Chapter 8 - The Man Who Taught Her Fear

Nora heard ringing.
Then Roman's voice.
“Nora.”
She opened her eyes.
Roman was on the floor.
Blood covered his shirt.
“No.”
She crawled toward him.
The bullet had entered his side.
Elias called for medical assistance.
Across the chapel, Adrian lay wounded but alive.
Julian had shot him through the leg.
Nora pressed both hands against Roman’s wound.
“Stay with me.”
Roman managed a grim smile.
“Wasn't planning on leaving.”
“You better not.”
“Is that an order?”
“Yes.”
“Terrifying.”
She laughed through tears.
Roman survived surgery.
Adrian survived too.
For the first time, Nora was glad.
Death would have been easy.
Adrian would instead wake surrounded by federal investigators, prosecutors, and enough evidence to ensure that his power ended publicly.
But Julian disappeared.
Again.
Eleanor blamed herself.
Nora did not.
Not anymore.
“Adrian did this.”
“I left Julian vulnerable.”
“And you spent eleven years trying to fix it.”
Eleanor cried.
Nora held her.
Forgiveness did not arrive instantly.
It came in pieces.
So did healing.
Three days later, Nora visited Roman.
He was awake.
Annoyed.
And trying to work from his hospital bed.
She removed the laptop from his hands.
“You've been shot.”
“I noticed.”
“You need rest.”
“I own the hospital.”
“That isn't medically relevant.”
Roman stared.
Nora stared back.
He surrendered the laptop.
“Cruel woman.”
She smiled.
Then saw his expression soften.
“What?”
“You smile more now.”
Nora's smile disappeared.
Roman regretted mentioning it.
“No. Keep doing that.”
She laughed.
He held out his hand.
Nora took it.
A month earlier, she could not tolerate an unexpected hand near her shoulder.
Now she leaned forward and kissed the most feared man in the city because she wanted to.
Progress could be strange.
Their peace lasted nine days.
Then the ledger vanished from federal evidence.
Elias delivered the news.
Roman stared at him.
“Impossible.”
“Apparently not.”
One federal agent was missing.
So was Julian.
Nora understood.
“He took it.”
Roman shook his head.
“Why?”
The answer arrived that evening.
Every major news organization received selected pages from Victor Blackmere’s ledger.
Judges resigned.
Two police officials were arrested.
Three businessmen disappeared overseas.
Investigations erupted.
Julian had not stolen the ledger to bury it.
He was exposing it.
But selectively.
“He's destroying everyone connected to Victor,” Roman said.
Eleanor went pale.
“That includes you.”
Roman nodded.
Then Nora realized something.
“And me.”
Eleanor looked at her.
Nora’s childhood trust had been funded through one of Victor’s shell companies.
On paper, Nora was a beneficiary.
Julian could make her look complicit.
At midnight, Nora’s photograph appeared across national news.
BLACKMERE MONEY TRAIL LEADS TO MYSTERY WOMAN.
Her fake identity collapsed.
Her real identity became public.
Naomi Mercer.
Daughter of Eleanor Vale.
Beneficiary of millions she had never known existed.
The internet decided she was a criminal before breakfast.
Nora stared at the television.
For years she had survived by disappearing.
Now millions knew her face.
Roman turned off the screen.
“We'll fight it.”
“How?”
“With facts.”
“People don't care about facts.”
“I do.”
She looked at him.
Roman continued.
“And the people who matter will.”
Then his phone rang.
Julian.
Nora answered.
“Why are you doing this?”
Her brother sounded exhausted.
“Because the Blackmere name destroys everything it touches.”
“You're a Blackmere too.”
Silence.
“That’s why I’m finishing what our mother started.”
“By destroying innocent people?”
“You aren't innocent.”
Nora flinched.
“You lived free while I was locked away.”
“I didn't live free.”
“You had her love.”
“I thought she was dead!”
Julian's breathing changed.
Nora continued.
“Adrian hurt me too.”
Silence.
“He told you I was protected. I wasn't.”
She swallowed.
“He hit me when I asked questions. Locked me inside when I tried to leave. Controlled every dollar. Every friend. Every phone call.”
Julian said nothing.
“He didn't choose you instead of me, Julian. He used both of us.”
The line remained silent for a long time.
Then Julian whispered:
“I don't know who I am without hating you.”
Nora cried.
“Then find out.”
The call ended.
Roman looked at her.
“Think he'll listen?”
“I don't know.”
Twenty minutes later, Elias rushed inside.
“Roman.”
He held up his phone.
The remaining ledger files had just been released publicly.
All of them.
Along with a recorded confession from Adrian.
And one final message from Julian.
Nora Vale was never part of Victor Blackmere’s organization. She was one of its victims.
Nora covered her mouth.
Roman read the final line.
Then his expression changed.
“What?”
He handed her the phone.
Tell my mother I’m sorry.
Nora's blood went cold.
Attached to the message were coordinates.

A bridge.
And Julian’s abandoned car had just been found there.
