Chương 1 - The Elevator

The Mafia Boss Found His Secretary Crying in an Elevator and Realized the One Thing His Power Could Never Buy
Luca Duca had watched men beg for their lives without blinking.
But the sight of Clare Bennett quietly taking off her engagement ring in an elevator made him press the emergency stop.
The private elevator jolted gently between the twenty-third and twenty-second floors of Duca Tower, leaving them suspended above Midtown Manhattan.
Clare looked up.
Her eyes were red.
Her right hand was wrapped tightly around a diamond ring.
And beneath the cuff of her cream blouse, four angry red marks circled her wrist.
“Start the elevator,” she said.
Luca stared at the marks.
“Who grabbed you?”
Her jaw hardened.
“Start the elevator.”
Most people did not speak to Luca Duca twice.
Not because he raised his voice.
He almost never did.
At forty-one, Luca controlled a legitimate real estate and logistics empire worth hundreds of millions of dollars. He also carried a last name that had frightened certain neighborhoods of New York long before anyone put Duca Holdings on the side of a glass tower.
There were men who called him businessman.
There were men who called him boss.
There were men who were careful never to call him anything at all.
Clare Bennett called him Luca only when she was angry enough to forget he signed her paycheck.
Tonight, she looked exhausted enough to risk it.
“Luca.”
He pressed the button.
The elevator resumed its descent.
Twenty-one.
Twenty.
Nineteen.
Neither spoke.
Clare turned toward the mirrored wall and wiped beneath one eye with the heel of her hand.
“Please pretend you didn’t see me.”
“All right.”
Her reflection looked at him.
She had expected questions.
Luca gave her none.
He had known Clare for four years.
She was thirty-two, terrifyingly organized, impossible to flatter, and one of perhaps six people in Manhattan who could tell him his schedule was ridiculous without losing her job.
Three months earlier, she had interrupted a meeting with seven executives to inform him that he had somehow scheduled two separate dinners in two different boroughs at the same time.
When Luca had asked which one she planned to cancel, Clare had said, “Neither. I’m considering letting physics teach you humility.”
The room had gone silent.
Luca had laughed.
He had trusted her ever since.
But he had never seen her cry.
Her phone vibrated inside her purse.
Once.
Twice.
Again.
She ignored it.
When she shifted the purse onto her shoulder, her sleeve moved again.
The marks on her wrist were unmistakable.
Someone’s fingers.
Luca’s hands curled slowly at his sides.
Clare saw it.
“Don’t.”
“I haven’t done anything.”
“You’re thinking loudly.”
His gaze returned to the numbers above the doors.
“Who is calling?”
She hesitated.
The phone vibrated again.
The screen flashed through the half-open purse.
EVAN.
Luca knew the name.
Evan Mercer.
Thirty-five.
Investment director.
Good family.
Expensive education.
Clean reputation.
Clare’s fiancé of fourteen months.
“Did Evan do that?”
Clare closed her eyes.
“I said I don’t want questions.”
“Then I won’t ask another.”
She studied him as if trying to decide whether that was a trick.
The elevator reached the lobby.
The polished steel doors opened.
Clare stepped out first.
The lobby of Duca Tower was nearly empty at 8:47 p.m. Rain streaked the forty-foot windows, turning Manhattan headlights into smeared ribbons of white and red.
Luca walked beside her.
“My driver will take you home.”
“No.”
“It wasn’t an order.”
“It sounded exactly like one.”
“Occupational hazard.”
For half a second, the corner of her mouth moved.
Then her phone buzzed.
The almost-smile vanished.
“I’ll get a cab.”
Luca looked toward the rain.
“Then I’ll get you one.”
May you like
“Why?”
