Chapter 10 - THE FIRST SOUND THAT BROUGHT THEM HOME

|
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Dante stared at Alessia as though the woman standing before him might disappear if he blinked.
"You're alive."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I am."
He stepped toward her.
She raised one hand.
"Not yet."
The words stopped him.
"Alessia, I buried you."
"I know."
"I watched them lower an empty coffin because they told me there was nothing left to identify."
"I know."
"Six months."
Her face crumpled.
"I know, Dante."
He looked at the child in Isabella's arms.
Then back at his wife.
"Why?"
Alessia explained that the explosion had been planned to kill both her and Leo.
She had escaped through a service corridor with help from a hospital employee.
The body recovered after the blast belonged to someone else.
She had been injured and hidden in a private clinic under an assumed identity.
She couldn't contact Dante because Bellini had threatened to kill Leo if she revealed herself.
When she finally learned that her husband had taken Leo to Italy, she tried to reach him.
But Isabella had already taken control of the estate's communications.
"She told me you were dead," Alessia said. "She told me Leo had been diagnosed with profound hearing loss and that you refused to let anyone investigate."
Dante looked toward his sister.
Isabella lowered her head.
"I was trying to protect the family."
"No," Alessia replied. "You were protecting yourself."
Then she turned toward Clare.
"You saved my son."
Clare shook her head.
"I only fed him."
"You did more than that. You noticed things nobody else questioned."
Dante finally reached for his wife.
This time, Alessia didn't stop him.
He held her as though six months of grief had collapsed into a single moment.
But the reunion didn't last.
A phone rang.
Marco answered.
His face changed.
"Sir, Richard has been located."
"Where?"
"At the private marina."
"Send everyone."
Marco hesitated.
"There's another issue."
Dante turned.
"What?"
"He's not alone."
Richard had taken Maya.
Clare felt her knees weaken.
"Where is my daughter?"
Marco showed her the message.
A photograph displayed Maya sitting inside a small room.
Her stuffed rabbit was beside her.
Underneath was a location and a deadline.
BRING THE BABY. COME ALONE.
Dante looked at Clare.
"We'll get her back."
She grabbed his arm.
"Don't let him hurt her."
"I won't."
Alessia stepped forward.
"Richard wants Leo because he believes the medical records contain proof of something. But he doesn't understand that Bellini kept the real evidence somewhere else."
"Where?" Dante demanded.
"The original nursery."
Dante frowned.
"The hospital?"
Alessia nodded.
"There's a locked cabinet beneath the old maternity wing. Bellini kept the original recordings there. They contain the names of every child involved in the exchange."
Marco looked toward the door.
"Then we have a problem."
"Why?"
"The hospital is being evacuated."
Dante immediately understood.
Richard was trying to destroy the evidence.
He turned to Marco.
"Get the cars."
Clare reached for Leo.
"I want to hold him."
Dante handed the baby to her.
Leo looked up.
His tiny fingers curled around her hand.
She whispered to him.
"Your sister is waiting for you, sweetheart."
For the first time, Leo turned toward the sound of her voice.
Clare froze.
Dante noticed.
"Did he...?"
Dr. Ricci, who had arrived moments earlier, stepped closer.
"Let's not assume anything. But he may be responding to her voice."
She gently tapped a small bell.
Leo blinked.
Then he turned his head.
Dante covered his mouth.
His son might finally be hearing.
They reached the marina shortly before midnight.
Richard was waiting beside a private yacht.
Maya sat on a bench near him.
Clare rushed forward.
"Maya!"
The little girl began crying.
"Mommy!"
Richard caught her arm.
"Not so fast."
Dante raised his weapon.
"Let her go."
Richard smiled.
"Give me Leo."
"No."
"Then your daughter stays with me."
Clare stepped forward.
"Richard, please. She's three years old."
He looked at her.
"You should have listened to me."
"I was afraid of you."
"Good. You should have been."
Dante moved slightly to the left.
Marco's men were positioning themselves behind the yacht.
Richard noticed.
"Don't try it."
He pressed a remote control.
A small device attached to the yacht began blinking.
Alessia stepped forward.
"Richard, the evidence is already gone."
He turned.
"You're supposed to be dead."
"Disappointed?"
Richard's expression twisted.
"You destroyed everything."
"No," Alessia replied. "You did."
She held up a small flash drive.
"The original recordings. Every payment. Every falsified diagnosis. Every name."
Richard looked at it.
For the first time, he seemed uncertain.
