Chapter 9 - The Last Door

The Moretti estate was surrounded by police before midnight.

Luca arrived with Isabella, Clara, and Marco.

The house looked exactly as it had three years earlier.

But now every hallway felt haunted.

Luca walked upstairs.

Isabella held Clara's hand.

“Where did Mommy hide it?”

The little girl pointed toward her old bedroom.

They entered.

Everything was untouched.

The locked cabinet.

The bed.

The pink curtains.

The stuffed animals.

Clara noticed a small crack behind the headboard.

She moved it.

A hidden compartment appeared.

Inside was a recording.

Elena's final message.

Luca pressed play.

His wife's face appeared on the screen.

She looked tired.

But she smiled.

“If you're watching this, then Isabella remembered.”

Luca's eyes filled with tears.

“Elena…”

She continued.

“I need you to listen before you do anything.”

The recording showed Elena sitting in the same bedroom.

“Adrian isn't the real mastermind.”

Luca froze.

“He works for someone else.”

Clara leaned closer.

Elena continued.

“Someone who has spent years manipulating your family.”

The screen changed.

A photograph appeared.

Victor.

Adrian.

Luca's mother.

And another person.

Luca stared.

His own uncle.

“Uncle Thomas.”

Marco whispered,

“He was supposed to be in Florida.”

Elena's voice continued.

“Thomas planned everything. He wanted Luca's empire. Adrian handled the legal side. Victor handled the violence. Your mother was blackmailed into helping them.”

Luca's face hardened.

“Where is Thomas?”

A voice answered from the doorway.

“Right here.”

Everyone turned.

Thomas stood holding a gun.

Adrian was beside him.

Clara stepped in front of Isabella.

Thomas smiled.

“You finally figured it out.”

Luca stared at him.

“You killed Elena.”

Thomas shook his head.

“Adrian did.”

“You ordered it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because your father left everything to you.”

Thomas laughed bitterly.

“You were twenty-eight. A reckless boy. I was the one who built half the empire.”

“You stole from me.”

“I deserved it.”

Luca stepped forward.

Thomas raised the gun.

“Stop.”

Isabella whispered,

“Daddy.”

Luca looked at her.

Then at Thomas.

“You don't have to do this.”

Thomas laughed.

“You think you're better than me?”

“No.”

Luca lowered his weapon.

“I think I'm done being you.”

Thomas hesitated.

That was enough.

Clara grabbed Isabella and moved behind the bed.

Marco tackled Adrian.

Luca lunged at Thomas.

The gun fired.

The bullet struck the wall.

Luca slammed Thomas to the floor.

They fought brutally.

But Luca stopped before delivering the final blow.

Police stormed the room.

Thomas was arrested.

Adrian was arrested.

Victor, who had survived his injuries, agreed to testify.

The conspiracy that had haunted the Moretti family for years finally collapsed.

Weeks later, the Moretti empire began changing.

Luca sold the nightclubs connected to criminal operations.

He shut down illegal businesses.

He turned several properties into legitimate companies.

He cooperated with federal investigators.

Chicago newspapers called it the fall of the Moretti dynasty.

Luca called it something else.

A beginning.

One evening, he stood outside Isabella's bedroom.

The old nine o'clock ritual.

Except this time, he didn't walk away.

He knocked.

“Can I come in?”

A small voice answered.

“Yes.”

Luca opened the door.

Isabella was sitting on the bed.

Clara was beside her.

Luca smiled.

“I brought something.”

He held up a box.

Isabella's eyes widened.

“Chocolate?”

“Yes.”

Clara laughed.

“See? He finally learned.”

Luca sat beside his daughter.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Isabella leaned against his shoulder.

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Are you sad?”

Luca looked at Clara.

Then back at his daughter.

“Sometimes.”

“Why?”

“Because I miss Mommy.”

Isabella nodded.

“I miss her too.”

She thought for a moment.

“But I think she's happy now.”

Luca swallowed.

“I think so too.”

Isabella smiled.

Then she asked the question he had secretly feared.

“Will you leave me too?”

Luca's eyes filled with tears.

“Never.”

She wrapped her arms around him.

And for the first time in three years, the house was filled with the sound of Isabella laughing.

But there was still one final secret.

Clara noticed it the next morning.

A letter had arrived.

No return address.

Only her name.

CLARA BENNETT.

Inside was a photograph of her father.

On the back were five words:

Your father didn't die accidentally.

Clara stared at the photograph.

Then looked toward Luca.

May you like

The past wasn't finished with them.

Not yet.
