Chapter 1 - STOP THAT PLANE!

"I stepped off a classified military transport and made my way straight to the ICU, where my wife lay with twenty-seven broken b0nes and a fractured skull. Outside her hospital room, her mother and six sisters stood smiling as if they were waiting for lunch to be served. The detective assigned to her case leaned closer and whispered, ""Captain, this family practically owns the entire county."" I looked through the glass at my wife's bruised, swollen face and replied, ""Good. My authority reaches far

"My husband publicly promised to pay for his first love’s education and her son’s future, then told me there was “no reason to rush” into having children—without knowing I was already pregnant with his baby. So I left. But when he finally learned the truth and discovered I was already on a plane bound for Switzerland, the same man who never wanted a child suddenly roared, “STOP THAT PLANE!”

My name is Claire Bennett Moretti.

Vincent Moretti was one of the most powerful men in Chicago. People feared him, obeyed him, and knew better than to challenge him.

I was his wife.

And I was pregnant.

He didn’t know yet.

I had been waiting for the right moment to tell him. I thought he would be happy.

Then came the party.

Vincent stepped toward the microphone beneath enormous crystal chandeliers while hundreds of wealthy guests watched.

“I have something important to announce.”

His eyes immediately found Sophia Carter.

His first love.

Her young son, Noah, stood beside her.

“I’m going to cover Sophia’s remaining education expenses,” Vincent said, “and Noah’s schooling. Tuition, future costs—whatever he needs.”

The room erupted in applause.

I stood beside my husband carrying his child while he publicly promised another woman’s son a secure future.

Then Vincent smiled at me.

“Claire understands why this matters to me.”

Every eye turned toward me.

I could have told him right there.

Instead, I smiled.

“That’s very generous.”

That night, after drinking too much, Vincent fell asleep beside me.

Then he whispered her name.

“Sophia.”

Not mine.

I placed a hand over my stomach and made my decision.

I was leaving.

The next morning, Sophia arrived with Noah.

From an upstairs window, I watched Vincent chase the boy across the lawn, laughing as he lifted him into the air.

Sophia stood nearby smiling.

They looked like a family.

My hand settled over my stomach.

Would he ever look at our baby that way?

That night, I asked him.

“Vincent, do you want children?”

“Our own?” he asked.

“Yes.”

He shrugged.

“I think things are fine the way they are. There’s no reason to rush.”

Something inside me went completely still.

The next morning, I told him I wanted a divorce.

He stared at me.

“This is about Sophia again.”

“No.”

“You’re jealous.”

“I want a divorce, Vincent.”

Then his phone rang.

Sophia.

He answered immediately.

“Noah fell?”

His entire expression changed.

“I’m coming.”

“Vincent, we’re not finished.”

“We’ll deal with this later.”

And he walked out.

Again.

I packed while he was gone.

Meanwhile, at the hospital, Vincent ran into a doctor who recognized him.

“Mr. Moretti, congratulations.”

“For what?”

The doctor looked confused.

“Your wife is pregnant.”

Vincent froze.

By the time he rushed home, I was gone.

My wedding ring sat beside the divorce papers.

He called my name through every room.

Then he called his assistant.

“Find my wife.”

Minutes later, the answer came.

“She’s at the airport.”

Vincent grabbed his keys.

Then his assistant added, “She’s already boarded a flight to Switzerland.”

Silence.

“The aircraft is preparing for departure.”

Vincent exploded.

“SHUT DOWN THE AIRPORT!”

His assistant hesitated.

“Sir—”

“STOP THAT PLANE!”

Vincent was shouting now.

“I DON’T CARE WHAT IT TAKES!”

He had told me there was no reason to rush into having children.

But now I was carrying his baby thousands of miles away.

And for the first time, Vincent Moretti sounded terrified.
