Chapter 7 - THE BETRAYAL AT THE GATES

Matteo arrived at the estate shortly before midnight.
He came alone, carrying a leather briefcase and wearing the same dark overcoat he had worn to Elena's funeral.
Alessandro met him in the great room.
“You've been difficult to reach,” Alessandro said.
Matteo smiled faintly.
“Travel has a way of complicating things.”
“Sit down.”
His uncle obeyed.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Alessandro placed the photograph of Elena and Sofia on the table.
Matteo looked at it.
His expression did not change.
“So you've met the girl.”
“She is my sister.”
“She is a complication.”
Alessandro leaned forward.
“Did you arrange my mother's death?”
Matteo sighed.
“Your mother was a difficult woman. She believed that honesty mattered more than survival.”
“Answer me.”
“I did not order anyone to kill Elena.”
“Did you know she was taken from the accident scene?”
Matteo's silence lasted too long.
Alessandro stood.
“You let me believe she died.”
“I let you believe what your father needed you to believe.”
The words struck harder than a confession.
“What does that mean?”
Matteo opened his briefcase.
Inside were old medical records, travel documents, and a series of photographs taken at a private clinic in Europe.
One showed Elena sitting in a garden.
She looked older, thinner, but unmistakably alive.
The date was eleven months after the supposed accident.
Alessandro felt his knees weaken.
“She survived?”
Matteo closed the briefcase.
“For a time.”
“Where is she?”
“I don't know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I expect you to understand that the world is not divided into the innocent and the guilty. Your mother discovered something dangerous. Your father believed that hiding her was the only way to keep her alive.”
“And Sofia?”
“Your father arranged for her to be raised elsewhere. He feared that if Matteo's enemies discovered her existence, she would become leverage.”
Alessandro stared at him.
“You keep speaking as though everyone had good intentions.”
Matteo's expression hardened.
“Your father was not a good man, Alessandro. But he loved your mother.”
“Then why didn't he bring her home?”
“Because the people who wanted her silenced were still watching.”
“Who?”
Matteo looked toward the windows.
“I never learned the full truth.”
Alessandro laughed bitterly.
“You have an answer for everything except the one question that matters.”
Matteo rose.
“Then ask yourself why your father never told you about the money he transferred after the accident. Ask yourself why he spent the final years of his life trying to buy silence from men he claimed to despise.”
He walked toward the door.
Alessandro stepped in front of him.
“You're not leaving.”
Matteo looked at him with something close to pity.
“You think keeping me here will give you answers. It won't.”
“Try me.”
For a moment, the old man seemed ready to speak.
Then the estate's security alarm sounded.
Dominic rushed into the room.
“Boss, we've lost contact with the east gate. Two vehicles have entered the grounds.”
Alessandro turned.
“Who authorized them?”
“No one.”
A crash sounded from the corridor.
Matteo moved suddenly, grabbing the briefcase.
Alessandro caught his arm.
“You knew this was coming.”
Matteo's face twisted.
“I warned you not to dig.”
“You brought them here.”
“No!”
The lights went out.
Shouts erupted from the hallway.
Alessandro pulled Matteo behind the stone fireplace as security personnel moved through the room. A second later, a gunshot echoed from upstairs.
Rosa.
Lily.
He ran.
He reached the second-floor corridor as Dominic emerged from the nursery carrying Lily.
The child was crying.
“Daddy!”
Alessandro took her into his arms.
“Where's Rosa?”
“She's in the room,” Dominic said. “She's safe.”
Alessandro rushed inside.
Rosa stood beside the bed, pale but unharmed. A broken window let in the cold night air.
She grabbed his arm.
“They were looking for Lily.”
“I know.”
“Who were they?”
“I don't know yet.”
Lily clung to his neck.
“Scary men.”
Alessandro pressed his cheek against her hair.
“I know, sweetheart. You're safe.”
He carried her downstairs while Rosa followed.
The intruders had fled. Two had been captured. A third had escaped through the east garden.
Matteo was gone.
Only his briefcase remained.
Inside, Alessandro found a letter addressed to him in his father's handwriting.
He opened it.
Alessandro,
If Matteo has returned, then the past has finally caught up with us.
There is one thing you must understand. Your mother was not the only person I failed to protect.
The woman who raised your sister was never supposed to meet me. I made a promise to her that I could not keep.
If you want to find Elena, do not follow the money. Follow the child.
Alessandro read the final line again.
Then he looked at Lily.
A small gold button glimmered in her pocket.
He remembered the photograph of his mother holding an infant wrapped in a blanket decorated with the same buttons.

For the first time, he wondered whether the object Lily had found was not merely a family heirloom.
It might be a key to the one secret his father had never managed to bury.
