Chapter 2 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE SECOND BEAR

For three seconds, nobody moved.

The wedding guests sat frozen beneath the glittering chandeliers, their untouched plates forgotten. Somewhere near the windows, a waiter quietly set down a silver tray.

Luca Moretti heard none of it.

He saw only Vanessa.

The woman he had promised to marry stood in a white silk dress, staring at the photograph in his hand as though it were a loaded gun.

“Everyone out,” Luca ordered.

His voice was calm.

That frightened his men more than shouting would have.

Chairs scraped backward. Guests hurried toward the doors, avoiding his eyes. Within minutes, only Luca, Sophie, Emma, Rachel, and Vanessa remained.

Luca turned to his security chief.

“Lock the gates. Nobody leaves until I know what happened here.”

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“You can't imprison me because a stranger told you a ridiculous story.”

“No,” Luca replied. “But I can ask why you lied about being overseas when my wife died.”

“I told you, I can explain.”

“Then start explaining.”

Vanessa looked toward Sophie.

“Not in front of the child.”

Sophie immediately pressed herself against Emma.

“Don't make me leave with her, Daddy.”

Luca's expression changed.

“You're not going anywhere with Vanessa.”

For the first time that evening, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.

Rachel placed the second teddy bear on the table.

“There's something you need to understand. Elena knew she was in danger before the accident.”

Luca stared at her.

“Why didn't she tell me?”

“She tried.”

Rachel reached into her coat and produced a small envelope. It had been folded so many times that its edges were nearly white.

“Three days before the crash, she came to the hospital where I worked. She was carrying these two bears and asked me to hide something for her.”

“What?”

“A memory card. She said it contained evidence that someone close to your family was arranging the sale of confidential information about your organization.”

Luca's jaw tightened.

His criminal empire had survived assassinations, betrayals, and two bloody wars. He had spent years hunting for the person leaking his shipping schedules to a rival family.

He had never suspected Elena was investigating the same mystery.

Rachel continued.

“She said if anything happened to her, I was supposed to find her daughter and give you the evidence only when it was safe.”

“Why didn't you come sooner?”

“Because I was threatened. Two men followed me home the night Elena disappeared. They burned my apartment and told me I would be next.”

Emma went pale.

“You've been hiding for three years?”

Rachel nodded.

“I spent the first year trying to find out what happened to Elena. The next two trying to stay alive.”

Luca turned toward Vanessa.

“And you?”

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“I loved you.”

“That's not an answer.”

She glanced at the second bear.

“I took something from it.”

“What?”

“A key.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Luca stepped forward.

“Where is it?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“Gone.”

He struck the table with his palm. Sophie flinched.

Immediately, Luca crouched beside her.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart. I won't shout again.”

He waited until she nodded before standing.

“Vanessa. Where is the key?”

She swallowed.

“I gave it to your father.”

The room went silent.

Luca's father, Salvatore Moretti, had died eighteen months earlier. His funeral had been attended by senators, judges, businessmen, and men who never appeared in photographs.

“You're saying my father knew Elena was alive?”

“I don't know if he knew she was alive,” Vanessa whispered. “He told me the key was insurance. He said if I kept quiet, I'd become part of the family.”

Luca stared at her.

“What did he promise you?”

“The marriage. Control of the charitable foundation. Access to the family accounts.”

“And what did you promise him?”

Vanessa's silence answered.

Rachel suddenly seized the photograph.

“Wait. Look at the date.”

Luca examined the handwriting on the back.

Beneath Elena's message, almost invisible under a crease, was a series of numbers.

April 17, 2005.

Rachel began trembling.

“That isn't a date.”

“What is it?” Emma asked.

Rachel looked at Sophie.

“It's a patient identification number from the hospital's old maternity wing.”

Luca felt his stomach turn.

His daughter had been born six years earlier.

The number belonged to a record created long before Elena's supposed death.

Rachel reached for her bag.

“I have a copy of that record. I thought it was unrelated until I saw the photograph.”

She pulled out a folded page.

The name at the top had been partially damaged by water.

But the mother's name remained legible.

ELENA MORETTI.

And beneath it, in the space reserved for the second parent, was a name Luca had not seen in years.

SALVATORE MORETTI.

Luca stared at the paper.

His father had been listed as the father of a child born before Luca and Elena married.

Vanessa began backing toward the door.

Rachel caught her wrist.

“You knew about this, didn't you?”

Vanessa ripped her arm free.

“I knew there was a child.”

Luca's blood ran cold.

“Whose child?”

Vanessa looked at Sophie.

Then she whispered, “Your father's.”

Before Luca could respond, a gunshot shattered the dining room window.

Emma screamed.

Rachel threw herself over Sophie.

Luca pulled his daughter behind the table as his security team rushed inside.

When the smoke cleared, Vanessa was gone.

On the floor beside the broken window lay a single white rose.

Pinned to its stem was a note.

Luca read it once.

Then again.
