Chapter 5 - The Godfather's Shadow

The revelation hung in the humid air of the office like poison gas.
Salvatore Bellini.
Victor’s mentor. The patriarch who had lifted Victor out of the gutters of South Brooklyn twenty years ago, molded him into an apex predator, and eventually handed him both the keys to the empire and his only daughter’s hand in marriage.
Salvatore had retired five years ago, retreating to a sprawling, heavily fortified estate in Westchester, supposedly spending his twilight years cultivating orchids and nursing an aging heart.
*Why would Salvatore order a hit on me?* Victor’s mind raced. *And worse… did he try to kill his own daughter?*
No. That made no sense. Salvatore worshipped Elena. She was his only child, the light of his existence. If Salvatore was behind Mariposa Holdings, why was Elena poisoned?
“Dante,” Victor called out coldly without looking away from Selena.
The heavy door opened instantly. Dante stood in the doorway, his face grim.
“Take her down to the holding cells in the basement,” Victor ordered. “Strip her of every device. If she breathes without permission, break her fingers.”
“Victor, please!” Selena shrieked as Dante grabbed her by the arm, dragging her across the Persian rug. “I didn't know! I didn't want anyone to die!”
The heavy door slammed shut, cutting off her screams.
Victor stood alone in the quiet office. He reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a secure satellite phone, and dialed a number he hadn't called in three years: Arthur Vance, the Bellini family’s senior legal counsel and Salvatore’s closest confidant.
The phone rang four times before a raspy, aristocratic voice answered.
“It is two in the morning, Victor. This had better be catastrophic.”
“Elena is in the ICCU at Mercy Harbor,” Victor said, skipping all pleasantries. “Someone put foxglove in her tea tonight.”
A sharp intake of breath hissed over the encrypted line. “What did you say?”
“You heard me, Arthur. And at eight o'clock, Frankie Vane tried to blow up the Red Hook warehouse with twenty pounds of C4. Selena Vale had two million dollars transferred into her account this afternoon from Mariposa Holdings to keep me distracted.”
Silence stretched over the line. Ten seconds. Fifteen seconds.
“Arthur,” Victor growled, the threat clear. “Talk to me before I drive up to Westchester and put a bullet through Salvatore’s head.”
“You idiot,” Arthur said, his voice trembling not with fear, but with sudden, devastating sorrow. “Salvatore didn't order that hit, Victor. Salvatore died thirty-six hours ago.”
Victor gripped the phone so hard the casing groaned. “What?”
“He had a stroke on Tuesday morning,” Arthur whispered. “We kept it quiet. No press. No announcements to the Five Families. Salvatore knew that the moment word leaked of his death, the vultures within your own ranks would smell blood. He left strict instructions that only Elena was to be informed once his will was finalized.”
Victor’s chest tightened. “When did Elena find out?”
“Yesterday afternoon,” Arthur replied. “I met her personally at three o’clock. She spent three hours weeping in my office. Then she signed the preliminary paperwork to inherit her father’s estate, including Mariposa Holdings.”
The pieces began to violently snap together in Victor’s mind.
Elena hadn't skipped dinner just waiting for him. She had been sitting alone in that massive penthouse, mourning her father, waiting for her husband to come home so she wouldn't have to carry the crushing weight of grief alone.
And while she waited, holding that news in her heart, Victor was texting her *Late meeting. Don’t wait up.*
Victor leaned against his desk, nausea threatening to overwhelm him. “If Salvatore is dead, who authorized the transfer from Mariposa Holdings to Selena’s account?”
“There were only three people with signing authority on that account, Victor,” Arthur said, his voice dropping to a grave whisper. “Salvatore, Elena… and the secondary executor named in Salvatore’s will.”
“Who, Arthur? Who is the secondary executor?”
May you like
“Your foster brother,” Arthur said. “Marco.”
