Chapter 9 - Vengeance in the Ash

Dominic felt his soul freeze.

There was his nephew. Sophia’s eyes. Sophia’s dark, curly hair. Alive. Terrified. Breathing the same air.

Beside Dominic, Frank slowly lowered his shotgun, his face grim.

“You lose, Dom,” Vincent’s voice echoed through the metal rafters, his voice cracking with hysteria. “You think you’re a god in this town? You’re nothing! The Old Guard is already meeting with the Morettis at the Drake Hotel to divide your territories! This whole city belongs to us now!”

Dominic slowly, deliberately lowered his rifle, letting it clatter against the metal steps. He raised his empty hands, his dark eyes locked on Vincent through the glass.

“Let the boy go, Vincent,” Dominic said, his voice steady, carrying over the hum of the dying generators. “You want me. Take me. Put the bullet in my head. Let the kid walk down those stairs.”

“You think I’m stupid?!” Vincent laughed, a shrill, unhinged sound. “The kid is my ticket out of the country! He gets in the helicopter on the roof with me, or he dies here!”

Mateo began to sob violently, his little shoulders shaking. “Clara! Where’s Clara?! Mommy!”

Vincent shoved the barrel harder against the child’s skull. “Shut up, you little brat!”

Suddenly, out of the smoky shadows at the base of the industrial conveyor belt behind the office, a soft, trembling voice began to sing:

*“Twinkle, twinkle, little star...”*

Vincent’s head jerked sideways. “What the hell is that?”

*“How I wonder what you are...”*

Mateo’s crying stopped instantly. The boy’s eyes went wide. “Clara?” he whispered.

Through the elevated service catwalk—a narrow, rust-eaten walkway that bypassed the main stairs—Clara Higgins appeared.

She wasn't walking. She was crawling on her hands and knees, dragging her bloody, bandaged left leg behind her along the metal grate. Her wedding dress was torn to shreds, blackened with grease and soot. Her face was pale as death.

In her right hand, she dragged the compact submachine gun Dominic had given her.

“Vincent!” Clara screamed.

Vincent spun toward the service door, swinging his revolver away from Mateo’s head.

In that fraction of a second, Dominic moved.

Dominic didn't draw a gun—he lunged forward, grabbed Frank’s shotgun from the stairs, and fired three massive slugs directly into the reinforced glass window of the office.

*BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!*

The heavy glass spider-webbed, shattered, and exploded inward in a shower of crystal shards.

Vincent stumbled back, blinded by flying glass, raising his gun to fire blindly.

Clara pulled herself upright against the doorframe on one leg, leveling her weapon with both hands.

“Get away from my baby!” she roared.

She emptied the entire twenty-round magazine.

The stream of 9mm rounds punched through the office door, shredding the wooden frame and striking Vincent across his chest and stomach.

Vincent was thrown backward against the metal filing cabinets, the revolver flying from his hand, skidding across the floor. He collapsed into a sitting position, his bespoke suit ruined, coughing dark crimson onto his lapels.

Dominic vaulted through the shattered window frame, landing on the glass-strewn floor like an avenging demon.

He didn't look at Vincent. He immediately scooped Mateo into his massive arms, wrapping his wide body around the boy like a steel vault.

“I got you,” Dominic whispered, his voice finally breaking, tears burning his eyes as he pressed the boy’s head against his shoulder. “I got you, Mateo. Uncle Dominic has you. You’re safe.”

The boy buried his face into Dominic’s neck, weeping hysterically, clutching his uncle’s collar with tiny, desperate fists.

Clara collapsed into the doorway, her strength completely gone. She slid down the doorframe onto the floor, her breathing coming in shallow, ragged gasps, her ruined leg finally giving out entirely.

Mateo looked up from Dominic’s shoulder. “Clara!”

Dominic carried the boy over to her, kneeling down on the blood-soaked floor. Mateo reached out, throwing his little arms around Clara’s neck. Clara held him against her chest, kissing the top of his head, weeping silently through the pain.

Across the room, Vincent Corvo took a wet, gurgling breath.

Dominic stood up slowly. He walked over to the dying underboss, his expression devoid of all human mercy.

Vincent looked up, blood bubbling between his teeth, a sickly, mocking grin spreading across his dying face.

“You... you think you won, Dom?” Vincent wheezed, his fingers clawing at his ruined chest.

Dominic drew his Kimber .45, pressing the cold steel between Vincent’s eyes.

“Who ordered it at the Drake, Vincent?” Dominic asked.

Vincent coughed, blood running down his chin. “Check... check the trunk of the car Sophia went down in... check the registration on the black tactical gear...”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed. “What are you talking about?”

Vincent’s grin widened into a ghastly sneer. “Sophia wasn't running from us, Dominic... she was running from *him*... the man who built your empire... your father isn't retired in Florida... he’s alive, Dom. And he’s the one who wanted them dead.”

With a final, rattling choke, Vincent’s eyes rolled back, his head slumping sideways against the metal cabinet.

Silence fell over the foundry.
