Chapter 9 - The Last Name on the Ledger

Evelyn didn't sleep.

She sat at the kitchen table until sunrise, studying the photograph of the ledger.

Her father wanted to call the police.

Her mother wanted her to leave Philadelphia.

Rachel wanted her to disappear into a safe location until they could identify Richard's people.

Evelyn refused all three suggestions.

“I've spent seven years allowing other people to decide what happens to my life,” she said. “I'm done.”

She called Daniel Price.

“I want to activate my grandmother's trust.”

He was silent.

“Are you certain?”

“Yes.”

“Then we need the original ledger.”

“Can the trust be activated without it?”

“Not completely. But your grandmother included a secondary provision. If the original beneficiary appears in person and confirms her identity, the trust can temporarily freeze all transfers.”

“How long?”

“Seventy-two hours.”

Evelyn looked at the photograph.

“That's enough.”

Daniel arranged a meeting at a private legal office in Center City.

Dominic insisted on accompanying her.

She refused.

He arrived anyway.

“You're not going alone.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“I'm not asking you to protect me.”

“I'm not asking permission.”

She almost smiled.

“That's your problem, Dominic. You still think being powerful means you get to make every decision.”

His expression changed.

“I know I don't deserve your trust.”

“No. You don't.”

“But Richard is dangerous.”

“So are you.”

The words landed between them.

Dominic looked away.

Finally, he said, “Then let me earn one chance to help you.”

Evelyn studied him.

There was no easy forgiveness.

No sudden return to the marriage they once had.

But there was a child who loved her father and a dangerous man who seemed, for the first time, to understand that fear couldn't replace honesty.

“Come with me,” she said. “But you follow my lawyer's instructions. Not your own.”

Dominic nodded.

At the legal office, Daniel had already prepared the documents.

Rachel waited outside.

A security team monitored the street.

Everything seemed controlled.

Until the conference room door opened.

Vanessa walked in.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was pulled back, and there was a bruise near her temple.

Dominic immediately stood.

“Where's the ledger?”

Vanessa ignored him.

She looked at Evelyn.

“I need to talk to you.”

“You've had plenty of opportunities.”

“I know.”

“You stole from me.”

“I know.”

“You slept with my husband.”

Vanessa swallowed.

“I know.”

Evelyn felt her anger rise.

“Then what exactly do you want?”

Vanessa placed a small flash drive on the table.

“Everything you need to understand why I did it.”

Dominic reached for it.

Vanessa pulled it away.

“Not you.”

She looked at Evelyn.

“Only her.”

Daniel intervened.

“We'll review the contents first.”

Vanessa shook her head.

“There's no time. Richard knows we're here.”

Dominic's security chief entered.

“Mr. Mercer, we have a problem.”

Before anyone could ask what he meant, the building's fire alarm began to sound.

Rachel appeared at the doorway.

“Everyone out. Now.”

Dominic grabbed Evelyn's hand.

She pulled away.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

For one brief moment, the old anger returned.

Then he stepped aside.

“After you.”

They moved toward the emergency staircase.

A man appeared at the lower landing.

He was holding a phone.

“Mr. Mercer.”

Dominic recognized him.

One of Richard's men.

“Move,” Dominic ordered.

The man smiled.

“Richard sends his regards.”

A struggle broke out.

Daniel pulled Evelyn behind him.

Rachel called for security.

Dominic disarmed the man, but not before another attacker appeared from the upper floor.

The group managed to reach the parking garage.

A black SUV was waiting.

They climbed inside.

Vanessa was the last to enter.

As the vehicle pulled away, she handed Evelyn the flash drive.

“Watch it before you decide what to do with me.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“Why would I believe you?”

“Because I have nothing left to gain by lying.”

Back at a secure location, Daniel opened the files.

The first video showed Richard Hale meeting with Vanessa.

The second showed Dominic discussing the textile company.

The third was dated seven years earlier.

It showed Dominic sitting in a private room with his father.

His father placed a document on the table.

“Marry the girl,” the older man said. “Once she's your wife, you'll have access to the trust.”

Dominic looked uncomfortable.

“I love her.”

His father laughed.

“Then you'll have no trouble convincing her.”

Evelyn felt the blood drain from her face.

The video continued.

Dominic signed the document.

Then he said something that made her turn away from the screen.

“If I marry her, I want the trust protected. I won't let Richard take it.”

His father leaned forward.

“And if she finds out?”

Dominic's answer was barely audible.

“She won't.”

Evelyn stood.

Dominic didn't move.

“You married me because of the trust.”

He looked at her.

“I married you because I loved you.”

“You knew about the trust before you proposed.”

“Yes.”

“You knew your father expected you to use me.”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe our marriage had nothing to do with money.”

“I thought I could protect you.”

Evelyn laughed, but there were tears in her eyes.

“You keep using that word.”

Dominic stepped toward her.

She raised a hand.

“Don't.”

He stopped.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“There's something else.”

She opened the final file.

It contained a scanned copy of the original ledger.

Evelyn leaned closer.

The last page contained a handwritten list of beneficiaries.

Her own name appeared first.

Dominic's appeared second.

And the third name was one nobody in the room expected.

Richard Hale.

Beneath his name was a handwritten note from Eleanor Whitmore.

The person who receives this trust must know the truth about the child who survived the fire.

Evelyn looked at Vanessa.

“What child?”

Vanessa's face went pale.

She pointed at the screen.

“That's why Richard has been looking for the ledger.”

The file opened to a final photograph.

A little boy.

Standing beside Eleanor.

On the back were two words.

May you like

Michael's son.

And the boy looked exactly like Dominic.
