembling fingers struggled with the opening.
Hannah knelt beside him.
“Would you like me to help?”
Giovanni nodded.
She gently opened the pouch.
Inside was a small brass key.
Old.
Heavy.
Its handle bore the Moretti family crest.
Lorenzo froze.
“DAD… WHERE DID YOU GET THAT?”
Giovanni ignored him.
He took the key with his left hand.
Then reached for Hannah.
The young maid opened her palm.
Giovanni carefully placed the key inside.
His fingers closed around hers.
For several seconds, he refused to let go.
Hannah stared at the object.
“Mr. Giovanni?”
Lorenzo slowly stood.
He recognized the key immediately.
It belonged to the family safe.
A massive steel vault hidden behind the bookshelves in Giovanni's private study.
The safe contained documents, property deeds, and confidential records collected over four decades.
Only Giovanni had possessed the original key.
After his stroke, everyone believed it had been lost.
Lorenzo looked at Hannah.
“THAT KEY HAS BEEN MISSING FOR THREE YEARS.”
Hannah's eyes widened.
“I didn't know, sir.”
Giovanni tightened his grip around her hand.
Lorenzo stepped closer.
“Dad, why are you giving it to her?”
The old man looked directly at him.
Then slowly shook his head.
Lorenzo frowned.
“You don't want me to take it?”
Giovanni shook his head again.
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“GIVE ME THAT KEY!”
Hannah instinctively pulled her hand back.
Lorenzo turned.
“Vanessa.”
She stopped.
“It's a family heirloom! A servant shouldn't be holding it!”
Lorenzo stared at her.
“My father gave it to her.”
“He's confused!”
Giovanni struck the wheelchair armrest with his left hand.
THUD.
Everyone froze.
The old man's breathing grew heavier.
He looked at Vanessa with unmistakable anger.
Lorenzo slowly turned toward him.
“Dad?”
Giovanni pointed toward Hannah.
Then toward the key.
Then pressed his hand against his chest.
Lorenzo swallowed.
“Do you trust her?”
Giovanni nodded.
Once.
Firmly.
Hannah's eyes filled with tears.
“Mr. Giovanni…”
Vanessa stepped backward.
Lorenzo noticed.
“Why are you so upset about this key?”
Vanessa shook her head.
“I'm not!”
“Then why did you try to take it?”
“Because it belongs to your family!”
Lorenzo looked at Hannah.
The young maid stood quietly, holding the brass key.
“Have you ever seen this before?” he asked.
“No, sir.”
“Did my father tell you anything about the safe?”
Hannah hesitated.
“Not exactly.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“What does that mean?”
She glanced at Giovanni.
“For the past few weeks, he's been asking me to take him into his study.”
Vanessa went pale.
Lorenzo slowly turned.
“How?”
Hannah answered carefully.
“He points toward the hallway whenever I help him after dinner.”
“And?”
“Last Tuesday, I took him there.”
Vanessa suddenly interrupted.
“YOU HAD NO RIGHT TO ENTER THAT ROOM!”
Hannah remained calm.
“Mr. Giovanni asked me to, ma'am.”
Lorenzo looked at Vanessa.
“Why would that be a problem?”
She opened her mouth.
Then closed it.
Hannah continued.
“He kept pointing toward the bookshelf.”
Lorenzo's expression changed.
“The bookshelf hiding the safe?”
She nodded.
“But I didn't know what he wanted.”
Giovanni made another strained sound.
“Ah…”
Hannah looked toward him.
“Then yesterday, he asked me to bring him a photograph from his desk.”
Lorenzo frowned.
“What photograph?”
Hannah reached into her apron.
She removed a small folded picture.
It showed Giovanni standing beside a younger man in front of the Moretti mansion.
Lorenzo recognized the man immediately.
His late uncle, Antonio Moretti.
The brother who had supposedly betrayed the family twenty years earlier.
Lorenzo stared.
“Why would Dad want you to bring him this?”
Hannah shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Then she turned the photograph over.
On the back, written in faded blue ink, were five words.
THE TRUTH IS IN THE SAFE.
Lorenzo stopped breathing.
Vanessa stumbled backward.
“No…”
Lorenzo slowly looked at her.
“What?”
She shook her head.
“Nothing.”
But Giovanni had begun trembling again.
He pointed toward the photograph.
Then toward the key in Hannah's hand.
Lorenzo understood.
His father wanted the safe opened.
But for some reason, he didn't want the key placed in his son's hands.
He wanted Hannah to carry it.
Lorenzo knelt beside the wheelchair.
“Dad, listen to me.”
Giovanni looked at him.
“Is there something in that safe you need us to see?”
The old man nodded.
Lorenzo's heart began pounding.
“Something about Uncle Antonio?”
Giovanni closed his eyes.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
Vanessa suddenly grabbed Lorenzo's arm.
“Darling, this is ridiculous. Your father is exhausted. We should put him to bed.”
Lorenzo gently removed her hand.
“Not yet.”
He turned toward Hannah.
“Come with me.”
She hesitated.
“Sir?”
“We're going to my father's study.”
Vanessa's face drained of color.
“LORENZO, DON'T OPEN THAT SAFE!”
He stopped.
Slowly, he turned.
“Why?”
Vanessa swallowed.
“Because… because your father isn't thinking clearly!”
Lorenzo studied her.
“Then how do you know there's something inside worth hiding?”
Vanessa couldn't answer.
Behind them, Giovanni suddenly reached for Hannah's wrist.
She turned.
The old man gently pulled her closer.
His trembling fingers closed around the brass key.
Then he pushed it firmly into her palm again.
His eyes moved toward Lorenzo.
And he shook his head.
Lorenzo froze.
“Dad?”
Giovanni pointed at Hannah.
Then toward the hallway.
But when Lorenzo reached for the key, his father pulled Hannah's hand away.
The message was unmistakable.
THE MAID HAD TO OPEN THE SAFE.
Lorenzo stared at his father.
Then at Hannah.
She had worked in the mansion for only three months.
She had no family connection to the Morettis.
She had never been inside the private vault.
And yet Giovanni had just entrusted her with the most important key the family possessed.
Lorenzo looked at Vanessa.
For the first time, she was visibly terrified.
Then he turned back toward his father.
“DAD… WHY HER?”
Giovanni's lips trembled.
He tried to speak.
Only a faint breath escaped.
Hannah gently squeezed his hand.
“It's okay, sir.”
The old man's eyes filled with tears.
Lorenzo looked at the brass key resting in Hannah's palm.
And one question echoed through his mind.
