Chapter 6 - The Man Behind the House

Marco Bellini had spent twenty years believing his father died in prison.

Instead, Adrian had built an invisible empire from the shadows.

He had worked for Carlo.

Then Vittorio.

Then himself.

Daniel discovered that Vittorio’s stolen money was only the visible layer.

Adrian had created the network beneath it.

He bribed officers.

Controlled bookmakers.

Bought debt.

Owned judges.

He specialized in making ordinary people desperate enough to become useful.

Connor had been perfect.

A gambling addict with a sister working inside Leo Rossi’s house.

The kidnapping had one purpose.

Push Tessa toward Leo.

Why?

Because Adrian knew Leo would investigate.

And Leo would eventually find Daniel’s ledger.

“He wanted us to find it?” Tessa asked.

Carlo nodded.

“Not the ledger. Something inside it.”

Marco flipped through the pages.

Nothing.

Then Tessa noticed the binding.

Her father had taught her to repair books when she was little.

The spine was too thick.

She carefully cut the inner cloth.

A tiny memory card fell onto the table.

Leo stared.

Eighteen years ago, memory cards that size were expensive but available.

Marco inserted it into an isolated computer.

Files appeared.

Photographs.

Bank records.

Audio recordings.

Names.

Hundreds of them.

Then one video.

Daniel Mercer appeared on screen.

Tessa covered her mouth.

Her father was younger than she remembered.

Alive.

Moving.

Breathing.

“Tessa,” Daniel said into the camera, “if you ever see this, I’m sorry.”

Her eyes filled.

Leo stood beside her without touching her.

Daniel explained everything.

Adrian Bellini had created the network.

Vittorio had stolen money but eventually tried to leave.

Carlo discovered part of the scheme.

Daniel discovered all of it.

And there was one final secret.

Adrian had a partner.

Someone younger.

Someone Daniel never identified.

The video ended.

Marco stared at the screen.

“My father had a partner.”

Leo nodded.

“Someone who’s still operating.”

The answer arrived twenty minutes later.

Connor disappeared from the hospital.

Tessa screamed when she saw the empty bed.

The security guard outside had been drugged.

A nurse’s uniform was found in a stairwell.

On Connor’s pillow lay a phone.

It rang.

Leo answered.

A distorted voice spoke.

“Bring the card.”

Tessa grabbed the phone.

“Let me talk to Connor.”

A pause.

Then her brother came on.

“Tess?”

She nearly collapsed.

“Connor.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Where are you?”

“I don’t know.”

A man took the phone back.

“Midnight. Pier nineteen. Leo comes alone.”

Tessa shouted, “No.”

The voice laughed.

“Then Connor dies.”

The call ended.

Leo looked at her.

“I’ll go.”

“No.”

“Tessa.”

“You know it’s a trap.”

“Yes.”

“And you’re going?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

The answer came too quickly.

“Because he’s your brother.”

She stared at him.

Something had changed between them.

It had happened quietly.

Somewhere between the office hallway and the warehouse.

Between the bullet and the balcony.

Between the truth about their fathers.

“You barely know me.”

Leo stepped closer.

“I know you send most of your paycheck to a brother who keeps disappointing you.”

“That makes me stupid.”

“No. It makes you loyal.”

“I clean your floors.”

“You keep saying that like it determines your value.”

Her throat tightened.

Leo lowered his voice.

“When I opened that office door, I thought I was going to find someone injured.”

“You did.”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

The meaning hung between them.

Tessa’s breath caught.

Leo lifted a hand as if he might touch her face.

He stopped before doing it.

“I’m bringing Connor home.”

Then he walked away.

At 11:52 p.m., Leo reached Pier Nineteen.

Alone.

Or so Adrian’s men believed.

Tessa was inside Marco’s surveillance van three blocks away.

Carlo monitored another channel.

Leo carried the memory card.

A man stepped from the warehouse.

Not Adrian.

Young.

Expensive suit.

Familiar face.

Tessa leaned toward the monitor.

She had seen him before.

At the Rossi estate.

Dinner parties.

Christmas.

Family photographs.

Leo stared at the man approaching him.

“Julian.”

Julian Rossi smiled.

Leo’s cousin.

Vittorio’s only son.

The quiet cousin who supposedly managed vineyards in California.

“Hello, Leo.”

Tessa felt ice spread through her chest.

Daniel’s unidentified younger partner had never disappeared.

May you like

He had inherited Adrian’s network.

And for years, he had been eating dinner at Leo Rossi’s table.