Dante saw the opening.
He moved.
Marco's men rushed forward.
Richard released Maya.
Clare caught her daughter and held her tightly.
The remote fell into the water.
Richard was arrested before he could reach the yacht.
As officers secured him, he began laughing.
"You think this is over?"
Dante approached.
"You're finished."
Richard looked directly at Clare.
"You still don't know what happened to the first child."
Clare tightened her arms around Maya.
"What child?"
Richard smiled.
"The girl who was registered under your name six months ago."
Clare went cold.
"What are you talking about?"
Richard leaned closer.
"Ask Alessia who gave birth in Ohio three years ago."
Then the officers pulled him away.
The following weeks brought changes none of them had imagined.
The original medical records were recovered.
Dr. Bellini's fraud was exposed.
The falsified hearing assessments were confirmed, and Leo began receiving appropriate treatment from an independent medical team.
The doctors cautioned Dante that his son's hearing abilities would require continued assessment and support.
But Leo was responding to certain sounds.
And every time Dante spoke to him, the baby seemed increasingly interested in the voice he had once believed his son could never hear.
Dante also began rebuilding his relationship with Alessia.
It wasn't simple.
Six months of lies had created wounds that couldn't disappear overnight.
But they started again.
Not as the powerful couple everyone admired.
As two exhausted parents who had nearly lost their child.
Clare was offered a permanent position managing the family's private childcare and medical support program.
She refused the title of employee.
Instead, Dante offered her something different.
A chance to help establish a foundation providing legal assistance, housing, and medical support to mothers escaping abusive relationships.
Clare accepted.
She also began studying to return to nursing.
For the first time in years, her future belonged to her.
Maya continued visiting Leo.
She called him her little brother, although nobody had formally given her that title.
And Leo seemed to recognize her voice.
One afternoon, several months later, the family gathered in the garden.
Dante sat beside Alessia.
Clare watched Maya playing with Leo on a blanket.
The little boy suddenly dropped his toy.
It landed on the stone patio with a small clatter.
Leo turned his head.
Dante leaned forward.
"Leo?"
The baby looked toward him.
Dante swallowed.
"Can you hear me, son?"
Leo blinked.
Then he made a small sound.
A soft, uncertain babble.
Dante's eyes filled.
Alessia covered her mouth.
Clare smiled.
"He's trying to answer you."
Dante picked up his son.
"That's right, little man. I'm here."
Leo touched his father's face.
Then, unexpectedly, he made another sound.
It wasn't a word.
It wasn't even clear speech.
But it was enough.
Dante laughed through his tears.
For the first time since Alessia's death, the estate was filled with something other than fear.
It was filled with life.
Later that evening, Clare received a package at her apartment.
There was no return address.
Inside was an old photograph.
It showed a newborn girl in a hospital bassinet.
On the back, someone had written:
MAYA JENSEN — BIOLOGICAL MOTHER CONFIRMED.
Clare stared at the photograph.
Maya had been born three years earlier.
She knew that.
But the photograph showed a hospital bracelet with a number she had never seen.
Beneath it was a second photograph.
A woman stood outside the maternity ward.
Clare recognized her immediately.
Vanessa Cole.
But Vanessa wasn't alone.
Beside her stood a man wearing a wedding ring.
A man whose face Clare had seen only in old family photographs.
Her father.
The man she had been told died when she was a child.
Clare turned the photograph over.
Three words were written in black ink.
HE IS ALIVE.
Her phone rang.
An unknown number appeared.
She answered cautiously.
A man's voice spoke.
"Clare, I know what Richard told you."
Her fingers tightened around the photograph.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then the man whispered:
"I'm the reason your daughter was born."
The call ended.
Across the city, Dante received a separate message.
It contained a photograph of Leo sleeping in his crib.
The caption read:
YOU SAVED THE WRONG CHILD.
Dante immediately called Marco.
But before the bodyguard could answer, another message arrived.
This one contained a photograph of Alessia.
She was standing outside a hospital.
And beside her was a little girl wearing a pale blue coat.
A girl who looked exactly like Maya.
Dante stared at the screen.
Then he looked toward the garden, where Clare was laughing with his wife and children.
For the first time, he understood.
The conspiracy surrounding Leo had never been the entire story.
Someone had deliberately brought Clare and her daughter into his life.
And whoever had arranged it knew exactly what would happen aboard that airplane.
The baby had stopped crying.
May you like
But the truth had only just begun to speak.
